Work through the matching steps below before replacing hardware or buying a cable.
Identify what is failing
- The player rejects the disc or does not load it: check player and disc compatibility, placement, condition, firmware, and whether other discs work.
- The disc starts, but the TV has no picture or no 4K output: check the TV input, HDMI path, and player video settings.
- An HDR warning appears: confirm the TV’s HDR support; the warning does not necessarily prevent playback.
Disc compatibility and video output settings are separate troubleshooting issues. Panasonic recommends consulting the operating manual for steps specific to your player model: Panasonic operating instructions.

If the player will not load or play the disc
Confirm the player supports Ultra HD Blu-ray
A 4K television does not mean the connected player can read Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Check the player’s model and manual for supported disc formats. Panasonic notes that an “incompatible disc” message can indicate an incompatible disc or one inserted upside down. See Panasonic’s disc error guidance.
Check placement and disc condition
Make sure the disc is inserted with the title side up. Inspect it for smudges, scratches, or other damage. LG recommends wiping smudges with a non-abrasive cloth and replacing a visibly scratched or damaged disc. Its preliminary checks are listed in LG’s disc playback troubleshooting guide.

Restart the player and check for firmware
Unplug the player, reconnect it, and try again. Panasonic advises waiting about 30 seconds before reconnecting power if the player is locked up; LG also recommends restarting as a preliminary check. Then look up the exact model on its manufacturer support page and install any applicable firmware update, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not interrupt an update in progress. Panasonic identifies firmware as one possible factor in playback freezing: Panasonic’s freezing guidance.
Test another disc
Try more than one disc. If possible, test the suspect disc in another Ultra HD Blu-ray-compatible player. If one title fails while others play, focus on that disc or title; if all discs fail after the checks above, the player may need service. Panasonic recommends testing another player when investigating freezing, and its disc error guidance says a player unable to play all discs may require service. HDMI bandwidth is relevant to the video signal path, not the player’s ability to read a disc, so a cable replacement is not the next step for a read failure.

If the disc plays but there is no picture or no 4K output
Check the TV input and HDMI connection
Select the TV input connected to the player and make sure the cable is firmly seated at both ends. Confirm that the cable is plugged into a TV HDMI port that supports the resolution and features you want. Panasonic’s guidance for failed 4K output also recommends checking the selected resolution, cable, connections, and compatible TV input: Panasonic 4K output troubleshooting.

Verify port and cable capabilities
Check the manual for the specific TV input and any receiver or switch in the path. Required support can include HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p, or HDR, depending on the devices and selected output. Panasonic’s DMP-UB900 guidance mentions HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p (4:4:4), and HDR as checks for that model’s setup; these are not a universal checklist for every player.

Cable requirements also depend on the format and equipment. Sony advises users of the player covered by its guidance to connect to a 4K TV with a Premium High Speed or High Speed HDMI cable supporting 18 Gbps for 4K UHD output. Panasonic likewise identifies an 18 Gbps cable for a specified 4K/60p (4:4:4) setting. Check your player and TV manuals before buying a replacement. See Sony’s 4K UHD connection guidance.
Check the player’s video output settings
Open the player’s display or video settings and check the HDMI resolution and 4K output mode. Panasonic names 4K/60p (4:4:4) and 4K/60p (4:2:0) as settings to check, with menu options varying by model. Use the manual for the exact menu path and choose a mode supported by the connected TV and any equipment between the player and TV.

Isolate a receiver or switch
If the player connects through an AV receiver or HDMI switch, temporarily connect it directly to the TV using a compatible HDMI input. If the direct connection works, check the receiver or switch’s ports, settings, and compatibility; if it does not, continue checking the player, TV input, cable, and output settings. This is a diagnostic step to narrow down the signal path, not proof that receivers generally prevent 4K playback.
If an HDR compatibility warning appears
An HDR warning does not always mean the disc cannot play. Panasonic support says that a High Dynamic Range disc can play in non-HDR quality on a TV without HDR capability, even if the message appears. That guidance applies to the DP-UB820, DP-UB9000, and DP-UB420 manuals; check the manual for your exact player and TV combination. See Panasonic’s HDR error-message guidance.

Use the symptom to choose the next step
| Symptom | First checks | What the result indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Disc rejected or will not load | UHD player and disc compatibility, orientation, condition, another disc, restart, and firmware | If only one title fails, investigate that disc or title. If all discs fail after these checks, seek player service. |
| Disc plays, but there is no picture | TV input, cable seating, HDMI port, and player output settings | The issue may be in the signal path or settings rather than disc readability. |
| Picture appears, but not in 4K | 4K-capable TV input, player resolution and output mode, and cable rating | Suitability depends on the selected format and connected devices; verify the exact manuals. |
| HDR warning appears | TV HDR support and HDR settings | Some supported Panasonic combinations can play in non-HDR quality despite the warning. |
