The good news: a lot of “bricks” are recoverable with the right Safe Mode steps and a clean USB system software reinstall.
This guide walks you through five working solutions for 2024, with exact button combos, USB formatting rules, and what to try when the main method fails. Use the order below if you can, but feel free to jump to the solution that matches your symptoms.

First: identify the failure mode
Before you start, take 30 seconds to categorize what your PS5 is doing. That determines whether you should rebuild, reinstall system software, or stop and escalate to hardware service.

- Stuck on the PlayStation logo (often loops or never finishes loading).
- Black screen with sound (or none), sometimes only when plugged into a specific HDMI port/TV.
- Safe Mode screen appears but system won’t boot normally.
- Safe Mode won’t appear (button combo doesn’t work; device reboots or stays dark).
- USB reinstall errors (fails at a percentage, shows an error code, or restarts repeatedly).
If you’re not sure, try Solution 1 (Safe Mode → Rebuild Database). It’s low risk and fixes many boot issues caused by corrupted data.

Prerequisites before you start
Some solutions require a USB drive and the correct PS5 system software package. Gather these first so you don’t waste time mid-recovery.
- USB drive: 1GB to 32GB, formatted as exFAT or FAT32 (PS5 supports FAT32 reliably for system software).
- PC or Mac to download the PS5 system software file.
- HDMI cable (try a different one if you only see a black screen).
- Controller for Safe Mode navigation (USB cable recommended for setup).
- Patience: reinstall can take 15–45 minutes depending on the package and USB speed.
Data note: Rebuild Database usually doesn’t delete your games, but reinstalling system software can remove installed games and may require re-sign-in to PlayStation Network. If possible, prioritize steps that don’t reinstall system software first.
5 Working Solutions (2024)
These are the fastest recovery paths that consistently work for PS5 “bricks.” Start with Solution 1 unless your PS5 already won’t boot at all—in that case, jump to USB reinstall (Solution 3 or 4).
1) Boot Safe Mode and try Rebuild Database
If your PS5 shows a boot loop or can reach Safe Mode, Rebuild Database is the safest first move. It scans the drive and repairs issues in the internal database of installed content.
How to enter Safe Mode: Power off the PS5 completely (hold the power button until it turns off). Then press and hold the power button again. Release after you hear the second beep. Connect the controller via USB and select the option when Safe Mode loads.
Step: In Safe Mode, choose Rebuild Database (option typically labeled “Rebuild Database”). Confirm and wait. When done, restart normally and test.
2) Boot Safe Mode and restore default settings
If you suspect a display/settings issue (black screen, odd resolution behavior) or a problematic configuration update, restoring defaults can clear broken system settings without a full reinstall.

- FAT32 pre-formatted for broad compatibility: These drives work with Windows (XP through 11), macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Smart TVs, Car Stereos, and USB-enabled printers without requiring drivers or software installation. For files larger than 4GB, reformat to exFAT using the built-in format utility on your computer.
- 31 labels included – pre-printed and blank: Each pack contains 19 pre-printed color-coded labels and 12 blank white labels for organizing drives by project, department, person, or event category. Labels attach directly to each drive for quick identification during multi-user distributions.
Enter Safe Mode using the same second-beep method. Then select Restore Default Settings and confirm.
After reboot, re-check HDMI settings on your TV and PS5. If your TV is picky, test a different HDMI port and ensure the cable is secure on both ends.
3) Boot Safe Mode and update or reinstall system software from USB
If Safe Mode loads but normal boot fails, use USB recovery. This is the most common way to recover from corrupted system software.
Step 1: On your PC/Mac, download the official PS5 system software from PlayStation’s support site (search “PS5 system software update” and download the latest file).
Step 2 (USB folder): Create a folder named PS5 on the USB drive. Inside it, create UPDATE. Place the downloaded file into UPDATE. The PS5 typically expects a file name formatted like a system update package (the exact filename comes from Sony’s download page).
Step 3: Put the USB drive into the PS5 and boot Safe Mode. Choose either Update System Software or Reinstall System Software depending on what options you see.
Step 4: Follow on-screen prompts and wait. Do not power off mid-install.

4) Create a clean reinstall: full USB reinstall with fresh download
If you tried Solution 3 and it fails (error code, restart loop, install stuck at the same step), do a “clean reinstall” with a fresh download and careful USB formatting. Bricks often recover once the package matches what the PS5 expects.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do this before reinstall: Re-download the PS5 system software package (don’t reuse an older file). Confirm the USB is formatted correctly (FAT32 is the safest bet for system update workflows).
USB structure: USB:PS5UPDATE then the downloaded update file directly in UPDATE. Don’t add extra folders and don’t put the PS5 folder inside another PS5 folder.
Safe Mode action: Choose Reinstall System Software. If prompted, proceed with the full install. After it finishes, restart and sign in.
Tip: Use USB ports carefully—prefer a rear port on the PS5 (if your model has them accessible) and avoid hubs/adapters.
5) If USB recovery fails: power-cycling, inspect power/HDMI, then contact Sony
When Safe Mode entries and USB reinstall don’t work, the issue may be hardware-related (power supply instability, failing storage, or a controller/power-button problem). At this point, you should stop repeated installs and focus on safe diagnostics.
Quick checks: Try a different HDMI cable and a different HDMI port on your TV. Power off fully and unplug the PS5 from the wall for 2–5 minutes, then plug back in. If you have external storage, disconnect it and try again.

Escalate: If the system can’t complete reinstall or keeps erroring after a verified USB package, contact PlayStation Support or prepare for service/warranty evaluation. Repeated power interruptions during reinstall can turn a software fault into a bigger hardware issue.
When Safe Mode won’t appear
If holding the power button doesn’t trigger the second beep and Safe Mode never loads, don’t keep guessing. Try a structured approach.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Confirm full power-off: Hold the power button until it turns off (no breathing light / no activity). Unplug the power cable after shutdown.
- Second-beep attempt: Plug back in, then press and hold the power button. Release only after the second beep.
- Use a USB controller cable: Some controllers won’t reliably pair during boot recovery. Plug directly into the PS5.
- Try another power outlet: Outlet instability can cause repeated resets and prevent Safe Mode from starting.
- Remove distractions: Disconnect USB devices, external drives, and accessories.
If none of this works and you’re unable to enter Safe Mode even after a clean power cycle, treat it as potentially hardware-related and move toward Sony service.
What to do if the USB install stops, errors, or loops
USB installs fail for a few predictable reasons: wrong file, wrong folder names, wrong formatting, or a corrupted download. Fix those first before changing anything else.
- Wrong folder structure is the #1 issue. Use exactly
PS5andUPDATEwith the update file insideUPDATE. - Wrong formatting: if your USB is exFAT, try FAT32. If it’s FAT32 and still fails, try a different USB stick.
- Corrupted download: re-download from Sony and try again.
- Power interruption: if the PS5 restarts mid-install, stop and redo the reinstall with a fresh USB after letting the system cool off.
- Storage instability: if the reinstall always fails at the same stage, the internal SSD or related hardware might be failing.
If you see an error code, write it down. Even without a perfect code-to-fix mapping, a consistent failure code strongly suggests hardware problems when repeated with a verified USB package.
Bricked PS5 vs. just a boot hang: quick comparisons
Not every “can’t start” PS5 is bricked. This quick comparison helps you choose the right path.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Stuck on logo, but Safe Mode works | Corrupted database or partial system content | Rebuild Database (Solution 1) |
| Safe Mode works, normal boot fails after update | System software corruption | Reinstall from USB (Solution 3/4) |
| Black screen only on TV, Safe Mode appears | HDMI/Display settings | Restore Default Settings (Solution 2), change HDMI cable/port |
| No Safe Mode entry, device won’t stay on | Possible hardware/power fault | Power outlet/cycle checks, then Sony service (Solution 5) |
Common mistakes that worsen the brick
- Powering off during reinstall. That can corrupt more than you started with.
- Using the wrong folder names (for example, PS5 update instead of
PS5andUPDATE). - Forgetting to re-download after a failed attempt. A bad file can repeat the same failure.
- Using a USB hub or a failing USB stick. Try a simple, direct USB drive.
- Over-cleaning your settings. Restoring defaults is fine, but don’t keep changing system settings when you should reinstall.
How to prevent future bricks
PS5 bricks usually follow a small number of triggers: unstable power, interrupted updates, or corrupted downloads. You can reduce risk fast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Safe Mode Rebuild Database delete my games?
Typically no. Rebuild Database repairs the internal catalog of content. If you’re able to boot into the system, avoid going straight to reinstall unless you must.
Do I need to back up saves before fixing a bricked PS5?
If you can still sign in or access your storage, back up to PlayStation Plus cloud saves or to an external drive. If your PS5 is fully bricked and won’t boot, reinstall may still be necessary, but do the backup only if you have any chance to access it first.
What USB size and formatting works best?
For most cases, a 1–16GB USB stick formatted as FAT32 is the most reliable. Avoid complex partitioning, USB hubs, or heavily customized drives.
My PS5 won’t enter Safe Mode. Is it definitely hardware?
Not always, but it’s the stronger possibility. Double-check the second-beep method, try a different outlet, disconnect all USB devices, and use a wired controller. If Safe Mode still never appears, service is the practical next step.
How long should USB reinstall take?
Expect something like 15–45 minutes depending on package size and USB speed. If it stalls for a long time, don’t repeatedly restart—confirm USB structure and file correctness, then redo the reinstall once you’re sure the media is valid.
Bottom Line
If your PS5 is bricked, your best path is structured recovery: start with Safe Mode and Rebuild Database when possible, then move to a correct USB reinstall if system software is the issue. The majority of recoverable cases come down to Safe Mode entry and USB folder/file accuracy.
If USB recovery repeatedly fails even with a verified fresh download, treat it as likely hardware-related and contact PlayStation Support rather than continuing power cycles. That approach protects the system from further damage and gets you to a resolution faster.
