A 500 Internal Server Error means the server failed while processing a request, but the status alone does not identify the failed component. Start by recording the exact request and UTC time, then match it to web-server and application logs. The fastest fixes usually come from an unhandled application exception, invalid configuration, unreadable files, exhausted resources, or a stopped/crashed worker process.

What HTTP 500 means
HTTP 500 is a server-side catch-all response. The server received a request but encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from completing the request. MDN defines it as: “The HTTP 500 Internal Server Error server error response status code indicates that the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request.”

That message is an outcome, not a diagnosis. A 500 can be generated by the front-end web server, an application runtime, a database or other upstream dependency, or the host itself. The browser may show only a generic page even when the server logs contain a precise exception and stack trace.
- Application failure: an unhandled exception, syntax or runtime error, failed database call, failed upstream request, or startup/import failure.
- Configuration failure: invalid or unreadable web-server or application settings, a bad rewrite rule, missing environment variable, or an unavailable secret.
- Access failure: the worker account cannot read a file, directory, certificate, socket, or other required resource.
- Resource or process failure: an out-of-memory event, CPU or disk exhaustion, worker crash, or a stopped site or service.
Do not treat every 500 as a code defect, and do not replace the error with a custom page before you have captured the evidence. A friendly error page can conceal the original exception and make correlation harder.

First response: capture the failing request
Before changing code or restarting services, preserve enough detail to find one exact failure in the logs. Record these fields in UTC:
- The complete URL, including the host, path, query string, and scheme.
- The HTTP method, such as GET, POST, PUT, or DELETE.
- The time of the request, preferably with seconds and the timezone explicitly marked as UTC.
- The returned status, response headers, and response body. Keep a copy of any request or correlation identifier.
- The user, deployment, region, or instance affected, if your environment has more than one.
- Whether the failure is reproducible and whether it occurs for every route or only one endpoint.
A request identifier is especially valuable. Some servers include one in the response so an administrator can match the request to access, error, and application logs. Preserve it exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
Reproduce without relying on a browser
Use a direct request so redirects, cached pages, and browser extensions do not obscure the result. For a public GET endpoint, a command-line request can show headers and the response body:
curl -i -v https://example.com/path
For a protected or non-GET endpoint, reproduce the same method, headers, and body that the client used. Never paste production credentials or tokens into a shared ticket. If the request changes data, use a safe test account or a non-production environment where possible.
Define the scope
Test a known healthy route, the failing route, and—if available—the same route on the previous deployment or another instance. This gives you a quick boundary:

| Every route returns 500 | Did the service start correctly, and can it read its configuration and environment? |
| One route or method returns 500 | What exception is raised by that handler and its dependencies? |
| Only one deployment, region, or instance fails | What configuration, permission, build, or resource difference exists there? |
| Only one user or input fails | Can the exact account, payload, authorization, or record be reproduced safely? |
| Intermittent 500 responses | Do failures align with a particular worker, host, dependency, or resource spike? |
Match the request to the right logs
Use the recorded UTC time, host, path, method, and request ID to locate the corresponding web-server access and error entries. Then follow the same identifier—or the closest timestamp and process information—into the application log. Start with the first stack trace, not a later cascade of secondary errors.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Find the access-log line showing the 500 status and confirm that the path and method match.
- Read the web-server error entry immediately before and after that line.
- Search application logs for the same request ID, trace ID, process ID, or timestamp.
- Capture the exception type, message, call stack, and the first failing application frame.
- Check deployment and configuration history for the change closest to the first failure.
Preserve the original stack trace before rotating logs, restarting workers, or deploying a new build. A restart may remove the only evidence of a startup exception or an out-of-memory event. If logs are split across hosts, compare clocks and use UTC consistently; a local-time mismatch can make a correct search appear empty.
Fix application exceptions and failed dependencies
Once the logs identify an application exception, fix that exception rather than handling the 500 response at the edge. Common patterns include:
- An unhandled null, type, validation, or parsing error on a particular input.
- A syntax or runtime error introduced by a deployment.
- A failed database connection, migration, query, or transaction.
- A timeout, authentication failure, or malformed response from an upstream service.
- A missing module, package, file, environment variable, or secret during startup.
Use the stack trace as the boundary
The first application frame that your team owns is usually the best starting point. Verify the values entering that frame, then inspect the immediately preceding dependency call. If a database or upstream service failed, record its error and latency separately; changing the web server will not repair a dependency that is refusing requests.
Separate bad input from a broken handler
Compare a failing payload with a known-valid payload. If only one value triggers the exception, add validation and return the status appropriate to that condition instead of allowing an unhandled exception to become 500. If every payload fails, inspect initialization, routing, dependency injection, and configuration before changing validation code.

Retest the original request
After one targeted code or dependency change, send the same method, URL, headers, and body that produced the error. Confirm both the status and response body, then watch the application log for a recurrence. Testing a different route does not prove that the original failure is fixed.
Validate server and application configuration
A configuration file can be present yet still fail because it is malformed, references an unavailable module, contains an incorrect route rewrite, or cannot be read by the worker account. Check configuration at the layer that reported the error.
- Validate web-server configuration syntax before reloading or restarting.
- Check that the application configuration is readable by the account running the worker process.
- Confirm required environment variables, connection strings, certificates, and secrets exist in the failing environment.
- Review route rewrites, handler mappings, module lists, and virtual paths for the affected endpoint.
- Compare the active configuration with the last known-good deployment, including generated or inherited settings.
Make one reversible change at a time. Save the current configuration, note the exact file and setting changed, and keep a rollback copy. A broad configuration reset can turn a single-route error into an outage across the entire site.
Permissions and ownership
Verify access using the identity that actually runs the web application, not your own administrator account. Check read and execute permission on every directory in the path, read permission on configuration and code files, and access to certificates, temporary directories, sockets, and uploaded files. On systems with mandatory access controls or sandboxing, inspect their denial logs as well.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not solve an access problem by granting everyone write or administrator access. Give the worker identity only the permissions required for the resource, then retest the original request.

Check memory, disk, CPU, and process state
MDN lists out-of-memory conditions as a possible cause of 500 responses. A resource failure may appear as an application exception, a worker crash, or a request that dies before the application can write a useful log entry.
- Review memory pressure and operating-system out-of-memory events around the recorded UTC time.
- Check disk space and inode availability for the operating system, application, log, and temporary-file volumes.
- Look for CPU saturation, process limits, thread exhaustion, and file-descriptor or socket exhaustion.
- Confirm that the web service, site, worker process, and required application service are running.
- Compare the failing instance with a healthy instance to find a resource or process-state difference.
If a worker crashed, capture its crash or termination event before repeatedly restarting it. A restart can restore service temporarily while leaving the leak, runaway request, or bad deployment in place. If capacity is genuinely exhausted, reduce load or scale according to your operating procedure, but continue investigating the event that consumed the resource.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.IIS-specific investigation
Microsoft’s IIS documentation identifies three common causes: an ASP or ASPX page containing a syntax error; web-server or application configuration that cannot be read or is invalid; and a stopped site. The same evidence-first sequence applies, with IIS-specific fields and tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRead IIS status fields
In IIS logs, record sc-status and sc-substatus for the failing request, along with the timestamp, method, URI, host, and any available request identifier. The substatus narrows the IIS failure path beyond the generic 500 shown to a browser.
Use Failed Request Tracing selectively
Failed Request Tracing can capture the sequence of IIS events for a request that meets a chosen status or URL condition. Enable a narrow rule for the affected route, reproduce once, inspect the trace, and disable or narrow the rule when finished. Broad tracing on a busy production site can create excessive log volume and additional disk pressure.
Best Value
Check application and system logs
Look in the application and system event logs for the exception type, message, call stack, worker-process termination, configuration-load error, or site-state change corresponding to the IIS request. If the site is stopped, determine why it stopped before starting it again; an automatic stop may be protecting the host from a repeatedly failing process.
Distinguish 500 from 502 and 503
| Status | Meaning | Investigation focus |
|---|---|---|
| 500 Internal Server Error | The server encountered an unexpected condition while handling the request. | Application exception, invalid configuration, permissions, resources, process state, or a failed dependency surfaced by the application. |
| 502 Bad Gateway | A gateway or proxy received an invalid response from an upstream server. | Upstream availability, protocol response, connection, TLS, timeout, and proxy-to-service configuration. |
| 503 Service Unavailable | The service is not ready to handle the request. | Maintenance, overload, stopped service, health checks, worker capacity, and readiness state. |
A proxy may transform an upstream failure into a different status, so inspect both proxy and origin logs. Do not apply a 502 or 503 runbook to a genuine application-generated 500 without confirming which layer emitted the response.

Choose diagnostics by evidence and risk
| Method | Evidence quality | Layer covered | Production risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser refresh or generic error page | Low; usually only confirms the status | Client-visible response | Safe but not diagnostic |
| Direct request with headers, UTC time, and request ID | Medium to high; creates a reproducible record | Client and web-server boundary | Usually safe; repeat state-changing requests cautiously |
| Access and error logs correlated to an application stack trace | High; identifies the failing layer and code path | Web server and application | Read-only and preferred |
| Configuration and permission validation | High for load and access failures | Web server, application, and host | Read-only checks are safe; edits should be staged and reversible |
| Resource and process inspection | High for OOM, crashes, and exhaustion | Host and worker process | Read-only checks are safe; restarts are disruptive |
| Failed Request Tracing on IIS | High for IIS pipeline failures | IIS request pipeline | Use a narrow rule; disable after capture to limit overhead |
| Restart or rollback | May restore service but does not prove cause | Process or deployment | Disruptive; preserve logs and configuration first |
A safe change-and-retest procedure
- Preserve evidence. Save the request details, response, logs, stack trace, active configuration, and deployment identifier.
- Form one hypothesis. Tie it to a specific exception, configuration line, permission denial, resource event, or process state.
- Make the smallest reversible change. Prefer a code fix, corrected setting, permission adjustment, dependency repair, or rollback over a broad restart.
- Repeat the original request. Use the same URL, method, headers, body, and test identity.
- Verify the result at two layers. Confirm the client status and body, then confirm that the corresponding server and application logs no longer show the failure.
- Watch for recurrence. Keep the relevant logs and resource metrics under observation long enough to catch an intermittent repeat.
- Document the final cause and rollback path. Record what changed, why it fixed the request, and how to reverse it if the error returns.
If the change does not alter the original symptom, revert it before testing another hypothesis. Otherwise, several simultaneous edits can hide the cause and make recovery harder.
When you cannot access the server
If you manage only the website or application and cannot read server logs or configuration, collect the client-side evidence and escalate it to the hosting or operations team. Send the exact URL, method, UTC timestamp, response headers and body, request or correlation ID, affected users or routes, and the last known deployment change. Ask for the matching access-log line, web-server error, application exception, and resource or process events.
Do not repeatedly refresh a state-changing request while waiting for support. Repeated retries can create duplicate records, increase load, or obscure the original timestamp. A support engineer with the request ID and UTC time can usually locate the failure faster than someone working from a screenshot alone.
Prevent recurring 500 errors
- Log structured request IDs, UTC timestamps, route, method, deployment identifier, exception type, and stack trace while excluding passwords, tokens, and personal data.
- Keep web-server access/error logs and application logs searchable together, with synchronized clocks.
- Validate configuration and required environment variables during deployment or startup instead of waiting for the first user request.
- Run migrations and dependency checks as explicit release steps, with a tested rollback.
- Set resource alerts for memory, disk, CPU, process crashes, and worker restarts.
- Use narrowly scoped error tracing for difficult routes and remove or reduce it after diagnosis.
- Return specific client errors for invalid input and handle expected dependency failures deliberately, reserving 500 for unexpected server conditions.
- Test the health of a new deployment before directing all traffic to it, and retain the previous known-good version for rollback.
The durable fix is the one that removes the logged cause and survives a repeat of the original request. A restart, cache clear, or custom error page may change what users see without correcting the failure underneath.
