What the motherboard fields mean
| Windows field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| BaseBoard Manufacturer | The motherboard or system-board maker. |
| BaseBoard Product | Usually the board model or product identifier. |
| BaseBoard Version | The revision or version reported by firmware, when available. |
| Serial Number | The board serial number, if the firmware exposes it. |
For driver, manual, and BIOS searches, use BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product together. Include the version or revision when the manufacturer lists separate firmware for different board revisions. Windows obtains these values through the Win32_BaseBoard class, which Microsoft documents as the baseboard, motherboard, or system-board information source (Microsoft documentation).
Method 1: Use System Information
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
msinfo32and press Enter. - Leave System Summary selected in the left pane.
- In the right pane, find BaseBoard Manufacturer, BaseBoard Product, and BaseBoard Version.
- Copy the values into a note before searching for support files.
A custom PC might show a manufacturer such as ASUS and a product such as a ROG STRIX model, but labels and values vary by firmware and computer. If msinfo32 does not open, search Start for System Information, or run msinfo32.exe from PowerShell or Command Prompt.
Why this is usually the best option
System Information is built into Windows, uses a graphical interface, and normally needs no administrator access for this read-only lookup. It is also less dependent on optional command-line components than older guides.

Method 2: Use PowerShell
PowerShell is useful when you want clean, copyable output or need to collect the value in a script. Open Start, search for PowerShell or Windows Terminal, open it, and run:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BaseBoard |
Select-Object Manufacturer, Product, Version, SerialNumber
For a compact manufacturer-and-model result, run:
Get-CimInstance Win32_BaseBoard |
Select-Object Manufacturer, Product
Get-CimInstance retrieves WMI/CIM objects in PowerShell; Microsoft documents both the command and the Win32_BaseBoard class (Get-CimInstance documentation).
Method 3: Use WMIC only as a legacy fallback
Some older instructions use WMIC, but Microsoft has deprecated the WMIC command-line utility and is replacing it with PowerShell/CIM commands. WMI itself is not deprecated. Availability therefore depends on the Windows installation and release.

If Windows says wmic is not recognized, use msinfo32 or the PowerShell command instead. See Microsoft’s WMIC documentation and deprecated-features list.
When the result is blank, generic, or wrong
Firmware information is only as accurate as the data entered by the computer manufacturer. OEM systems may show an internal board code, the computer model, To be filled by O.E.M., or another generic string instead of a retail motherboard name (Microsoft computer-information guidance).
- Run the PowerShell query even if System Information was incomplete.
- Record the computer’s complete model, BIOS version/date, BaseBoard values, and serial number when present.
- Restart and enter BIOS/UEFI using the manufacturer’s documented key, commonly Delete, F2, F10, or Esc. Check pages named Main, System Information, or Board Information.
- For a desktop, shut down, switch off and unplug the power supply, ground yourself, and inspect printed markings near the PCIe slots, memory slots, or CPU socket.
- If built-in data remains insufficient, use a reputable hardware-information utility and compare its result with the manufacturer’s documentation.
On laptops and branded desktops, the visible identifier may be an OEM part number rather than a separately sold retail motherboard. The exact computer model and official service page are often more useful than a generic board string.

Verify the model before updating BIOS or buying hardware
Identification is only the first step. Before downloading firmware or checking CPU, memory, storage, or PCIe compatibility:
- Match the exact model name, including suffixes and regional or OEM variants.
- Check the board revision when one is listed.
- Use the manufacturer’s official support page, compatibility list, and BIOS release notes.
- Confirm the required CPU generation, memory type, and minimum BIOS version.
- Read the recovery instructions and keep power stable during a firmware update.
A similar-looking model can use different firmware. Never treat the motherboard name alone as proof that a component or BIOS file is compatible.
Checking outside Windows
BIOS or UEFI
Use the manufacturer’s documented startup key and firmware menus when Windows will not boot or software values are unreliable. Menu names and keys differ by manufacturer.

Physical inspection
Desktop boards commonly print the model near expansion slots, memory sockets, or the CPU socket. Disconnect power and avoid touching components unnecessarily. For a laptop, do not assume an internal board code corresponds to a retail motherboard model.
Manufacturer model label
For OEM computers, the chassis label, original documentation, BIOS screen, or Windows System Information may identify the complete PC model. Search that model on the manufacturer’s support site.

Redact the serial number, service tag, and asset tag before posting screenshots or command output publicly. The manufacturer and model are normally sufficient for general compatibility questions; serial numbers are mainly needed for warranty or direct support.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to check a motherboard model in Windows 11?
Press Windows + R, run msinfo32, and read BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product under System Summary.
Can Device Manager show the motherboard model?
Usually not reliably. System Information, PowerShell, BIOS/UEFI, or the computer manufacturer’s support page are better sources.
Why does BaseBoard Product say “To be filled by O.E.M.”?
The firmware supplied an incomplete or generic value. Use the PowerShell query, BIOS/UEFI, the complete PC model, or a physical inspection to find a dependable identifier.
Does the motherboard model alone tell me which RAM or CPU to buy?
No. Verify board revision, BIOS support, CPU generation, memory type, capacity limits, and the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation.
