The difference comes down to how each value scales an image to fit a box.
How the three sizing choices work
Let the source image measure Iw × Ih and the frame measure Bw × Bh. With contain and cover, the image is scaled uniformly, so its aspect ratio stays intact. With fill, its width and height are adjusted independently, which can change that ratio.

Contain: show the whole image
contain uses the smaller of the width and height scale factors: min(Bw/Iw, Bh/Ih). That makes the image as large as possible without exceeding either frame dimension. If the image and frame have different aspect ratios, some of the frame remains uncovered. The CSS Images specification defines this as the largest rectangle at the image’s natural aspect ratio that fits within the constraint rectangle (CSS Images Module Level 3).

Cover: fill the frame, accepting a crop
cover uses the larger scale factor: max(Bw/Iw, Bh/Ih). The image becomes large enough to cover the whole frame, preserving its proportions, but some overflow is clipped when the ratios differ. This is useful for cards or hero images where an empty frame would be undesirable, provided the cropped area does not hide important content.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Fill: match both frame dimensions
fill sizes the content to the frame’s width and height, effectively using separate scale factors, Bw/Iw and Bh/Ih. If they differ, the image is stretched or squashed. The source and frame can match perfectly without distortion if their aspect ratios are already the same. fill is the initial value of object-fit.
A worked square-frame example
For a 1200 × 800 landscape image in a 300 × 300 square frame, contain renders the image at 300 × 200, leaving 100 pixels of vertical space in total. cover renders it at 450 × 300, clipping 150 pixels of width in total if centered. fill renders it at 300 × 300, distorting its proportions. These are calculations from the scaling rules; the centered crop assumes the default centered position.

Choose based on what must remain visible
- Use
coverfor thumbnails, cards, and hero media when a full frame matters more than showing every edge. Check the crop at each responsive size, particularly around faces, text, logos, and other edge-sensitive content. - Use
containfor diagrams, product images, screenshots, or logos when all edges matter. A deliberate background color can make the unused frame area look intentional. - Use
fillonly when exact frame dimensions matter more than natural proportions, or when the image and frame already share an aspect ratio.
Set up a fixed-ratio image frame
Give the frame a size or aspect ratio, then make the image occupy it and choose how the content should fit:

Replace cover with contain or fill to change the behavior. With cover, overflow: hidden on the frame clips the part extending past its box.

Control which part of the image appears
object-position moves the rendered image within its frame. Its initial position is centered. For example, object-position: 50% 30% favors an area nearer the top, while object-position: right bottom aligns the image to the lower-right. With cover, positioning controls which area is lost to cropping; with contain, it controls where the unused space falls (MDN: object-fit).
Understand what object-fit does—and does not do
object-fit controls how replaced content, such as an <img> or <video>, is drawn inside the element’s content box. It does not set the element’s layout dimensions; those come from its width, height, and other sizing rules. MDN notes that object-fit has no effect on <iframe>, <embed>, or <fencedframe>. For a CSS background image, use background-size: cover or background-size: contain instead (MDN: Styling replaced elements).

A cover crop changes the rendered view, not the source file: the image element clips overflow inside its box. To create a smaller cropped derivative for delivery, use a separate image-processing or content-management step.

Avoid accidental distortion in responsive layouts
Images have intrinsic dimensions and usually an intrinsic aspect ratio. When only one CSS dimension is set, the other can follow that ratio. Setting both width and height to values with a different ratio can distort an image when it is filled into those dimensions. The aspect-ratio property expresses a preferred ratio, but it does not override two explicitly set dimensions (MDN: Understanding and setting aspect ratios).
When an image should remain in its natural proportions and does not need a fixed crop frame, use max-width: 100%; height: auto;. For fixed-ratio cards, define the frame ratio and select object-fit deliberately. Keep the image’s alt text appropriate to its purpose: cropping the visual does not make meaningful information dispensable from its text alternative.
Browser support
MDN marks object-fit as Baseline Widely available and says it has been available across browsers since January 2020. Its reference page was last modified July 21, 2026 (MDN: object-fit). Check target-browser support separately if you rely on newer image features beyond the established values described here.
