A black screen in an OBS YouTube Live loop can come from the local video source, OBS rendering load, or the outgoing stream. First check whether the OBS preview and a local recording are also black; that tells you whether to troubleshoot playback inside OBS or YouTube ingest. There is no single guaranteed fix without details such as your operating system, OBS version, video codec, GPU, and OBS log.
First identify where the screen is black
Check the OBS preview, a short local recording, and the YouTube player separately. Also note whether the video’s audio continues. These observations help distinguish a local source or rendering problem from an outgoing-stream problem.

- OBS preview and local recording are both black: start with the source, file, and scene checks below.
- OBS preview and recording look right, but YouTube is black: inspect the stream output and YouTube stream health.
- Only the preview is black: compare it with a local recording before changing encoder settings.
- Audio plays but video does not: record that detail; it can help narrow the issue, but does not by itself identify the cause.
Fix the local OBS Media Source path
1. Confirm the source and file
For a video stored on your computer, use an OBS Media Source or VLC Source. In the scene you intend to stream, confirm that the source is present, visible, and pointed to the intended file. If you are capturing a browser or desktop instead of loading a local file, troubleshoot that capture source separately; it is a different path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Test in a simple scene
Temporarily remove other demanding sources, filters, and animated overlays, then test the video in a simple scene. Sources, filters, and complex scenes can consume resources, so this comparison can show whether the broader scene contributes to the problem. It does not prove that scene complexity is the only cause.

3. Compare with a smaller video file
If your stream output is below 4K, or OBS displays the source scaled down, test a lower-resolution copy of the same video. OBS notes that a 4K file may be unnecessary in those situations and recommends lower-resolution media as a way to reduce workload. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
Check OBS performance separately from playback
If OBS is lagging or reporting an encoding overload, check whether other GPU-intensive applications are running. On Windows, OBS’s quick step is to close OBS and reopen it with Run as administrator. If symptoms continue, test one change at a time: simplify the scene, disable costly filters, or reduce the output resolution or frame rate. OBS performance guidance identifies GPU workload and scene complexity as relevant factors.

Encoding and Media Source playback are related to overall system workload but are not the same diagnosis. OBS generally recommends using a supported hardware encoder to move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Changing encoders may help encoding performance; the cited guidance does not establish it as a universal fix for a black Media Source.
Check YouTube settings only if the outgoing stream is affected
If the OBS preview and local recording are normal but the YouTube player is black or the stream is unhealthy, check the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, bitrate, upload headroom, and YouTube stream-health status. YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations accessed in 2026 specify these H.264 bitrates:

| Live output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
These figures are recommendations for YouTube ingest, not minimums for playing a file locally in OBS. Match the recommendation to your actual stream resolution and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends testing in advance with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance also says: “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available.”
If the black screen persists, gather evidence
Before making more changes, note the operating system and version, OBS version, GPU and driver, file container and codec, source type, and whether audio plays. Record whether the preview, local recording, and YouTube player are black. Include an OBS log when seeking help through the OBS Help portal; OBS’s official support materials and forums can help with system-specific cases.
