How to Fish is a Windows PC game on Steam, released by Dazed Games on August 20, 2026. The official announcements page lists updates through September 29, 2026, including patch 1.1.3. Let any Steam download finish, restart Steam, and restart the PC before testing again. The September 1 patch 1.0.11 announcement says that update focused mainly on stability and platform support and asks players to restart Steam to receive it; it does not identify a black-screen fix. Check the minimum requirements
Compare your system with the game’s Steam listing before concluding that hardware needs replacing. Its published minimum requirements are:
- 64-bit processor and operating system, with Windows 10 or newer.
- Intel Core i5-5257U, AMD Ryzen 3 1200, or equivalent processor.
- 8 GB RAM.
- GeForce GTX 1050, AMD RX 460, or equivalent graphics card.
- Broadband internet and 1 GB of available storage.
The store page does not give a detailed recommended configuration beyond a 64-bit processor and operating system. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that every launch configuration will work; Steam notes that computers at or near minimum requirements can still have launch or performance problems. Check the game’s Steam listing.

Verify the installation and update software
Verify the game files in Steam
In Steam, open your Library, right-click How to Fish, choose Properties, then Installed Files and Verify integrity of game files. Steam will check the installation and replace files it identifies as missing or damaged. Wait for the process to finish, then try launching again. Steam recommends file verification as a general launch troubleshooting step; it is not a diagnosis of this game’s particular build. See Steam’s general launch troubleshooting.
Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install available Windows updates and the current graphics driver provided for your GPU, then restart the PC and test the game. Steam’s general launch guidance includes updating Windows and computer drivers. If you recently changed a driver and the problem began afterward, record that timing for your report rather than making several additional changes at once.

Close nonessential software temporarily
Exit nonessential applications that might interfere with Steam or game startup, then test once more. Steam lists conflicting software as a possible general launch issue. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic check; do not permanently remove or disable security software just to try to launch the game.

Steam says the game is already running
This is distinct from a black screen alone. Open Task Manager and look for a How to Fish process that remains after the failed launch. If one is hung, end that process and try starting the game again. Steam associates the “app already running” message with an improperly closed silent crash or a game that did not launch correctly. Read Steam’s guidance for a game that appears to be running.

Steam reports a missing executable
Check your security software’s quarantine and then verify the game files in Steam. Steam warns that antivirus software can mistakenly quarantine game files. Restore a quarantined file only if your security product and trusted Steam installation indicate it is a false positive; do not bypass a security warning without checking it. If you open a Steam support ticket for a missing executable, Steam asks for an uncropped screenshot and a System Report. See Steam’s missing-executable guidance.
The screen is black or gray, with no specific Steam error
If the game does not show an explicit missing-file error and Steam does not say it is already running, continue with the update, requirements, file-verification, driver, and software checks above. The game-specific community discussion uses descriptions such as “black screen when starting,” “gray screen,” and being unable to launch through Steam. Optional: test administrator mode, then undo it if it does not help
One player in the game-specific discussion reported success after enabling Run this program as administrator for the game executable; another said it did not work, and other replies describe mixed outcomes. This is an anecdotal, reversible test—not a requirement or a confirmed fix.

- In Steam, open the game’s Properties and find the installed game files using the relevant option on the Installed Files page.
- In File Explorer, right-click the game executable and choose Properties, then open the Compatibility tab.
- If the option is available, select Run this program as an administrator, apply the change, and test the game.
- If it makes no difference or causes another problem, return to the same Compatibility tab, clear the checkbox, and apply the change.
Because community outcomes conflict, do not assume administrator mode is necessary. Avoid treating compatibility modes, disabling full-screen optimization, editing configuration files, or third-party repair utilities as established fixes for How to Fish.
What to include when you ask for help
A precise report makes it easier for other players or support staff to distinguish a display problem from a process hang or missing file. Include:
- The exact symptom: black screen, gray screen, no window, audio with no image, or the precise Steam error.
- Whether the game process stays open and whether Steam says it is running.
- Your Windows version, CPU, GPU, and installed RAM.
- The game version, or confirmation that Steam finished updating it.
- When the issue began, including whether it followed an update and whether it happens on every launch.
- Each troubleshooting step you tried and what changed afterward.
- A screenshot when it helps show the error or screen; for a Steam missing-executable support ticket, include an uncropped screenshot and a System Report as Steam requests.
There is no established published frequency or success rate for How to Fish black screens. Steam Support notes that games may fail to launch for many reasons and that diagnosis is difficult across different hardware and software configurations.
