Start with the lens and lighting, then compare the built-in Camera preview with your video-call app. A smudge, dim room, backlight, app setting, or weak call connection can make a laptop webcam look poor; changing drivers or buying a camera should come later, if at all.
1. Check the lens and anything covering it
Look for a privacy shutter, removable cover, dust, fingerprints, or visible damage. Gently wipe the lens with a clean, soft microfiber cloth; Dell recommends this approach for cleaning a camera lens. Avoid pressing hard or using abrasive materials. Microsoft also lists a dirty or damaged lens as a possible cause of blurry or low-quality video.

2. Improve the light on your face
Turn toward even light so your face is lit from the front. Avoid sitting with a bright window or lamp behind you: backlighting can make the camera image harder to see. Lenovo’s guidance specifically recommends increasing room light when video looks grainy, while Dell advises using proper lighting and avoiding a light source behind you.

3. Compare the Camera preview with your call app
Open the built-in Camera app and inspect its preview in the same room and lighting. Then compare it with the image in your meeting or video-call app. This helps separate a camera-image problem from an app-specific one.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Preview is clear, but one call app looks poor: Check that app’s selected camera, available resolution or video-quality settings, and any effects or filters. Microsoft says a camera that works in one app but not another points to app settings.
- Preview and several apps look poor: Recheck the lens and lighting, then look for resolution controls in the camera or conferencing app. If the image remains poor under good lighting, a model-specific camera limitation or hardware issue becomes more plausible, though this comparison alone cannot diagnose the cause.
Menu names and controls vary by laptop model, Windows version, camera driver, and conferencing app. Follow the instructions for your specific device and app rather than assuming every laptop has the same options.
4. Check call quality and connection
If the built-in preview looks good but video becomes blurry or grainy during calls, test the call rather than assuming the webcam is faulty. End and restart the call, check the app’s available video-quality settings, and see whether the connection is stable. Lenovo suggests reconnecting Wi-Fi or trying a wired network; Microsoft also identifies network issues and poor resolution as possible contributors to low-quality video.

5. Decide whether the built-in camera is the problem
If a clean lens and better lighting do not help, and the same poor image appears in the Camera preview and multiple apps, check the laptop maker’s support information for your exact model. Inspect for visible camera damage. Microsoft lists faulty camera hardware as a possible camera problem, but there is no universal diagnosis or repair procedure based on image quality alone.

What blurry and grainy usually point to
| What you see | Checks to try first |
|---|---|
| Grainy image, especially in a dim room | Add even light in front of you; Lenovo specifically recommends increasing room light for grainy video. |
| Soft or out-of-focus image | Inspect and gently clean the lens, then compare the Camera preview with the app and check available resolution settings. |
| Image is good in preview but poor during calls | Check the call app’s camera selection, effects, quality settings, and connection. |
| Image stays poor across apps in good light | Check the exact laptop model’s support guidance and inspect for lens or camera damage; this pattern is a clue, not a confirmed hardware diagnosis. |
Cleaning and lighting are low-risk first steps. Do not assume a driver update will fix blur: Microsoft’s driver instructions chiefly address cameras that are not working, while its blurry-video guidance emphasizes the lens, resolution, and network checks.
