How to Fix 403 Forbidden Errors on TTF and OTF Font Files

A 403 font error is an access-policy problem until proven otherwise. This guide shows how to trace the exact TTF or OTF request, distinguish CORS from a real denial, configure Apache or Nginx, verify MIME types, and find CDN, authentication, referrer, or filesystem rules that still block the file.

A 403 on a .ttf or .otf request means the server understood the font request but refused to serve it. Fix it by identifying the exact request, then correcting the rule that denied access: an origin or CORS policy, an authentication or hotlink check, a private CDN or object setting, a path rule, or filesystem access. A browser may also report a CORS error when the underlying response is a redirect or 403, so inspect the network request and server logs instead of changing CSS blindly.

What a 403 means when the file is a font

HTTP status 403 Forbidden is an authorization decision. MDN defines it as a response in which the server understood the request but refused to process it; repeating the same request without changing the conditions normally fails again. See MDN’s 403 Forbidden reference.

For a font, the refusal can happen before the browser examines the font bytes. The web server, reverse proxy, CDN, web application firewall, object-storage gateway, or application may reject the URL. Common decision points include a denied path, a required login, a private object, a signed-URL rule, a referrer or hotlink restriction, or filesystem and directory permissions. A genuine 403 is therefore a deployment or access-policy problem first; changing the @font-face format list alone will not grant access.

Keep two failures separate:

  • Access failure: the font URL actually returns 403 (or is redirected to a URL that returns 403).
  • Browser policy failure: the server returns a response, but a cross-origin font load is blocked because the response does not authorize the page’s origin. The console may emphasize CORS even when the network panel shows a redirect or another status.

That distinction determines whether you need to change server authorization, CORS headers, or both.

Start with the request the browser is really making

Do not diagnose from the CSS filename or a console message alone. Capture the request generated by the page.

  1. Open your browser’s developer tools and select the Network panel. Reload the page with the panel open, then filter for the font extension or the word font.
  2. Open the failing request and record the complete URL, request method, status, every redirect in the chain, response headers, response body, and the initiating page. The URL may differ from the path you typed in CSS because of a relative path, a build step, a CDN prefix, or a redirect.
  3. Test that exact URL with a direct HTTP client. For example, curl -i -L 'https://example.com/assets/fonts/site.woff2' displays response headers and follows redirects; replace the URL with the one shown in developer tools. Compare the command’s result with the browser’s result.
  4. Correlate the timestamp and path with the origin web-server log, reverse-proxy log, CDN or WAF log, and application log that handled the request. The component that wrote the refusal usually identifies the matching rule.

If the direct request receives 403, the server-side policy is the primary fault. If the direct request succeeds but the browser blocks the font, investigate origin and CORS conditions. If the first response is a redirect, inspect every destination rather than fixing only the original URL.

Separate origin, scheme, and CORS problems

Web fonts are a documented CORS use case when a stylesheet on one origin requests a font from another. MDN’s CORS guide explains that the font server must opt in by returning an appropriate Access-Control-Allow-Origin response header.

Comparison What to check What the result tells you
Same-origin versus cross-origin Compare scheme, hostname, and port of the page with those of the font URL. A different origin requires the font response to authorize the page origin with CORS.
HTTPS versus file:// Check how the page was opened during local testing. A local file can have an opaque origin, producing a CORS error even though the deployed HTTP page behaves differently.
Direct origin versus CDN or proxy Request the origin URL and the public URL separately, where your setup permits. A CDN, WAF, or proxy may apply a different access rule or omit headers.
Network status versus console wording Read the status, redirect chain, and response headers in the network panel. The console’s CORS wording can describe the browser’s interpretation, not the rule that generated a 403.

When testing a local page, serve it through an HTTP development server instead of opening the HTML with file://. MDN documents this case in CORS request not HTTP and advises using HTTPS URLs for CORS requests, including web-font requests. A local HTTP server gives the page a real origin and makes the test comparable to deployment.

Allow the requesting origin when the font is cross-origin

Once the font is reachable, add a response header on the server that serves the font. Replace the example origin below with the exact scheme, host, and (when applicable) port of the site containing the stylesheet.

Apache

In a permitted Apache configuration scope, add:

Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin 'https://example.com'

The directive may belong in the virtual-host configuration or in .htaccess when that directory is allowed to set headers. Ensure the module and configuration scope are active, reload Apache using your normal operational procedure, and request the public font URL again. MDN discusses the missing-header failure in CORS missing Access-Control-Allow-Origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nginx

In the applicable server or location configuration, add:

add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' 'https://example.com' always;

Nginx has no .htaccess equivalent. Header and MIME changes must be made in the main Nginx configuration, followed by the service’s normal configuration test and reload. The always parameter makes the header available on responses where Nginx otherwise might omit it; confirm the resulting header on the actual font URL.

Choose the origin and credential policy deliberately

Use the real site origin rather than copying the placeholder. If several known sites consume the font, configure an allowlist or an origin-reflecting policy appropriate to your server instead of exposing every origin by accident. If cookies or other credentials are involved, align the CORS credential settings with the server’s policy; an origin header by itself does not make credentialed requests valid. When another party hosts the font and does not send the required header, only that host’s operator can change its response. Your alternatives are to obtain permission, use a host you control, or serve a properly licensed copy from your own origin.

Verify that the URL resolves to the intended font

A browser requests the URL emitted by @font-face, not the filename you expect to exist. Check the complete declaration and the final request together:

@font-face {
  font-family: 'Site Font';
  src: url('/assets/fonts/site-regular.ttf') format('truetype');
  font-weight: 400;
  font-style: normal;
}

Confirm that the path, filename, capitalization, URL encoding, and deployment directory match the file that was uploaded. A relative URL can resolve against a different stylesheet directory than you intended. If a reverse proxy or CDN rewrites paths, verify the public URL rather than only the origin filesystem path. Follow redirects in the network panel and in a direct request; a redirect to a login page, a different host, or a blocked directory can turn an apparently correct declaration into a 403.

Do not “fix” a denied request by opening an entire directory. Grant access to the font asset through the narrowest location rule that fits your stack, while keeping directory listings and unrelated private files protected.

Check the font’s MIME type after access is fixed

Access and format are separate checks. MDN’s MIME types guide lists font/ttf and font/otf as common media types and notes that browsers use the response’s Content-Type, not merely the filename extension. A wrong type can produce a loading failure after you have removed the 403.

File Expected media type What to verify
TrueType Font (.ttf) font/ttf The response for the public URL carries this value in Content-Type.
OpenType Font (.otf) font/otf The response for the public URL carries this value in Content-Type.

Use the response headers in developer tools or your HTTP client to inspect the value. If it is missing or generic, configure MIME mappings in the server that actually answers the public request. Apache can use server configuration or an allowed .htaccess; Nginx requires its main configuration because it does not read .htaccess. After changing the mapping, reload the service through your normal procedure and retest the exact URL. For reference, MDN explains server-side MIME configuration at Configuring server MIME types.

Find the policy layer that still returns 403

If the status remains 403 after the URL and CORS checks, inspect each layer in the path from browser to file. A log entry is more reliable than guessing from the filename.

Virtual-host and location matching

Apache virtual hosts and Nginx server/location blocks can select different rules based on hostname and path. A font may work on the origin hostname but fail on the public hostname because the request lands in another block. Confirm which configuration handled the host and path, then place the allow rule, header, and MIME mapping in that matching scope.

CDN, reverse proxy, and WAF rules

A proxy can deny a file before the origin sees it, cache an old 403, strip CORS headers, or forward a different host and path. Check the edge response headers and the proxy log, then compare with an origin request when possible. Correct the edge rule or cache state and verify the public URL again; changing only the origin will not help if the edge still refuses the request.

Private objects and signed URLs

Object storage and media gateways commonly distinguish public assets from private objects. A font URL that requires a valid signed URL, token, or time window can return 403 after deployment or from a cached page. Confirm the object’s visibility and the URL’s expiration and signature requirements. Publish the font through the intended public policy or generate valid URLs through the application; do not expose a private bucket merely to make a font load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication and application authorization

If the request is redirected to a login endpoint or an application returns 403, check session requirements, access-control middleware, and route permissions. Fonts requested by anonymous visitors must be permitted for anonymous access, or the page must obtain the required authorization before requesting them. The response body and application log often reveal this case more clearly than the browser console.

Referrer and hotlink restrictions

Hotlink protection may reject a font when the page’s referrer is absent, differs from the allowlist, or is the domain of a staging site. Inspect the request’s referrer-related headers and the rule’s match in the edge or origin log. Update the allowlist for every legitimate site that embeds the font, or remove the restriction if it is not appropriate. Test both your production hostname and any staging hostname separately.

Filesystem and directory access

The web-service account needs permission to traverse the parent directories and read the font file. A deny rule on a parent directory can yield 403 even when the file itself appears readable. Check the operating system permissions and the server’s directory access directives without granting broader permissions than necessary. Retest through the web URL, because a shell-level file check does not prove that the configured virtual host can serve it.

Why a font works locally but fails after deployment

Local success often exercises a different origin, scheme, server, and policy set. A development server may serve the file directly while production places it behind a CDN or authentication layer. A local stylesheet may resolve a relative path correctly while the deployed stylesheet lives in another directory. Opening a local page with file:// also creates the opaque-origin CORS condition described by MDN, so that test is not equivalent to an HTTP deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reproduce the production path deliberately: serve the page over HTTP(S), use the same hostname pattern and font URL form, and inspect the public response headers. Then compare the working and failing requests along the four axes below:

  • Origin: same host versus a separate font host.
  • Scheme: HTTP(S) versus file://.
  • Serving path: direct origin versus CDN or reverse proxy.
  • Observed result: actual status and headers versus the browser’s interpreted error.

This comparison narrows the change to authorization, CORS, origin handling, or MIME configuration instead of treating every console message as a font-format problem.

An end-to-end repair sequence

Use this order so that each step answers a different question and later checks are not masked by an earlier failure.

  1. Capture the public request. Record the exact URL, status, redirects, headers, response body, and initiating page in developer tools.
  2. Request the URL directly. Determine whether the server, rather than only the browser, returns 403.
  3. Identify the responding layer. Use timestamps and paths to match the request in origin, proxy, CDN/WAF, and application logs.
  4. Validate the URL and deployment path. Correct relative paths, capitalization, rewrites, and redirects so the request reaches the intended font.
  5. Resolve authorization. Adjust the matching virtual-host or location rule, authentication, private-object, signed-URL, referrer, hotlink, or filesystem policy that denied the asset.
  6. Resolve cross-origin access. If the page and font have different origins, return Access-Control-Allow-Origin for the real page origin. Apply the Apache or Nginx configuration in the component that serves the public response.
  7. Check the media type. Confirm font/ttf for TTF and font/otf for OTF, then reload the relevant service.
  8. Retest without stale intermediaries. Request the exact public URL again and verify status, redirects, CORS header, and Content-Type in the same response.

Final verification checklist

  • The URL in @font-face exactly matches the deployed public path.
  • The request is not redirected to a blocked host, login page, or private endpoint.
  • The component that answered the request is identified in logs.
  • The response status is no longer 403.
  • A cross-origin response includes an Access-Control-Allow-Origin value matching the page’s origin.
  • The test page is served over HTTP(S), not opened with file://.
  • The response uses font/ttf or font/otf for the corresponding file.
  • CDN, proxy, WAF, object-storage, authentication, referrer, and filesystem policies allow the intended public request.
  • The browser network panel shows the font request completing and the page applies the expected face, weight, and style.

Once the public request is authorized, correctly identified, CORS-compatible where necessary, and served with the right MIME type, a 403 font error has been resolved at its cause rather than hidden with a CSS workaround.
