A black screen at each lesson change usually calls for checking the video source and playlist first—not changing bitrate or blaming YouTube. Compare the same moment in OBS, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and public playback to find the first place the picture disappears. That identifies whether to inspect lesson playback, the encoder-to-YouTube connection or an individual viewer’s device.
Locate where the picture first disappears
Note whether the black interval occurs at every lesson boundary, only when the playlist restarts, after a scene change or unpredictably. Compare that same moment at each available stage:

- OBS preview: Check whether the active scene shows the lesson or goes black at the transition.
- Local recording: If you record the encoder output, review the corresponding moment. A black interval here points toward the source or encoder path.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Compare its preview with OBS and check the Health Indicator for timestamped errors.
- Public playback: Ask whether other viewers see the same interval, preferably viewers on different connections.
This is a practical localization sequence based on YouTube’s troubleshooting branches, not a prescribed YouTube test order. YouTube advises comparing the encoder, dashboard and local archive. One viewer reporting a problem points more toward that viewer’s device or connection; reports from viewers sharing a network suggest a shared-network problem; reports from many viewers on different connections can point toward the encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

One lesson file: check Media Source
- Confirm the intended scene is active and the Media Source is enabled and visible.
- In the source’s properties, check Loop if the file should repeat.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents that this setting hides the source when its media completes; if the source is expected to stay visible, verify that this behavior is intended.
Several lesson files: check VLC Video and playlist visibility
- Confirm the playlist contains the intended files in the intended order.
- Check Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after the last item.
- Check Visibility Behaviour and make sure the active scene and source remain visible across the transition.
- OBS requires VLC to be installed for VLC Video to appear as an available source.
OBS documents looping and visibility controls, but does not promise gapless transitions between separate files. If a short black interval appears at every boundary despite the source settings being correct, one possible workflow is to edit lessons into a continuous reel and test it; that is not a guaranteed repair. After changing settings, make a local recording or short test stream long enough to capture a full lesson boundary before relying on the 24/7 feed. OBS’s media-source documentation was dated January 11, 2022, so labels may differ in a newer installed version. See OBS’s media sources documentation.
If OBS looks healthy but YouTube is black or reports an error
Open YouTube Live Control Room and read the Health Indicator messages and timestamps. YouTube’s error guidance covers issues including video or audio format, bitrate, audio settings, video settings, and missing or multiple streams. Follow the error that matches your stream rather than changing settings by guesswork.

- Match the error timestamp to the black interval and the corresponding moment in OBS or the local archive.
- Check the selected resolution’s current encoder settings in YouTube’s live-stream setup and troubleshooting guidance.
- If encoder output appears healthy, check for encoder errors, CPU load and outbound connection problems, then compare the dashboard with the local archive.
There is no single bitrate to recommend without the resolution, frame rate, codec and stable upload capacity. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and encoder setup guidance should be checked for the configuration you actually use; settings can change.

Do not change the encoder solely because one viewer reports black video. Ask that viewer to try another device or connection, and compare with a viewer elsewhere. If affected viewers share one network, investigate that network; if reports come from viewers on different networks, compare their timing with OBS and Live Control Room before changing the stream. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes viewer-side, shared-network and encoder-side reports.

When network troubleshooting is relevant
A black interval precisely at lesson boundaries is not, by itself, evidence of a network fault. Investigate the connection when OBS reports dropped frames, YouTube shows connection-related errors, the local output and YouTube preview disagree, or the stream is unstable outside lesson transitions.
- OBS describes dropped frames as a sign of unstable network connectivity or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A network change is relevant to connection symptoms; it does not repair a media source that disappears at file end.
- If connection capacity is the issue, OBS suggests reducing video bitrate based on stable upload speed and the platform’s limits.
Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide for dropped-frame diagnosis and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide for encoder and dashboard checks. Avoid changing bitrate without checking the stream’s resolution, frame rate and connection capacity.

Keep a 24/7 prerecorded stream running: local or cloud
A local OBS setup can play a file or playlist while the computer, power and internet connection remain available. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists cloud options for continuous prerecorded streams, including Gyre, described there as a cloud-based tool. Compare playlist controls, recovery behavior, output quality, storage, stream limits and current terms before choosing a service; verify its features and test lesson transitions before moving a 24/7 channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is an optional YouTube-only service for uploaded videos and playlists, not a camera feed. Its site says you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live; it loops the video in the cloud, so your computer does not need to stay on. StreamNeo says it attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. These are the provider’s claims, not an independently tested diagnosis or guarantee that a particular lesson transition will be fixed.
