If a Blu-ray disc won’t play, first test whether the problem follows the disc or stays with the player. Then check the disc’s condition, orientation, format and region, and use only the firmware and reset steps approved for your exact player model. These checks can help you avoid replacing a good disc—or troubleshooting a player when the disc is the problem.
First, find out whether the disc or player is at fault
Try a different, known-good disc with similar specifications in the same player. If possible, also test the problem disc in another player that supports its format and region. Sony recommends both checks to help isolate the cause (Sony: Unable to play a Blu-ray Disc movie).

- Only one disc fails in your player: inspect and clean it, then check its format and region. If you can, test it in another compatible player.
- The suspect disc fails in multiple compatible players: it may be damaged, defective or incorrectly authored.
- Several known-good discs fail in one player: check format support, install any applicable official firmware update, and power-reset the player. If the problem continues, contact the manufacturer.
Inspect and gently clean the disc
Check that the disc is inserted with its playing side facing the direction indicated by the player. Look for fingerprints, stains, dust, scratches or cracks. Sony and Panasonic recommend wiping dirt or smudges gently with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe carefully so you do not add scratches (Sony; Panasonic).

Sony warns that disc and lens cleaners—including wet and spray types—may cause malfunction on the player models covered by its guidance. For other models, follow the owner’s manual rather than assuming those cleaners are safe.

Check the disc format and region
A disc that looks like a Blu-ray is not necessarily supported by every player. Check the player’s manual or official model support page and the disc packaging for the exact format and region information before concluding either is faulty.
Movie discs and region codes
Sony describes Blu-ray regions as A, B and C; some discs are marked ABC to indicate region-free playback. A disc’s region generally needs to match the player’s region. Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free, but they still require a player that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray. See Sony’s playback troubleshooting and Sony’s region-code guidance for details.

If the player displays “INCOMPATIBLE REGION CODE,” compare the region on the disc case with the player’s region information. If they appear to match, check the support page for your exact model; Sony has model-specific guidance for this error (Sony support).

Do not assume that a player reads every recordable Blu-ray disc. BD-R and BD-RE playback can depend on the player model, firmware and recording format. Sony documents an update for BDMV playback on certain players, but that guidance excludes BDAV; check whether your exact model and recording format are covered (Sony: Unable to play BD-R or BD-RE discs).

Update and power-reset the player
If the disc is compatible and multiple discs are affected, visit the official support page for the player’s exact model and follow its firmware instructions. Some title or format compatibility issues may be addressed by firmware, but an update is useful only if it applies to your model (Sony playback guidance; Sony BD-R/BD-RE guidance).
- Remove the disc and turn off the player.
- Unplug the player and wait for the period specified in its manual or model support instructions.
- Reconnect power, turn the player on, and retry the disc.
Sony recommends a power reset as part of its troubleshooting. The precise reset procedure and waiting time can vary by model, so use the instructions for your player (Sony: Unable to play a Blu-ray Disc movie).

When to stop troubleshooting
If a disc still fails in more than one compatible player after careful cleaning and format and region checks, it may be defective. If multiple known-good discs fail in one player after applicable updates and a reset, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Sony and Panasonic both direct users toward service when supported troubleshooting does not resolve playback problems (Sony; Panasonic).
