Treat them as two connected diagnostic tracks. First preserve a recoverable copy, then use WordPress Recovery Mode if a fatal error is involved. If wp-admin is unavailable, disable extensions outside the dashboard, regain a clean login, and only then isolate the conflicting component. For a header that is compressed or missing, inspect the theme’s computed CSS, theme.json, templates, and cached assets rather than adding random overrides.

Identify which failure you have
Open the public site in a private browser window and separately test the login URL. The two symptoms can occur together, but they require different evidence.

Do not conclude that a named page builder, browser, host, or PHP version is responsible until disabling or changing that component reproduces the failure and the logs support it.

Preserve a recoverable state before editing
If your host provides a snapshot or backup, create one before changing files or database values. A database edit or folder rename is normally reversible, but a backup gives you a way back if the site has more than one fault.
- Write down the last plugin, theme, Customizer,
theme.json, code, or server change. - Record the WordPress and PHP versions, active theme, affected URLs, and the exact visible error.
- Save the timestamp and, if possible, a copy of relevant PHP or web-server log entries.
- Keep a change log while testing; the first component that reproduces the failure after reactivation is your leading suspect.
Ask your host for a snapshot or temporary staging copy if you do not have a safe backup method. Do not delete a plugin or theme while diagnosing it; disabling preserves its files and settings.

Use WordPress Recovery Mode after a fatal error
Recovery Mode is WordPress’s official first path for many fatal errors. It is built into WordPress 5.2 and later. When WordPress detects a qualifying fatal error, it sends an administrator an email containing a special login link. During that recovery session, WordPress pauses the faulty plugin or theme and identifies the component in the dashboard.
Open and use the recovery link
- Check the administrator mailbox and spam folder for the WordPress Recovery Mode message.
- Follow the time-limited link in that message and sign in with an administrator account.
- Read the notice carefully. It should name the plugin or theme that failed while WordPress was loading.
- Deactivate, repair, or update that component from the recovery screen. Do not reactivate it merely to see whether the message disappears.
- Select Exit Recovery Mode, then test an ordinary login and the public site in a fresh browser session.
Recovery Mode pauses a component for that recovery session; it does not repair defective PHP, CSS, JavaScript, or configuration. If the normal site fails again after you exit, leave the component inactive and continue with the isolation steps below.
When no email arrives
An unavailable mail system, a wrong administrator address, or a failure that occurs before WordPress can send mail can prevent the message. Do not wait indefinitely. Use the least invasive access you have—hosting File Manager or FTP first, then database access, then SSH and WP-CLI—and preserve the original state before changing it.

Disable all plugins without wp-admin
Disabling every plugin is a diagnostic reset, not a permanent solution. It answers whether an extension is involved while leaving plugin files and settings intact.

- Open the site’s document root and locate
wp-content/plugins. - Rename that directory to a temporary name such as
plugins.hold. WordPress can no longer load the plugins from the expected path, so they are disabled. - Try the login and the public site. If both work, the failure is likely in a plugin or in an interaction between a plugin and the theme.
- After access returns, rename
plugins.holdback toplugins. - Reactivate plugins one at a time, testing both a normal dashboard page and the public header after each activation.
Use the original folder name exactly when restoring it. Leaving the temporary name in place can make later maintenance confusing, even though it is a useful emergency measure.
Method 2: phpMyAdmin
If you cannot access files but can access the site database, open the table whose name ends in options (the prefix may not be wp_). Find the row where option_name is active_plugins and replace its serialized value with a:0:{}. Save the row, test the login, and make a backup of the original value before restoring or editing it.
This change deactivates every plugin. Serialized options are syntax-sensitive; an incorrect edit can create a new error. If you are not comfortable identifying the correct database, table prefix, or row, ask your host or a WordPress developer to perform the change.
Use WP-CLI when shell access is available
WP-CLI can bootstrap WordPress while bypassing extension code. Run commands from the directory containing wp-config.php, and substitute your own site URL or paths where needed.

Bypass plugins and themes for a test
wp core version --skip-plugins --skip-themes
wp plugin list --skip-plugins --skip-themes
wp theme list --skip-plugins --skip-themes
wp option get active_plugins --skip-plugins --skip-themesThe first command confirms that WordPress core can load without extension code. The list commands show what is installed while bypassing normal plugin and theme loading. If the commands still fail, the problem may be core files, PHP, the database connection, or server configuration rather than a single extension.
Disable plugins or switch to a default theme
wp plugin deactivate --all --skip-plugins --skip-themes
wp theme activate twentytwentyfive --skip-plugins --skip-themesUse a current default theme that is actually installed; the theme name above is an example, not a requirement. If no suitable default theme is installed, upload one through the normal WordPress process or ask the host to help. Test the header and dashboard after the switch before changing anything else.
Expose bootstrap errors
wp --debug --skip-plugins --skip-themes core version
wp --debug --skip-plugins --skip-themes plugin listThe global --debug flag can reveal PHP warnings and fatal errors that a blank browser page hides. Capture the complete output, including the file path and line number, before editing code. Do not paste credentials or database passwords into a support ticket.
Diagnose a collapsed or missing header
Once the dashboard is usable—or while the public site remains available—treat the header as a front-end layout problem until evidence points elsewhere. Test at the viewport where the collapse occurs and at a second width so you can distinguish a breakpoint rule from a global error.

Inspect the rendered element
- Open browser developer tools and use the element picker on the outer header wrapper, navigation container, logo, and any mobile-menu button.
- In the Computed panel, check
height,min-height,padding,margin,overflow,display,position,top,z-index, and flex or grid sizing. - Look for a zero or unexpectedly small height,
overflow: hiddenclipping children,display: none, an absolutely positioned element without a suitable containing block, or flex/grid rules that shrink the navigation. - Disable suspicious declarations temporarily in developer tools. If the header immediately reappears, record the selector and source file before making a permanent change.
- Check the Console for JavaScript errors and the Network panel for CSS, font, image, or script requests that return errors or are blocked.
A declaration disabled in developer tools is only a test; it disappears on refresh. Copy the winning rule, media query, and stylesheet location into your change log.

Check responsive rules
Resize the viewport across the failing breakpoint. A header that works on desktop but collapses at one width often has a media-query rule changing height, display, positioning, or flex direction. Check whether a mobile menu script fails to add or remove its expected class. A JavaScript error elsewhere on the page can stop that toggle even when the CSS is correct.

Review the most recent change first, then move from global settings to component-specific files. This order avoids masking a configuration problem with an increasingly specific CSS override.
1. Customizer and Additional CSS
Open the active theme’s Customizer or site editor and inspect recently added CSS, spacing controls, header-height settings, and visibility options. Remove one recent rule at a time on a staging copy or after saving the original text. Pay particular attention to broad selectors such as header, nav, or a class shared by both desktop and mobile markup.

2. theme.json and global styles
Block themes use theme.json and the global Styles system for much of their typography, spacing, dimensions, layout, and responsive behavior. Review recent changes to settings and styles that affect the header’s minimum height, padding, spacing, or layout. Cached theme.json data can delay a visible update; during development, WP_DEBUG or SCRIPT_DEBUG can help force fresh data to load. Do not enable debugging on a public site without planning how to protect error output.
3. style.css and child-theme styles
Inspect the active theme’s style.css, child-theme stylesheet, and the order in which they are enqueued. A stylesheet that is not properly loaded cannot fix the layout; a child-theme rule loaded before the parent may be overridden. Block themes generally put more design control in theme.json, but style.css can still alter the rendered design when it is correctly loaded.
4. Header templates and custom-header settings
Check the header template or template part for missing wrappers, unclosed markup, empty navigation containers, and classes expected by the theme’s CSS or JavaScript. Custom headers are optional theme features; themes that support them may declare flexible width and height. A mismatch between the image dimensions, template markup, and CSS can make the visible area appear collapsed even when the outer header has a normal height.
5. Plugin assets and caches
Inspect CSS and JavaScript generated by plugins, optimization tools, and page caches. Clear the plugin or server cache, CDN cache, and browser cache only after recording the current state. If a minified file contains the bad rule, temporarily disable minification or combine features so you can identify the original source.

- Make a backup or snapshot and note the current theme and customizations.
- Activate an installed current default theme through the dashboard, WP-CLI, or the database-safe recovery method available to you.
- Load the public site in a private window and test the same viewport sizes.
- If the header returns, compare the original theme’s header template,
theme.json, and stylesheets with the default theme before restoring the original. - If the header remains broken, inspect cached assets, server-side errors, and the page’s rendered markup rather than adding more theme CSS.
A working default theme strongly implicates the original theme or its interaction with an extension; it does not identify the exact line. A broken header on both themes shifts attention to cached files, malformed content, plugin-generated assets, or the server response.
Restore extensions one at a time and verify both surfaces
After a clean login, restore the original folder or database state if you used an emergency disable. Then activate one plugin at a time. After each activation, perform the same checks:
- Open a normal dashboard page and save a harmless setting only if needed.
- Load the public home page and the page that shows the collapsed header.
- Test the affected desktop and mobile viewport widths.
- Watch the browser console and server/PHP logs for a new error.
If one activation reproduces the fault, leave it inactive and document its version, the WordPress/PHP versions, and the exact reproduction steps. If no single plugin fails, test combinations involving the active theme and the last few extensions; conflicts can require two components even when each works alone.
Common failure branches and safe responses

After recovery: make the fix durable
- Update WordPress, the active theme, and extensions from a tested backup or staging copy, not while the site is already unstable.
- Keep only the extensions you need and remove abandoned code after exporting any settings you must retain.
- Store Customizer CSS,
theme.json, child-theme files, and template changes in a versioned copy. - Keep debugging output private. Use logging rather than displaying errors to visitors on a production site.
- Document the final cause, the rollback method, and the exact component versions so a future incident can be reversed quickly.
- Arrange host or maintenance help if you have no reliable FTP, database, or WP-CLI access; attempting a serialized database edit without a backup creates avoidable risk.
The safest resolution is the smallest confirmed change: use Recovery Mode for a fatal error, disable extensions without deleting them when the dashboard is locked, isolate the first reproducible conflict, and fix the header in its actual theme or asset layer.
