Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your 3CX Windows Softphone has no sound, cannot send your voice, or will not connect, start by checking the app’s phone mode and its selected audio devices. If the call connects but audio is missing or one-way—or remote calls fail—the cause may be PBX permissions or network configuration, which your administrator should investigate.
Start with phone mode and audio device selection
When you intend to make calls through a PC headset, confirm that 3CX is in Softphone mode. In CTI mode, the app controls a desk phone instead, so changing the PC headset may not address the call audio.

- Open the 3CX Windows app menu and choose Audio Options.
- Under Audio Devices, select the intended headset or device for Microphone, Speaker, and Ringing. Choose each separately; the ringer can use PC speakers while calls use a headset.
- Make a test call and check whether the problem is with incoming sound, your microphone, or call connection.
These are 3CX’s end-user steps for sound or voice-transmission problems. If you still cannot make or receive calls, 3CX advises consulting your administrator (Simple Troubleshooting of the 3CX Apps).
If you cannot hear the other person
In Audio Options, check the selected Speaker device and confirm that the intended playback device is available to Windows. If you use a headset, select it as the speaker. Also check Ringing separately: a ring playing through PC speakers does not mean call audio is routed there.

- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
If the correct device is selected but audio is still absent, note whether it affects every call or only calls from a particular location or route. A call that connects with no sound can indicate a network or PBX-side audio issue rather than a Windows speaker-selection problem.
If the other person cannot hear you
Open Audio Options and select the intended headset or microphone under Microphone. If the selected device is not the one you are speaking into, the other party may hear nothing even when you can hear them. Confirm that the app is in Softphone mode when you expect it to use the PC headset.
For a Jabra headset, 3CX’s setup guidance says to install Jabra Direct, connect the headset, then choose it in Settings > Audio/Video > Headset integration and connect it. Select the Jabra device as the microphone and speaker in 3CX; choose a separate device for ringing if desired. Volume and mute controls depend on the capabilities of the specific headset model (3CX Jabra headset integration, updated 4 June 2026).

If a call connects but audio is missing or one-way
When local microphone and speaker selections are correct, a connected call with no audio in one or both directions may involve PBX or network configuration. Tell your administrator whether the issue occurs on internal calls, outside calls, or only when working remotely. That distinction can help narrow where to investigate; it does not by itself identify the cause.
For remote use, the extension must be allowed to connect remotely. 3CX tells end users not to change advanced settings themselves; ask the PBX administrator to check the extension’s remote-connection rights and the deployment’s configuration (3CX end-user troubleshooting guidance).
For on-premise deployments, 3CX’s firewall guide lists these inbound PBX/network requirements. They are not instructions to open ports on an individual Windows PC; the administrator must verify what applies to the organization’s 3CX release and topology.

| Traffic | Ports listed by 3CX for on-premise firewall configuration | Purpose described in the guide |
|---|---|---|
| SIP | UDP 5060; TCP 5060–5061 | Signaling |
| RTP | UDP 9000–10999 inbound | Audio between the PBX and provider/trunk; the guide says two RTP ports are required per simultaneous call for this path |
| Remote-app tunnel | UDP/TCP 5090 inbound | 3CX remote-app tunnel |
| Presence and provisioning for remote apps | TCP 443 or 5001 inbound, or the configured HTTPS port | Remote-app presence and provisioning |
These values come from 3CX’s Firewall & Router Configuration, last updated 25 September 2026, and are scoped to its on-premise firewall guidance. The required setup depends on how the PBX is deployed.
3CX’s Firewall Checker guidance discusses UDP port forwarding and port preservation, disabling SIP ALG, reviewing forwarding rules, and inspecting firewall logs. It recommends running the checker after firewall configuration. Do not disable a firewall broadly as a routine test: the Windows firewall testing note in that guidance concerns analysis on the 3CX server (3CX Firewall Checker).
If calls will not connect, especially when you are remote
First identify whether the failure affects incoming calls, outgoing calls, or both, and whether it happens only away from the office. Then contact your administrator. A remote extension may need remote-connection permission, and network or PBX settings may need attention. 3CX specifically advises end users not to change advanced settings on their own.

If other calls work but calls to or from outside the organization fail, share that detail with the administrator. The relevant checks can differ from those for internal calls, and the on-premise port list above should not be applied blindly to a hosted or differently configured system.

Use these checks only if the problem is app startup or termination, not as general audio fixes. 3CX’s startup troubleshooting page is diagnosis- and Windows-version-specific; follow the matching error evidence and your organization’s IT policy before changing Windows components (3CX Windows Softphone issues, updated 28 July 2026).

The app starts in the background
3CX’s documented case calls for checking the app log for a specific FileNotFoundException involving Windows.Media.Playback.MediaPlayer. For that matched error, the article describes enabling Windows Media Features and Windows Media Player Legacy, restarting Windows, and using a PowerShell capability command if needed. Do not run those steps simply because a call has no sound; match the log evidence first.

The app closes immediately
For immediate termination, the 3CX article describes checking the AppxDeploymentServer event log for a particular Windows App Runtime Singleton failure pattern. It then directs users to match the installed app package version to the corresponding Windows App SDK runtime. Because these are version-dependent system changes, have IT verify the exact error and runtime requirement rather than installing or changing components by guesswork.
When to involve your administrator
- Audio device and Softphone-mode checks do not resolve the issue.
- A call connects but audio is absent or one-way.
- Calls fail only remotely, only externally, or for a particular extension.
- A proposed fix involves extension rights, PBX settings, firewall rules, ports, Windows components, or organization-managed software.
When reporting the problem, include what works and what fails: incoming versus outgoing calls, internal versus outside calls, office versus remote use, and whether you can hear the other party or they can hear you. This gives the administrator useful context without changing network settings yourself.
