How to Fix a Favicon Not Showing on Your WordPress Site

A practical, version-aware guide to fixing a WordPress favicon that is missing, outdated or visible only in the dashboard.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your WordPress favicon is missing, showing an old image, or visible in the dashboard but not in the live browser tab, fix it in this order: set the Site Icon in the correct WordPress screen, verify the icon URLs in the live page source, remove duplicate theme or plugin declarations, purge every cache layer, and then isolate plugin or theme conflicts. Use a square image of at least 512×512 pixels; PNG is the safest choice for WordPress.

This process separates a bad or undiscoverable icon file from a correct icon that is being hidden by stale cache, competing markup, or a browser/search preview that has not refreshed.

Use the correct WordPress Site Icon setting

WordPress includes a built-in Site Icon feature. It generates the favicon-related markup for the front end, so you normally should not begin by editing header.php or manually uploading a favicon.ico file.

WordPress 6.5 and later

  1. Sign in to the WordPress administrator area.
  2. Open Settings > General.
  3. Find Site Icon, choose an image, and upload or select the file from the Media Library.
  4. Use a square image that is at least 512×512 pixels. WordPress recommends PNG.
  5. Save the settings, then open the public site in a new private window for the first check.

WordPress Version 6.5 moved the Site Icon control to General Settings. If you look under the Customizer on a current installation, you may conclude that the feature is missing when it has simply moved.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

WordPress 4.3 through 6.4

  1. Open Appearance > Customize.
  2. Choose Site Identity.
  3. Select Site Icon, upload or choose the square image, and publish the change.
  4. Visit the live site in a private window after publishing.

The wording and location differ between these version ranges, but the result is the same: WordPress stores one authoritative Site Icon and prints the related tags on the public page.

Image requirements that prevent avoidable failures

  • Make the source image square; a rectangular logo may be cropped or rejected.
  • Use at least 512×512 pixels so WordPress can produce the larger icon sizes it declares.
  • Prefer a PNG with a transparent or solid background that remains legible at tiny sizes.
  • Check the artwork at 16–32 pixels. Fine text and thin lines can disappear even when the file uploads successfully.
  • After replacing an image, note that the new file may have a different Media Library URL. Later checks must use the URL printed by the live page, not an older bookmark.

Why WordPress can show the icon in admin but not on the live site

The administrator preview confirms that WordPress accepted an image; it does not prove that visitors are receiving the expected HTML or image response. A cached page can still contain the previous tags, a theme or plugin can print a second declaration, or the URL in the generated markup can point to a missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work from the outside in. First inspect what an anonymous visitor receives, then test the referenced image directly, and only after that change settings or deactivate components. This avoids treating a delivery problem as a design problem.

Verify the favicon tags and every referenced URL

Inspect the live page source

  1. Open the public home page while logged out, or use a private browsing window.
  2. Use the browser’s View Page Source command rather than relying only on the Elements panel, which can be altered after the page loads.
  3. Search for rel="icon", apple-touch-icon, and msapplication-TileImage.
  4. Record each URL in those declarations and note whether more than one different icon path is present.

WordPress core’s wp_site_icon() normally emits links for a 32px icon and a 192px icon, an Apple touch icon, and Microsoft tile metadata. It also applies the site_icon_meta_tags filter. Seeing these declarations is useful evidence that core is running; seeing none suggests that a theme, plugin, cached document, or altered template is preventing the expected output.

Open each icon URL directly

Paste every referenced URL into a new browser tab. A valid response should display an image or download as an image rather than returning an error page. Check for these specific results:

  • 404 or 410: the file was deleted, the uploads path is wrong, or a rewrite rule is intercepting the request.
  • Redirect to an HTML page: the declaration does not lead to an image, even if the browser appears to follow the redirect successfully.
  • Mixed-content block: an HTTPS page is attempting to load an HTTP icon. Correct the URL or site configuration so the resource is delivered over HTTPS.
  • Wrong image: the tag may be supplied by an old theme or plugin rather than the current Site Icon.
  • Correct image response but no tab icon: continue with cache and browser checks; the file itself is being delivered.

Also confirm that the response is the intended image, not a login screen, maintenance page, or host-generated error document with an image-like URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove duplicate or competing favicon declarations

A WordPress page can contain core Site Icon tags and additional links inserted by a theme, a header-injection plugin, a logo plugin, or custom code. Browsers may choose one declaration inconsistently, and a stale or broken declaration can win over the correct one.

What to look for in source

  • Multiple rel="icon" links with different filenames or directories.
  • A theme logo path that does not match the image selected under Site Icon.
  • Hard-coded references to favicon.ico in a theme template.
  • Plugin-generated tags added before or after the WordPress-generated tags.
  • URLs pointing to an old domain, an HTTP scheme, a staging site, or a directory that no longer exists.

WordPress theme-review guidance recommends that themes not include their own favicon or Site Icon because core handles this function. Keep one authoritative configuration: the WordPress Site Icon plus the declarations core generates. Remove the extra theme markup, disable the plugin’s favicon feature, or remove the custom hook that adds it. Do not delete core output to preserve a competing implementation.

Retest after cleanup

  1. Save the theme or plugin change.
  2. View the source again and confirm that only the intended icon declarations remain.
  3. Open the remaining URLs directly and verify that each returns the current image.
  4. Purge caches before judging the browser result.

Purge every cache that can preserve the old icon

Favicons are unusually persistent because browsers cache them separately from ordinary page content. A correct change can therefore look broken for longer than a normal text edit. Clear each layer that may have stored either the HTML tags or the image file.

Browser cache

  • Open the site in a private window.
  • Test in a separate browser or on a different device.
  • If the private-window test works, clear the affected browser’s cached images and files, then close and reopen it.

A fresh device is a useful control test: it distinguishes a local browser cache from a site-wide delivery problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WordPress and host caches

Use the purge or clear command in any WordPress cache plugin. Then clear the hosting provider’s server-side page or object cache if it has one. A page cache can keep serving old HTML even after the Site Icon setting has changed.

Reverse proxy and CDN caches

If the site uses a reverse proxy or content-delivery network, purge the affected URL or the relevant cache zone. Purging only the WordPress plugin is not enough when an upstream layer still stores the old page or icon response.

Retest in a controlled order

  1. Purge the WordPress cache.
  2. Purge the host or server cache.
  3. Purge the reverse proxy or CDN cache.
  4. Open a private window and inspect the source again.
  5. Open the icon URL directly to ensure the new image, rather than the old one, is returned.

Do not repeatedly change the image while caches are uncleared. Each replacement creates another possible URL and makes it harder to identify which response is current.

Isolate plugin and theme conflicts

If the source contains incorrect or missing declarations after cache purges, perform a controlled conflict test. The goal is to change one variable at a time and record the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plugin-by-plugin test

  1. Back up the site or ensure you have a reliable recovery method.
  2. Temporarily deactivate all non-essential plugins. Keep only what is required to maintain access and site safety.
  3. Check the public page source and the icon URL.
  4. If the favicon returns, reactivate the plugins one at a time.
  5. After each activation, purge the relevant cache and check the source again.
  6. The last plugin activated before the problem returns is the leading suspect.

Inspect that plugin’s settings for favicon, logo, header, branding, optimization, HTML injection, or image-rewriting features. Update it if an update is available, disable only its competing favicon feature when possible, and contact its developer with the exact duplicate tag or failing URL if the conflict remains.

Default-theme test

  1. Temporarily switch to a current default WordPress theme.
  2. Use the same Site Icon and check the public source and direct image URL.
  3. If the icon works with the default theme, the original theme is adding hard-coded markup or a filter.
  4. Search the original theme for favicon links, logo hooks, and code using site_icon_meta_tags.
  5. Remove the duplicate declaration through a child theme or the theme’s supported settings rather than editing files that an update will overwrite.

If the favicon still fails with all non-essential plugins disabled and a default theme active, focus on the generated URL, uploads permissions, rewrite rules, HTTPS configuration, and server or CDN responses rather than on theme styling.

Built-in Site Icon versus manual or theme markup

The built-in feature is the preferred starting point because it centralizes the setting and lets WordPress generate the expected set of declarations. Manual markup can be necessary for a specialized implementation, but it adds another place for URLs, cache behavior, and conflicts to go wrong.

Comparison point WordPress built-in Site Icon Manual or theme markup
Version compatibility WordPress 4.3–6.4 uses Appearance > Customize > Site Identity; WordPress 6.5 and later uses Settings > General. Depends on the theme, template, hook, or custom code that adds it; the correct path can change when the theme changes.
Competing declarations One central setting with core-generated icon links. Higher risk of duplicate links when a theme, plugin, and core each print an icon.
Cache invalidation control Still requires browser, WordPress, server, proxy, or CDN purges after a change. Requires purging the same layers plus checking every separately referenced file.
Direct icon URL Core supplies the URLs; you can test each generated response directly. You must maintain each path and ensure it does not return a 404, redirect to HTML, or mixed-content block.
Conflict isolation Clear baseline for disabling plugins or switching to a default theme. More variables to inspect because the source may be distributed across templates, hooks, and settings.

Diagnose the problem by symptom

What you see Most likely area Next action
The icon is absent in every browser, and source has no icon tags. Site Icon is not saved, the wrong version-specific screen was used, or a theme/plugin altered head output. Set the icon using the correct path for your WordPress version, then inspect source with non-essential plugins disabled.
Source has tags, but one or more URLs return 404. Missing media file, incorrect uploads path, or rewrite/server problem. Open the URL directly, confirm the file exists, and correct the declaration or media reference.
The browser shows an old icon after a successful change. Browser, page, image, or CDN cache. Test privately or on a fresh device, purge all cache layers, and inspect the returned image again.
Different browsers show different icons. Competing declarations or browser-specific cached responses. Remove duplicate links, purge caches, and compare the live source in each browser.
The tab icon works, but a search result still shows the old image. Search preview has not refreshed. Verify the live HTML and direct image URL first; search engines recrawl on their own schedule, and no guaranteed recrawl time is established here.
The icon works only with a default theme or with plugins disabled. Theme or plugin conflict. Reactivate components one at a time and remove the component that reintroduces the bad declaration.

Browser tab, bookmark, mobile shortcut, and search preview are different tests

A favicon displayed in a desktop tab proves that one browser received and selected an icon. It does not guarantee that a bookmark, mobile home-screen shortcut, Microsoft tile, or search-result preview has updated. WordPress core emits separate metadata for several of these uses, which is why the source check should include apple-touch-icon and msapplication-TileImage as well as rel="icon".

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For search results, do not start by waiting for a new preview. Confirm that the public page contains the current declarations and that the referenced image URLs return the intended files. Once those checks pass, the remaining delay is controlled by the search engine’s crawl and preview systems rather than by the WordPress setting.

Prevent the favicon from breaking again

  • Keep one authoritative Site Icon configuration in WordPress.
  • Use a square PNG of at least 512×512 pixels and retain the original file in a safe location.
  • After a theme or branding plugin update, inspect the page source for newly added icon links.
  • When replacing the image, purge browser, WordPress, server, reverse-proxy, and CDN caches in the order used by your hosting stack.
  • Test the live site while logged out; administrator sessions can be served different cached content.
  • Keep HTTPS consistent for the page and every icon URL.
  • Document the expected icon URL and the date of the last change so a future 404 or stale response is easier to identify.

Final verification checklist

  1. The Site Icon is saved in the correct screen for the installed WordPress version.
  2. The source image is square, at least 512×512 pixels, and preferably PNG.
  3. The live page source contains the expected core declarations.
  4. Every referenced icon URL opens as the intended image and does not return a 404, HTML page, redirect problem, or mixed-content block.
  5. Duplicate theme and plugin declarations have been removed.
  6. Browser, WordPress, server, reverse-proxy, and CDN caches have been purged as applicable.
  7. The result has been checked in a private window and, if possible, on a separate browser or device.
  8. Plugins and the original theme have been reintroduced one at a time if a conflict test was required.

When these checks pass, the WordPress site is delivering a valid favicon. Any remaining old image in a search result is a separate preview-refresh issue, not evidence that the Site Icon setting failed.
