How to Fix a Chromebook That Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi

Work through Chromebook Wi-Fi checks in order: run diagnostics, forget and rejoin the network, compare devices and connections, and troubleshoot public sign-in pages or router problems.

If your Chromebook won’t connect to Wi-Fi, first confirm it is selecting the right network, run ChromeOS Diagnostics, and restart the device. Then forget and rejoin the saved network, compare the Chromebook with another device or network, and check the router only if those tests point to it. Test after each step so you can identify where the failure lies.

1. Check the connection and run diagnostics

  1. Confirm Wi-Fi is on and the Chromebook is trying to join the intended network. Check that you have selected the right network rather than a nearby network with a similar name.

  2. Open the Diagnostics app and run its network or connectivity checks. The app is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later; Google describes its connection troubleshooting sequence in Use Diagnostics to troubleshoot your issue.

  1. Open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Known networks.

  2. Select the affected network, then choose Forget.

  3. Return to the Wi-Fi network list, select that network, and enter its current password.

Test What the result suggests Next step
Connect the Chromebook to a different Wi-Fi network. If it connects elsewhere, the issue is more likely specific to the original network or its settings. Check the original network’s router, modem, or administration settings.
Connect another device to the original Wi-Fi. If other devices also fail, the problem is more likely with the network than with the Chromebook. Check the router, modem, internet service, or network configuration.
Try Ethernet using a workable cable and, if needed, a USB Ethernet adapter. If wired internet works on the Chromebook, that helps separate the Wi-Fi connection from broader network access. Check the Wi-Fi/router side. If wired access fails too, compare with another computer and check the cable or adapter.

These comparisons follow Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance. A USB Ethernet adapter is optional diagnostic equipment, not a Wi-Fi repair; check that its connector works with your Chromebook before buying one.

4. Check the router if other devices or tests point to it

If the Chromebook works on another network, or multiple devices cannot use the same Wi-Fi, troubleshoot the network side. Google’s ChromeOS guidance includes restarting the modem and router, checking for router firmware updates, and trying a different router channel as possible steps. See Resolve common issues with ChromeOS devices.

5. Handle public Wi-Fi sign-in pages

At a hotel, airport, school, or other location with a captive portal, the Chromebook may join Wi-Fi without reaching the internet until you complete the network’s sign-in page. Google recommends opening a web address that begins with http:// to prompt the portal. If the sign-in page still does not appear, temporarily turn off Chrome extensions if you are allowed to do so. Google’s connection help covers this step.

If the Chromebook requires network activation before you can sign in to your account, choose Browse as Guest on the sign-in screen, connect to Wi-Fi, and complete the portal steps there. See Google’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check for updates and get help when needed

When the Chromebook can get online, open Settings > About ChromeOS and check for an available update. Google explains the update process in Update your Chromebook’s operating system. If an update or network change is blocked by work or school policy, ask the administrator to check the device or network configuration.

If the connection steps do not fix the issue, contact the Chromebook’s manufacturer for model-specific support, as Google recommends in its connection troubleshooting guide.
