First find where the picture disappears: OBS preview, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or only public playback. That split tells you whether to investigate the source and graphics inside the VPS, OBS rendering and encoding, or the connection to YouTube.
Find where the picture first disappears
Test the same scene and stream in order. YouTube recommends checking source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, a local archive, and outbound connectivity when diagnosing a live stream: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.

- OBS preview: Is the intended image visible in the active scene?
- Local recording: Make a short recording and play the saved file. Does it contain the picture?
- Live Control Room: Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Is the preview black, delayed, or showing an encoder or stream problem?
- Public playback: If the control-room preview looks right, check whether the watch page behaves differently.
If the preview and recording are already black, start with the scene source and the VPS’s graphics environment. If the local file is good but YouTube’s preview is black or unhealthy, inspect the encoder output and outbound path. A healthy-looking encoder with a bad YouTube result can point to connectivity; poor-looking output can indicate a source or routing problem.
If the OBS preview or local recording is black
Check the source and the VPS session
Confirm that the intended source is in the active scene, visible, and not obscured by another source. Check that the window, display, game, browser, media file, or capture device you selected actually exists and is available inside the VPS session. A desktop capture can show a blank or different surface if the guest session is not displaying the content you expect.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Note the source type, guest operating system and version, OBS version, and any relevant OBS log messages before changing settings. OBS publishes baseline graphics requirements of DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics for Windows and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics for Linux/Unix, while cautioning that compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming or recording capability: OBS Studio system requirements. Meeting those minimums is not proof that a particular VPS can capture or render your scene.
Apply capture advice only to the matching Windows setup
OBS documents a newer Windows display-capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. If display capture fails on a supported setup, its guide suggests manually selecting the Windows 10 capture method: OBS display-capture guidance. The guide also discusses historical multi-GPU issues and laptop GPU preferences. Do not assume those laptop steps apply to a virtual server: first establish which graphics adapters the guest sees and what display surface the source is capturing.

Separate a black source from a rendering problem
If OBS reports rendering lag, encoding overload, or dropped frames, inspect OBS statistics and the VPS’s CPU and GPU use. OBS explains that scene complexity and competing GPU work can leave insufficient time for compositing and rendering; reducing workload is appropriate when overload is actually present: OBS rendering and performance guidance.
- Temporarily simplify the scene and disable unnecessary animated or GPU-intensive elements.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the current workload is beyond the guest’s capability.
- Repeat a short local recording and check whether the picture and performance improve.
These steps address measured performance pressure; they do not establish that overload caused every black screen. If the preview is visible but the local recording or stream is black, compare the output and inspect the OBS log rather than guessing at a driver, plug-in, or GPU switch.

If the local recording is good but YouTube is black
Check the encoder and outbound connection
In YouTube Live Control Room, review the preview, stream health, and any encoder messages. Check OBS for encoder errors and CPU load, and confirm that the local archive still looks right. If OBS cannot start sending, verify that it is using the correct YouTube stream key. If the local output is healthy but YouTube reports a connection or ingest problem, test the VPS’s outbound upload path and capacity rather than changing a working capture source.
Match encoder settings to the chosen profile
YouTube’s recommendations for standard RTMP/RTMPS streams include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the matching profile rather than treating one number as a universal remedy: YouTube encoder settings.

| Example H.264 profile | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed H.264 profiles, not universal fixes or evidence about the cause of a black screen. Use the bitrate recommendation for the actual resolution and frame rate you select.
Test before going live

When an OVHcloud GPU instance may be relevant
“OVHcloud VPS” does not identify the product or show whether a GPU is available to the guest. OVHcloud’s cited GPU guidance applies to Public Cloud GPU instances, not necessarily to an existing VPS plan. It describes PCI passthrough, which lets the guest operating system control the GPU, and lists model, region, image, and operating-system considerations: OVHcloud GPU instance deployment and OVHcloud GPU instance support.
Consider a GPU instance only if diagnosis shows that the current guest lacks graphics capability needed by the capture or rendering setup. A GPU does not fix a hidden or incorrect source, a mismatched capture method, or a YouTube ingest problem. Confirm the current instance model, region, OS image, and driver compatibility in OVHcloud’s documentation before migrating.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS preview and local recording are black | Active scene, source visibility, source availability inside the VPS session, graphics devices, and OBS log. |
| OBS preview is visible, but recording is black | Compare the recording output and inspect the OBS log; the available guidance does not establish one specific cause for this VPS configuration. |
| Local recording is good, YouTube preview is black or unhealthy | Encoder errors, stream key, Live Control Room messages, CPU load, and outbound connectivity. |
| Picture appears but frames drop or OBS reports overload | OBS statistics and CPU/GPU utilization; simplify the scene or reduce output demand, then retest locally. |
| OBS display capture fails on Windows | Check Windows and OBS versions against the documented capture method and confirm what display the VPS session exposes. |
| YouTube preview is good but public playback differs | Compare the control-room preview with the watch page and allow for differences in playback delay before changing encoder settings. |
What to collect if the problem remains
A specific diagnosis needs details that “OVHcloud VPS” alone does not provide. Record the guest OS and version, exact OVHcloud offer and region, whether a GPU appears in the guest, OBS version, source type, whether the OBS preview and local recording are black, and any relevant OBS statistics or log messages. Also note what Live Control Room reports. Those details distinguish source, graphics, performance, and ingest issues without treating an infrastructure change as a first-line fix.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a fix for OBS capture: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
