To find YouTube channels matching a phrase, call YouTube Data API v3’s search.list endpoint with type=channel, then read the JSON response. This is API-based retrieval—not scraping YouTube page HTML—and it requires a Google Cloud project with the YouTube Data API v3 enabled. A public-content search can use an API key; OAuth is for operations or data that require user authorization.

Google’s sample requests demonstrate an API-key request for public content. Keep the key out of public client-side code where possible; this is a security practice, not a special API requirement. An API key does not provide access to private channel information.
#1 Best Overall
Search for channels with a simple API request
Send a GET request to https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/search. The essential parameters are part=snippet, type=channel, and q set to the search phrase. For example, substitute an encoded phrase and your key in this request pattern:
https://www.googleapis.com/youtube/v3/search?part=snippet&type=channel&q=YOUR_SEARCH_PHRASE&maxResults=25&key=YOUR_API_KEY
Encode the query phrase as a URL parameter when building the request in code. The type=channel parameter limits results to channels; without it, search can return videos, channels, and playlists. Google’s sample illustrates the filter directly: “If you’d rather find soccer channels, just change the type parameter.”
Rank #2
maxResults controls the page size. Google’s method documentation sets its maximum at 50; a request may still return fewer items than requested.

The response contains an items array of search-result objects. For each channel match, use id.channelId as the channel identifier. The result’s snippet contains basic display information, including the title and description. See Google’s Search resource reference for the result structure.
A search result is not a complete or persistent channel resource. If the application needs more channel fields, use the channel ID to make a separate channels.list request and select the resource parts it needs, such as snippet or contentDetails. Channels: list documents that lookup.
| Task | Method | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Find channels matching a phrase | search.list with type=channel |
Query-based discovery; returns search-result IDs and basic snippets, with pagination. |
| Get fuller details for known channel IDs | channels.list |
Looks up channel resources by ID and requested parts; it is a follow-up lookup, not text search. |
Get another page of results
Check the response for nextPageToken. If it is present, make another search.list request with that value as pageToken, retaining the other search parameters. Each page is a new API request. Do not treat pageInfo.totalResults as an exact count: Google’s search documentation describes it as approximate. The page token, rather than an assumed page size or total, indicates whether another page is available.

Understand API keys, OAuth, and quota
When an API key is enough
For public channel search, an API key is generally sufficient; Google’s sample uses one. OAuth is not automatically required just because the request searches YouTube. Operations involving private data or actions on behalf of an authenticated user may require OAuth, and a key does not unlock private information. See the API overview and setup guide.

As documented by Google for Developers and checked on 4 October 2026, the default quota allocation is 100 search.list calls per day, and each search request costs one quota unit. These are current documented defaults, not a guarantee that Google will keep them unchanged. A request for another page is another call. Quotas are managed per project; Google describes an audit process for projects seeking quota beyond the default. Consult the Quota Calculator and Quota and Compliance Audits guidance for current details.
What this search does—and does not—establish
The API gives an application structured channel matches for a query, not a guarantee of every channel that could be relevant. Google does not establish a completeness or ranking guarantee in the cited search documentation, so test query phrasing and result handling against the needs of your application. For endpoint parameters and response behavior, use the official Search: list reference.
