The safest order is to preserve the old site, verify the complete file and database copies, correct the destination database and URL settings, repair rewrites, isolate extensions, clear caches, and test the new server before changing DNS. Keep the old server online until every important function works from the destination.

Start with a rollback point
Do not troubleshoot by overwriting the only working copy. Leave the old server untouched and create fresh backups before making further changes.
- Download the entire WordPress directory, including
wp-admin,wp-includes, the root files, andwp-content. - Export the database from the old server and keep the original SQL dump unchanged.
- Make a separate copy of uploads, themes, plugins, mu-plugins, and any server-level configuration that affects the site.
- Record the old database name, table prefix, PHP version, web-server type, cron method, HTTPS configuration, and any special rewrite rules.
- Keep the old host available until the destination has passed the pre-DNS checklist and DNS resolves to the intended IP address.
If a migration utility produced a partial restore, do not keep adding individual files to it. Start again from one verified backup so that the database, uploads, themes, and plugins belong to the same point in time.

Verify that the destination contains a complete, matching copy
Many apparent WordPress errors are caused by an incomplete transfer or by importing the SQL file into a different database than the one configured for the site.
Check the files
- Compare the destination
wp-content/uploadstree with the old copy. Missing year/month directories explain broken images and media-library entries. - Confirm that the active theme, all required plugins, and any must-use plugins exist on the destination.
- Check file ownership and permissions so the web-server user can read WordPress files and write only where your host requires it, such as uploads.
- Make sure hidden files, especially
.htaccess, were included when the transfer was made.
Check the database import
- Open the destination database and verify that WordPress tables actually exist.
- Confirm that the imported tables use the prefix shown in
wp-config.php. The prefix may not bewp_. - Check that the SQL dump was imported into the intended database rather than a similarly named empty database.
- Compare table counts and approximate sizes with the old database. A dramatically smaller import is a warning sign, not proof of a successful migration.
Fix “Error Establishing a Database Connection”
This message means WordPress cannot establish a usable connection to its database. It does not identify one single cause, so check each connection component at the destination.
- Open the destination
wp-config.php. - Verify
DB_NAMEmatches the database that contains the imported WordPress tables. - Verify
DB_USERandDB_PASSWORD, including capitalization and special characters. - Verify
DB_HOST. Many hosts uselocalhost, but some require a separate hostname or socket value. - In the hosting control panel, confirm that the database user exists, has permission on that database, and is allowed to connect from the web server.
- Check that the database server is running and that the account has not been suspended, reached a connection limit, or exceeded storage.
- Confirm the table prefix in
$table_prefixmatches the imported tables.
Save the file without adding spaces or typographic quotation marks to credential values. If a direct database test supplied by your host succeeds but WordPress still fails, recheck the database name and prefix first; those are commonly copied incorrectly during a move.
Correct the WordPress URLs without locking yourself out
A server move can change the hostname, scheme, or installation path. WordPress stores its main addresses as the home and siteurl values in the wp_options table. The destination values must use the hostname and scheme that users will actually visit.
Temporary overrides for recovery
If the wrong URL prevents access to the dashboard, add temporary constants above the line that says to stop editing the file:

define('WP_HOME', 'https://example.com');
define('WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com');
Replace the example with the real destination URL and include a path if WordPress is installed in a subdirectory. These constants override the database values for requests, but they do not rewrite old links inside posts, widgets, serialized options, or plugin settings. Remove the temporary constants after correcting the database so there is one authoritative configuration.
Database correction when the dashboard is unavailable
As an alternative, edit the rows whose option names are home and siteurl in the destination wp_options table. Use the exact final scheme and hostname, save, and then remove any temporary constants from wp-config.php. Take a database backup before editing rows directly.
Replace an old domain or path safely
Changing only home and siteurl leaves older absolute URLs in content, menu items, widgets, theme settings, and plugin data. A plain SQL search-and-replace across every column is unsafe because WordPress and its plugins store serialized PHP values that include string lengths. Changing the text without updating those lengths can corrupt the stored value.
Use a serialization-aware method
- Make a new database backup and keep it separate from the original dump.
- Run a migration utility or command that understands serialized data, replacing the old scheme, hostname, and path with the final values.
- Limit the replacement to the tables and columns that need it, and avoid changing unrelated text that merely resembles the old hostname.
- Review the tool’s dry-run or replacement count before committing changes.
- After the replacement, inspect representative posts, menus, widgets, theme customizer settings, forms, and plugin configuration.
Do not run a second broad replacement with a different spelling until you know what the first operation changed. Mixed trailing slashes, http versus https, and old subdirectory paths are frequent reasons some links remain wrong.
Repair a working home page with 404 errors on inner pages
When the front page loads but posts, pages, or category links return 404, the content is usually present and the rewrite configuration is not.

- Sign in to WordPress and open Settings > Permalinks.
- Do not change the selected structure unless you intend to change public URLs. Simply select the current structure and click Save Changes to regenerate rewrite rules.
- Inspect the document root for
.htaccess. It must be readable by the web server and contain the rules appropriate for the installation. - Confirm that the server supports WordPress rewrites and permits directory overrides. Apache normally requires the rewrite module and an override setting that allows the rules; an Nginx setup needs its equivalent location configuration rather than an
.htaccessfile. - Check whether the site is installed in a subdirectory and whether the rewrite base points to that path.
If saving permalinks reports a write failure, create or update the file with the exact rules supplied by WordPress for that installation, then protect it from unintended edits according to your host’s guidance.
Diagnose a white screen or HTTP 500 response
A blank page and a 500 response generally indicate a PHP fatal error, an incompatible extension, exhausted memory, or a server configuration problem.
Enable controlled logging
Temporarily enable logging in wp-config.php without displaying errors to visitors:
define('WP_DEBUG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);
Reproduce the failure once, then inspect wp-content/debug.log and the PHP or web-server error log. Remove or disable public debug display after diagnosis; stack traces and file paths should not be exposed on a live site.

- Deactivate all plugins. If the dashboard is unavailable, rename the
wp-content/pluginsdirectory temporarily so WordPress cannot load normal plugins. - Switch to a bundled default theme by renaming the active theme directory, provided a compatible default theme is installed.
- Reactivate plugins one at a time and test after each activation. The first component that reproduces the fatal error is the one to update, replace, or remove.
- Compare the destination PHP version and required extensions with those used by the old server. A migration can expose code that was already incompatible but never executed on the previous host.
Restore the original directory names after each test and keep a record of the component that caused the failure. Do not leave every plugin disabled as a permanent fix.

Restore missing CSS, images, uploads, and partial content
Broken styling or media usually means that URLs still point to the old host, files were not copied, or a cache is serving stale references.
- Open the browser’s developer tools and check the exact URL requested for a missing asset. An old hostname identifies a URL-replacement problem; a destination URL returning 404 identifies a missing file or incorrect path.
- Compare the destination upload directories and file names with the old server, including capitalization. Case-sensitive Linux filesystems treat
Photo.jpgandphoto.jpgas different files. - Confirm that the active theme and plugin directories are complete and readable.
- Run the serialization-aware replacement described earlier if links still contain the old scheme or host.
- Purge browser, plugin, server, reverse-proxy, and CDN caches only after the underlying files and URLs are correct. Otherwise the cache can preserve the broken response.
If only selected posts, products, forms, or widgets are absent, compare the relevant database tables and plugin data with the old copy. Check that the destination is connected to the expected database and table prefix before importing anything again.

Stop redirect loops and HTTPS warnings
Redirect loops occur when WordPress, the web server, a reverse proxy, or a CDN disagree about the requested scheme or hostname.
- Set
home,siteurl,WP_HOME, andWP_SITEURL—where used—to the same final scheme and host. - Check whether the proxy passes the original HTTPS status to the origin. If the proxy terminates TLS but the origin thinks every request is HTTP, forced-HTTPS rules can redirect indefinitely.
- Review server and CDN redirect rules for duplicate HTTP-to-HTTPS or www-to-non-www logic. Keep one deliberate canonical rule at the edge and compatible settings at the origin.
- Verify that the certificate covers the hostname and that mixed-content references were replaced after the URL change.
- Test in a private browser window after clearing relevant caches, because a cached 301 can make a corrected configuration appear broken.
Regain dashboard access after the URL change
If the front end works but /wp-admin redirects to the old host or refuses login, use a temporary WP_HOME/WP_SITEURL override with the final destination, or correct the two URL rows in wp_options. Once the dashboard is reachable, remove temporary constants and complete the serialization-aware replacement. Check that cookie paths, HTTPS status, and any security plugin’s allowed-host setting match the new address before testing logout and login again.
Clear caches only after configuration is consistent
Migration problems can survive a correct fix because several independent caches retain old HTML, CSS, redirects, or object data.
Best Value
- Clear the WordPress caching plugin’s page and object cache.
- Purge server-level FastCGI, Varnish, or equivalent cache if your host uses one.
- Purge the CDN or reverse proxy and wait for its invalidation to complete.
- Test with a private browser session and, where possible, a second network so you are not seeing a local DNS or browser cache.
Do not use cache purges to hide an incomplete migration. A fresh request should succeed from the origin server before the cache is repopulated.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Test the new server before changing DNS
Use a temporary host-file mapping, a server IP, or a staging URL that points the domain to the destination without changing public DNS. A migration utility may also provide a destination URL and a server_ip option for this purpose. Test with the same HTTPS and host-header behavior that production will use.
Pre-cutover checklist
- Open the home page, several ordinary pages, posts, category archives, search, and pagination.
- Sign in, edit a draft, upload media, preview it, and verify that scheduled publishing uses the correct server time.
- Submit every important form and confirm mail delivery, spam handling, and notification addresses.
- Check menus, widgets, custom post types, redirects, feeds, XML sitemaps, robots directives, and canonical URLs.
- Verify SSL, mixed-content behavior, login cookies, and both preferred and redirected hostnames.
- Check background jobs, cron events, backups, image processing, and integrations that call the site from outside.
- Review analytics and search-indexing settings so the temporary test address is not accidentally published as canonical.
- Compare a sample of old and new URLs and confirm that media downloads return the expected status.
Only change DNS after the destination passes this list and the old server remains available as a rollback option. After propagation, verify that the domain resolves to the intended destination IP from more than one network.
Choose a recovery method: manual transfer or a migration service
A plugin or managed service can automate copying, URL replacement, and some validation, but it does not remove the need for an independent backup and a pre-DNS test. The practical differences are below.
| Decision factor | Manual migration | Migration plugin or managed service |
|---|---|---|
| Files and database completeness | You verify each directory, SQL import, prefix, and permission yourself. | The tool may automate transfer, but you still verify file lists, tables, uploads, and the active configuration. |
| Serialized URLs | Requires a serialization-aware command or carefully selected procedure. | Often included, but replacement counts and affected tables still need review. |
| Rollback clarity | Clear when you retain the old server and an untouched SQL dump. | Depends on whether the service preserves a restorable backup; create your own independent copy. |
| Testing before DNS | Uses host-file mapping, an IP, or staging. | May offer a temporary destination URL or server-IP test, but verify production host and HTTPS behavior yourself. |
| Logging and error visibility | Direct access to PHP, web-server, database, and WordPress logs. | Convenient reports can help, while host-level logs may still be required for failures. |
| Large databases and uploads | Lets you tune import limits and transfer in verified chunks, but requires technical oversight. | May handle chunking or remote transfer; check documented limits before starting. |
| Cache and CDN cleanup | You coordinate every purge and origin check. | Some tools trigger purges, but confirm the origin is correct before repopulating caches. |
| Support responsibility | Your hosting and WordPress administrators own diagnosis. | Support may assist with the tool’s process; server, DNS, theme, and third-party failures may remain your responsibility. |
Quick symptom-to-check guide
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| Database connection error | Database existence, credentials, host, user permissions, imported dump, and table prefix. |
| White screen or HTTP 500 | Controlled WordPress logging, PHP/server logs, then plugin and theme isolation. |
| Home page works but inner pages are 404 | Save permalinks, inspect .htaccess or server rewrites, and confirm override support. |
| CSS or images are missing | Check the requested URL, uploads and theme files, serialized URL replacement, and caches. |
| Redirect loop or HTTPS warning | Align URL scheme, proxy SSL handling, certificate coverage, and forced-HTTPS rules. |
| Only some content is missing | Compare database tables, uploads, plugin/theme directories, database selection, and prefix. |
| Dashboard is inaccessible after the move | Use a temporary URL override or correct home/siteurl, then remove temporary settings. |
When to redo the migration
Redo the transfer end to end when the restore is partial, the SQL import is incomplete, files came from different backup dates, or no one can establish which database and prefix the destination is using. Mixing fragments from several attempts makes later failures difficult to attribute and can permanently lose newer uploads or settings. Preserve the old server, take one verified backup set, import it into a clean destination, validate configuration, and repeat the pre-DNS test before switching traffic.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Recover the site in this order: preserve the old copy, verify files and database, correct connection and URL settings, perform a serialization-safe replacement, repair rewrites, isolate extensions, clear caches, and test every critical function before DNS cutover. Keeping a verified rollback copy is the protection that turns a failed migration into a controlled restart.
