The safest way to keep progress in a long SNES game depends on how you play: use the game’s own save on an original cartridge or in Snes9x, and treat save states or Super NES Classic suspend points as separate snapshots that can roll progress backward. Before continuing, identify your setup and make an independent backup wherever possible.
First, identify where your progress is stored
| How you play | Where progress lives | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Original SNES cartridge | For a game that supports saving, the cartridge may use battery-backed SRAM. | A failing battery or cartridge fault can put the save at risk. Check the board before attempting repair. Snes9x documentation discusses cartridge saves; iFixit’s cartridge battery guide describes repair considerations. |
| Snes9x emulator | The game’s in-game save is stored as an SRAM file, typically with the .srm extension. A save state stores a broader snapshot. |
Loading an older state can restore the SRAM data captured with that state, replacing newer in-game save data. Snes9x documentation explains the distinction. |
| Super NES Classic Edition | The game has its in-game save, and the console can keep suspend points in slots. | A temporary suspend point is deleted if you shut off the console or start another game without saving that point to a slot. Resuming a suspend point can also overwrite the in-game save. Nintendo explains how to save a suspend point and warns about resuming one. |
Original SNES cartridge: use the game’s save and protect the cartridge
Use the save points or save menu built into the game. Let the save operation finish before turning off the console. To confirm that a save is persisting, restart the game later and check whether the saved progress is still available.

If saves begin disappearing, preserve any remaining progress before opening the cartridge. A battery-backed save can fail because of a weak battery or a cartridge fault; replacing parts without checking the board is not a reliable first step. The iFixit guide says the battery is usually a CR2032, but that is not guaranteed for every cartridge. Opening an SNES cartridge typically requires a 3.8 mm Gamebit screwdriver bit, and battery replacement involves soldering. Confirm the actual board and cell before buying parts or attempting repair. See iFixit’s battery replacement guide and its guide to opening an SNES cartridge.

Snes9x: keep the SRAM save separate from save states
Make the game’s own save in-game so Snes9x writes the SRAM file, typically .srm. Then make a separate copy of that file as a backup. Keep that backup distinct from save-state files: the two preserve different things.

A save state can return you to an arbitrary moment, including just before a difficult section. As the Snes9x documentation puts it, snapshotting saves “the whole game state anywhere you want, beyond the game designers’ intent.” That convenience has a trade-off: loading an old state can also restore the SRAM contents captured when the state was made, wiping out a newer in-game save. Read the Snes9x documentation.
- Save through the game’s own menu or save point.
- Make a separate backup copy of the game’s
.srmfile. - Use a save state when useful, but do not treat it as a backup of the newest in-game save.
- After loading a state, check the game’s in-game save before continuing. If you use a different Snes9x port or version, its menus and file-handling details may differ.
Super NES Classic Edition: save temporary suspend points to slots
Sliding the Reset switch up while playing creates a temporary suspend point. It is not saved automatically. Move the point into a saved slot and press Y to keep it. The Super NES Classic Edition supports up to four saved suspend points per game. Nintendo’s instructions show the suspend-point steps.

Do not shut down the console or start another game while the point is still temporary: Nintendo says it will be deleted. Also, a suspend point and the game’s in-game save are separate versions of progress. Nintendo warns that resuming a suspend point may overwrite the in-game save, and that overwritten data cannot be recovered. Before resuming, consider which version is newer and whether you need the in-game save. Read Nintendo’s warning about resuming suspend points.

A simple routine for a long playthrough
- Save in the game first. Use the title’s intended save feature whenever it is available.
- Keep a second copy when your platform allows it. For Snes9x, back up the
.srmfile independently of save states. - Before loading a snapshot, check its age. An older emulator state or Classic suspend point may contain older progress and replace newer in-game data.
- On original hardware, verify persistence. Check that the save remains after a later restart; if it does not, protect any remaining data and identify the cartridge board before repair.
