The usual fix for DayZ’s “Server config not found!” message is to start the executable with an explicit, readable configuration file:

What “Server config not found” means
DayZ does not automatically know which server configuration file to load. The dedicated server expects a configuration argument on its command line. When -config=... is missing, points to the wrong location, or names a file the process cannot read, startup can stop with Server config not found!
That message does not always mean the file is absent from your disk. A file may be present but invisible to the server because:

-config; - a relative path is being resolved from a different working directory;
- the filename or extension is not exactly what it appears to be;
- the launcher, service, or hosting panel is using a different command than the one you edited; or
- the file is readable but contains malformed configuration syntax.
The practical repair is to establish one known-good command, run it from a known directory, and then use the latest log to distinguish a path problem from a content problem.
Use a known-good launch command
A documented dedicated-server pattern is:

If serverDZ.cfg is not in the working directory, change the value after -config= to the correct path. A relative value such as serverDZ.cfg depends on where the process starts, not simply on where the executable is stored.
Step-by-step repair
1. Confirm the exact filename
- Open the folder where you believe the configuration is stored.
- Turn on filename extensions in your file manager so the complete name is visible.
- Confirm the name is exactly
serverDZ.cfg, including the lowercase-style.cfgextension shown in the launch argument. - Rename misleading variants such as
serverDZ.cfg.txt,serverDZ, or a file with a doubled extension.
Text editors can append .txt when saving. The server will not treat that differently named file as serverDZ.cfg.
2. Establish the working directory
With -config=serverDZ.cfg, DayZ resolves the filename relative to the process’s working directory. That directory can differ depending on how the server is launched. Running the executable from a batch file, a shortcut, a service wrapper, or a hosting control panel may produce a different starting location than opening the executable’s folder manually.
For a controlled test, put the executable and serverDZ.cfg in the directory you intend to use, open a command prompt in that directory, and run the complete command shown above. If the file is stored elsewhere, use its correct path after -config= rather than relying on a relative name.
3. Add -config to the launch path that really runs the server
Editing a shortcut does not help if a service or panel starts a separate command. Likewise, testing a command prompt does not fix a scheduled task that still launches only DayZServer_x64.exe. Identify the actual start mechanism and inspect its complete argument list.
- Shortcut: open the shortcut’s target or command-line field and verify that
-config=serverDZ.cfgfollows the executable path. - Batch file: edit the line that invokes
DayZServer_x64.exe; do not add the parameter to a commented-out or unused line. - Service or wrapper: check the service’s executable and arguments. Restart the service after saving the change.
- Hosting panel: locate the server’s startup parameters or command-line settings. A panel may overwrite local edits when it regenerates a start command.
- Steam-launched process: verify the launch options for the dedicated-server entry, then confirm the resulting process command line if the error persists.
A Steam Community discussion about this exact error recommends launching with a -config= parameter and checking that the server configuration file is set correctly. The key point is that the parameter must be present on the command that starts the running process.
4. Give logs a predictable location
Add a writable profiles directory:
-profiles=serverprofileUsing a dedicated profile directory makes it easier to identify the newest log and separates server output from unrelated files. The directory must exist or be creatable by the account running the server, and that account needs write access.

If you change the profile path, look in the new location rather than continuing to read an older log. Timestamps and the first lines of the newest file help confirm that you are diagnosing the current launch attempt.
5. Read the newest log before changing more settings
The latest log is the primary trace for this failure. Search it for the first warning or error associated with configuration loading, not just the final shutdown line.

Do not use an old successful or failed log as proof that a new command was read. Change one thing, start the server, and verify that a new timestamped entry is produced.
6. Validate the file contents after the path is correct
Once the log shows that DayZ reached the file, a remaining startup failure is no longer a simple “not found” problem. Inspect the configuration for malformed syntax, accidental characters, incomplete entries, or values that do not match the expected format.

- Undo the last change if the error started immediately after an edit.
- Check for truncated lines or stray quotation marks introduced by copying and pasting.
- Save the file as plain text with the intended
.cfgextension. - Keep the file in a readable location while testing; move it to a more restricted location only after startup works.
Path errors and syntax errors require different fixes. Reinstalling the server or repeatedly changing ports will not repair malformed configuration text.

- Stop every existing DayZ server process so an older instance cannot confuse the test.
- Open a command prompt in the directory you are testing.
- Run the complete command with
-config, the intended port, and a writable-profilesdirectory. - Wait for startup output and locate the newly created log.
- Compare the first configuration-related message with the previous failure.
- Only after this command succeeds, copy the same arguments into your shortcut, service, script, or hosting panel.
This isolates the file and command line from automation. If the direct command works but the automated launch fails, the remaining fault is in the automation’s working directory or argument list.

The file is beside the executable, but the error remains
Being beside DayZServer_x64.exe is not sufficient when the process starts elsewhere. Check the working directory used by the launcher. Either set that directory explicitly in the launcher or use a path after -config= that resolves from the launcher’s actual location.
The command works manually but not from a shortcut
Compare the shortcut’s full target with the command that worked. Confirm that the executable path is properly separated from -config=serverDZ.cfg, and verify the shortcut’s “Start in” or equivalent working-directory setting. A shortcut can preserve the executable while dropping or misplacing arguments.

The command works manually but not from a batch file
Open the batch file as plain text and inspect the exact active line. Remove a stale test line, make sure the argument is not inside a comment, and confirm that the batch file changes to the intended server directory before starting the executable. Then run the batch file and check that its profile path receives a new log.

A managed panel keeps reverting the fix
Some panels construct the command from fields rather than preserving manual edits. Enter the config filename or path in the panel’s startup-parameter field, save the configuration, and restart from the panel. If the panel offers separate working-directory and profile-path fields, set both consistently. The panel’s displayed command, if available, is the one to compare with the known-good command.
The file is found, but startup reports a syntax problem
Stop changing paths once the log confirms the file was opened. Restore a known-good configuration, then reapply edits in small groups. After each change, start the server and read the newest log. This identifies the invalid line without mixing a content problem with a launch-path problem.
No profile or log directory is created
Check that the account running the server can write to the location supplied after -profiles=. Also confirm that the launch method actually includes that argument. If a panel or service runs under a different account than your interactive command prompt, permissions and visible files can differ.
Choosing a server setup after the repair
The best way to run DayZ depends on how much control and maintenance you need. Fixing the config argument is useful in every setup, but the place where you edit it changes.

A local dedicated server is useful when you need to see and control every path and argument. Managed hosting can remove local maintenance, but it may require entering -config and profile settings in provider-specific fields rather than editing files directly.
Prevention checklist
- Keep the configuration filename exactly
serverDZ.cfgand display extensions when troubleshooting. - Document the working directory used by the real launch method.
- Keep
-config=...in the same startup definition as the executable. - Use a dedicated, writable
-profilesdirectory. - After every launch change, verify a new log rather than reading an old one.

What to remember
“Server config not found” is normally a command-line resolution problem: DayZ cannot resolve or read the file named by -config. Start with the explicit command, verify the exact filename and working directory, apply the argument to the launch path that really runs the server, and use a fresh profile log to decide whether the remaining issue is permissions, path resolution, or malformed configuration content.
