The best Android TV app depends on what you want to do: watch on-demand video, find free channels, play files from a computer, move files to the television, or stream PC games. This refreshed list replaces the original 2024 one-size-fits-all ranking with ten practical choices for Android TV and Google TV.
Android TV is Google’s television operating-system platform; Google TV is a newer interface built on Android TV OS. They share much of the app ecosystem, but a listing can still vary by television model, certification, country, language and developer support. Google explains those availability limits in its Google TV help documentation.

“Free” here means the installation or basic service is free; it does not mean every program, rental, feature or channel costs nothing.
The ten best choices by use case
1. YouTube — best overall free video
YouTube is the most useful first install for most households: news, tutorials, music, creator channels, rentals and paid subscriptions all use a remote-friendly television interface. It is often preinstalled, so check the Apps row before downloading.

- Strengths: enormous free catalog, voice search, profiles and casting from a phone.
- Trade-offs: advertising, account-based recommendations and region-specific availability.
- Choose it when: you want broad video access without committing to another monthly service.
2. Netflix — best polished mainstream streaming
Netflix remains a strong choice for viewers who want a mature TV interface, profiles, subtitles and a large on-demand catalog. A subscription is required, and the catalog, plans, simultaneous-stream rules and video quality depend on country and account tier.
Install the official TV listing rather than sideloading a phone APK. On uncertified boxes, the app may be absent or limited even when Android is installed.
3. Prime Video — best for Amazon households
Prime Video combines included Amazon programming with rentals, purchases and, in some markets, separately paid channels. It is particularly convenient if the household already uses Amazon accounts or buys digital video.
Do not assume that an Amazon Prime membership includes every title shown in the app. Prices, add-on channels, advertising tiers and catalog rights vary by country and change over time.
4. Disney+ — best for family and franchise viewing
Disney+ is a focused subscription service for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic programming, with the exact catalog and bundles determined by market. It is a better recommendation than a general “best streaming app” when those libraries are the reason for subscribing.

Check the current official plan in your country before subscribing. App installation is free, but viewing normally requires a paid plan.
5. Tubi or Pluto TV — best free ad-supported viewing
Tubi and Pluto TV are useful alternatives to another subscription: both offer ad-supported on-demand and, where supported, live channels. Pick the one with the stronger local catalog and channel lineup rather than treating either as globally identical.
In the United States, Google TV can already show free channels in its Live area without an app, sign-up or subscription. Google lists Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV and Tubi as additional providers whose apps can add channels after installation: Android TV free live-TV help.

Plex gives a polished television front end to films, shows, music and photos stored on a computer, NAS or another Plex server. It can also offer Plex’s own ad-supported programming where available.
- Before installing: plan where the server and media files will live.
- Network reality: remote playback depends on server configuration and upload bandwidth; local playback is usually simpler.
- Cost: the app and basic use may be free, while advanced features can require a paid plan.
Plex is not a magic drive containing every movie. Use media you own or are authorized to access.

7. Kodi — best customizable media center
Kodi is an open-source media-center application for organizing and playing lawful local or network media, including video, music and photos. It is more configurable than a mainstream streaming app and can work well with network shares.
The application does not grant rights to commercial movies or sports. Add-ons come from different developers, and some third-party repositories facilitate copyright infringement or create security risks. Use official or clearly authorized sources, and treat metadata scraping and add-on permissions with caution.

VLC is a practical choice when you simply need to open files from USB storage, a network share or another device without building a full media library. It can be easier to configure than Kodi for occasional playback.
Actual results still depend on the television or box: an app may recognize a codec, HDR format or audio track that the hardware cannot decode smoothly. Check the current Android TV listing and test representative files before moving a whole library.
9. Steam Link — best PC-to-TV game streaming
Steam Link displays games running on a computer on the television. The app is a gateway to an existing Steam setup, not a substitute for a gaming PC or a separate game subscription.

- Install Steam on the host computer and keep it awake during play.
- Pair a compatible controller with the TV or streaming device.
- Use Ethernet where practical; congested Wi-Fi, distance and router placement can add latency.
- Expect image quality and responsiveness to depend on both the host PC and network.
10. Send Files to TV — best practical transfer utility
Send Files to TV is useful for moving a video, photo, document or APK between a phone, computer and television. It solves a problem that the default TV interface often handles poorly.
“No internet” does not mean “no network”: both devices normally need to be connected to the same local Wi-Fi network for transfer. Install the app on each participating device, approve the transfer, and delete temporary files afterward if storage is limited. Never use it as a reason to install pirated streaming software.

Haystack News
Haystack News is a useful news and free-live-channel option where supported, especially if you want a news-focused interface rather than a general entertainment catalog.
Max and Crunchyroll
Max is a strong paid-streaming alternative, while Crunchyroll is the more purposeful choice for anime viewers. Google Play’s Google TV editorial page lists Max, Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Disney+ and Tubi among prominent TV apps, but editorial placement is not proof that every service is best for every country: Google Play’s Google TV collection.
AirScreen
AirScreen is worth considering only when a particular television lacks the casting protocol you need. Google Cast is common on Android TV and Google TV, while AirPlay support depends on the television, receiver or app. Verify the specific model before adding a third-party casting layer; permissions, advertising and compatibility can vary.

Solid Explorer
Solid Explorer can be useful for USB storage, file organization, cloud connections or sideloading workflows. Check its current TV listing, permissions, trial terms and paid-feature limits before choosing it over a simpler file manager.
How to install an app safely
- From the TV home screen, open Apps.
- Choose Search and enter the app name with the remote, voice search or a paired phone.
- Open the listing from the official developer.
- Select Install, then launch the app and sign in if required.
App names, listings and tabs vary by country and device. A phone app is not automatically suitable for a television: mobile-only software may be absent, open in portrait orientation or require touch gestures.
If an app does not appear
- Confirm that the product is certified Android TV or Google TV, not an uncertified generic Android box.
- Check the Google account and country or region settings.
- Search the exact app and developer name.
- Update TV software, Google Play Store and Google Play services where offered.
- Restart the television or streaming device and check available storage.
- Consult the service’s official compatibility page.
- Use the service’s web or mobile app if the TV version is not offered.
Do not install a random APK merely because the official listing is unavailable. Sideloaded mobile packages can lack remote navigation, contain malware, expose credentials or violate service terms.
Built-in Google TV features you may already have
Before adding another app, check the television’s built-in discovery, watchlist, voice search, Google Cast, USB playback and ambient or screensaver features. Google TV can aggregate recommendations and, in supported markets, free live channels. Its mobile app also provides cross-service discovery and a unified watchlist, although viewing may still require a subscription, purchase or separate app: Google TV mobile app.
For a less promotional home screen, Google TV supports All settings → Accounts & Profiles → your profile → Apps only mode → Turn on. This removes personalized recommendations but also disables Search, Assistant, watchlist changes and like/dislike controls.

Safety, privacy and performance checks
- Use official listings: avoid “free Netflix,” pirate IPTV and unknown APK repositories. Risks include malware, stolen credentials, unstable streams and copyright liability.
- Expect regional differences: catalogs, live channels, MX Player, Hotstar, JioCinema, Sling, Tubi and Pluto TV are not globally equivalent.
- Check storage: cached downloads, large apps and sideloaded packages can fill low-capacity TV storage.
- Check the network: 4K playback and Steam Link are sensitive to Wi-Fi congestion; Ethernet may help.
- Check the remote: some apps expect a keyboard, mouse, touch gestures, gamepad or voice input.
- Review account linking: Google says linking third-party subscriptions can share data with Google services and improve recommendations. Ads and partner revenue arrangements can also affect the interface; see Google’s account and recommendation guidance.
Which app should you install first?
- Casual viewer: YouTube, then the subscription service you already pay for.
- Free viewing: Google TV’s Live area in the US, plus Tubi or Pluto TV where available.
- Personal movie collection: Plex if you have a server; Kodi or VLC for direct local playback.
- Anime: Crunchyroll rather than a general streaming subscription.
- PC gamer: Steam Link with a wired or strong local network and controller.
- File-transfer problem: Send Files to TV on every device involved.
- Privacy-conscious setup: prefer local playback with VLC or Kodi, minimize account linking and review permissions before installation.
