Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChange the thumbnail on the correct broadcast in YouTube Studio: open Create → Go live, select the active stream in Live Control Room, choose Edit, replace the thumbnail in the stream details, and save. The thumbnail is stream metadata, so changing the encoder’s video feed will not fix an incorrect thumbnail.
Change the thumbnail on the correct stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live to reach Live Control Room. Find the broadcast that is currently active. You can also check Studio’s Live content list, taking care not to select a scheduled stream or an old replay.
- Open Edit for that broadcast. Replace the custom thumbnail in its stream details and save the change. YouTube’s stream settings allow metadata edits; the encoder can continue sending video while you make this change. Exact labels can vary by account, so follow the controls shown in your Studio.
- Check that Studio shows the new thumbnail. Then refresh the public watch page or check it again later. YouTube notes that changes may take time to appear publicly, but does not specify a guaranteed delay.
For a stream that has not started yet, open the scheduled event’s details and change its thumbnail before going live. For an active broadcast, make sure you edit the live event itself.

Why the wrong thumbnail appears
The wrong broadcast is selected
A channel may have an upcoming stream, a current broadcast, and past streams or replays. Editing one item does not change another. Confirm the selected item is the live story stream whose watch page is showing the wrong image.
The stream inherited old details
If you created the broadcast with Reuse settings, YouTube copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. That can carry over an earlier thumbnail. Inspect the new event’s details and replace the inherited image before or during the broadcast.

The public page has not updated yet
A saved thumbnail may appear in Studio before it appears on YouTube’s public page. Verify the saved image in Studio, then check the watch page again later; there is no documented fixed propagation time.
The video feed is mistaken for thumbnail metadata
The thumbnail is a separate image attached to the stream details. If the actual video is also wrong, frozen, or failing, that is an encoder or ingestion issue—not a thumbnail edit. Use the Live Control Room stream-health information to diagnose the feed separately.

If YouTube rejects the image
YouTube’s general custom video-thumbnail guidance recommends JPG or PNG in a 16:9 aspect ratio, ideally 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. It lists upload limits of 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails and 50 MB for desktop video thumbnails. These are general video-thumbnail specifications; if the live-stream upload control in your account gives different requirements, follow that control.
Recommended Free Tools
- Export the artwork as JPG or PNG and check its dimensions and file size.
- Use a clear 16:9 image that represents the stream rather than a misleading image.
- Upload it again in the selected broadcast’s details and save.
Keep the thumbnail accurate
YouTube’s thumbnail policy prohibits images that mislead viewers into thinking they will see something that is not in the video. For a 24/7 story or ambience stream, choose artwork that accurately reflects the stream’s actual format and content.

Troubleshooting checklist
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The old thumbnail is still on the watch page | Does Studio show the new image on the correct active broadcast? | If it does, allow time for the public display to update and check again later. |
| A previous stream’s artwork appears | Was Reuse settings used? | Edit the current event’s details and replace the inherited thumbnail. |
| The thumbnail upload fails | File type, aspect ratio, dimensions, and file size | Try JPG or PNG in 16:9 and follow the limits displayed by the live-stream upload control. |
| The image is right, but the stream video is wrong or unhealthy | Live Control Room’s stream-health messages | Troubleshoot the encoder feed, including any reported format, bitrate, or audio/video setting errors. Changing thumbnail metadata will not correct those issues. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 story stream uses uploaded videos, StreamNeo can keep the YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is a hosted streaming option, not a fix for an incorrect YouTube thumbnail; edit the stream’s thumbnail in Studio as described above. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
