If your “deeplink issue” means a link opens in a browser instead of your app, opens the wrong screen, or loses its destination after installation, start by identifying which of those failures you have. Android App Links and iOS Universal Links use verified HTTPS domain associations; custom URL schemes work differently. Check the platform association first, then the app’s URL routing, and test by tapping a real link on the affected device.
First, identify what is failing
A link can fail at two separate stages: the operating system may not recognize the website as associated with the app, or the app may receive the URL but route it incorrectly. A third case—continuing to a particular page after installing the app—is deferred deep linking, a separate requirement.

- Browser or chooser appears: Check the website association, URL matching rules, and link-opening context.
- The app opens the wrong page or its home screen: Check how the app reads and parses the incoming URL.
- It works in a development environment but not when tapped: Test a clickable link on a real device and check the build’s domain association.
- The destination is lost during installation: Treat this as deferred deep linking, not simply an installed-app link failure.
Before changing settings, record the full URL (redact private tokens), platform and OS version, app build and signing identity, whether the app is installed, where you tapped the link, and what happened. Also establish whether the URL is a custom scheme or an HTTPS link intended as an Android App Link or iOS Universal Link. Fix an Android App Link
1. Check the domain association file
Open https://your-domain/.well-known/assetlinks.json directly, replacing your-domain with the exact host used by the link. It must be valid JSON and served over HTTPS without a redirect. A redirect—for example, from HTTP to HTTPS or from an apex domain to www—can prevent verification. The file must be hosted for the domain the app claims; a working file on a different hostname does not establish the association.

2. Match the fingerprint to the installed build
Compare the SHA-256 certificate fingerprint in assetlinks.json with the signing certificate for the app build on the device. If the app is distributed with Google Play App Signing, use the signing certificate Google uses for released builds; a local debug or upload key may not match. Check the fingerprint formatting as well as its value.
3. Check the manifest filter against the URL
In the app manifest, confirm the intent filter matches the link’s scheme, host, and path and includes android:autoVerify="true" for the verified App Link. Review every claimed host and path so the app does not claim URLs it is not meant to handle. Android’s deep-link documentation explains how intent filters route matching links.

4. Re-run verification and inspect routing
After correcting the file or manifest, request fresh verification from a connected device:

adb shell am start --debug-link -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d "<URL>"If the operating system recognizes the link but the app lands on the wrong screen, inspect the activity’s received intent data and the app’s route parser. Verification selects the app; your app code still has to interpret the URI and map it to the intended destination.
Fix an iOS Universal Link
Check the app entitlement and AASA file
Confirm that the app’s Associated Domains entitlement includes the exact domain, and that the domain serves an Apple App Site Association (AASA) file with an association matching the app and intended paths. Check the HTTP response and file contents if association diagnostics fail. Apple’s debugging guidance says AASA hosting redirects are unsupported; host the association file on each associated domain rather than relying on a redirect. Apple’s TN3155 also describes associated-domain diagnostics and sysdiagnose guidance for difficult cases.

Test by tapping a link, not typing it
Put the HTTPS URL in a clickable link—for example, in Notes—and tap it on the affected iPhone. Typing the URL into Safari’s address bar is not a valid Universal Link test: Apple states that direct address-bar navigation stays in the browser. A same-domain link tapped while browsing in Safari may also remain in Safari because iOS respects the user’s browsing context. If one context fails, test the same clickable URL from another app before concluding that the association is broken.

After the app opens, check that its user-activity handling receives the Universal Link and maps its host, path, and any relevant query parameters to the expected screen. A valid domain association cannot correct a missing or incorrect in-app route. Apple’s Universal Links overview covers the association and app-handling model.

If you use Expo
Expo distinguishes custom-scheme links from verified HTTP(S) links. Android App Links and iOS Universal Links require a domain file establishing control of the domain. Expo Go has limited support for incoming links, so use a development build for a representative test rather than treating Expo Go behavior as proof that a production link is configured correctly. Check both domain association and runtime route mapping. Expo Router enables deep links for screens, but App Links and Universal Links still need the corresponding platform and runtime configuration. If the destination is lost after installation
Ask whether the expected flow is: someone taps a link without the app, installs the app, and then continues to the original content. That is deferred deep linking. Standard App Links and Universal Links can open a destination when the app is installed, but they do not by themselves reproduce every feature previously provided by Firebase Dynamic Links, such as directing users to the appropriate store and carrying the journey through installation. Firebase explains this distinction in its Dynamic Links migration guide. Treat post-install continuation as a separate architecture or service decision, and verify a provider’s current capabilities before adopting it.
Choose the right link type for the job

There is no single defensible code fix without the failing URL, platform, app state, link source, and observed result. Isolating those details tells you whether to repair domain verification, URL matching, app routing, or a deferred-linking flow.
