How to Find Your Assigned Polling Place After a Severe Weather Relocation

Severe weather can change a polling place quickly. Verify your assigned location with the responsible election office before traveling, and do not assume a nearby site will accept your ballot.

If severe weather forces a polling-place change, verify the location assigned to your address for this specific election through your state or local election office. Do not assume a nearby polling place will accept your ballot: relocation rules and notice methods vary by jurisdiction, and emergency updates can change quickly.

How to confirm your polling place after a storm

  1. Use an official lookup. Go to your state or local election office website and open its polling-place or voter-registration lookup. Check the result for the specific election you plan to vote in. USAGov notes that polling places are based on residential address and may change between elections: Find your polling place.
  2. Check for a current emergency notice. Look for a dated polling-place change announcement from the election authority. If the office offers election alerts, use its official subscription channel; do not assume that every jurisdiction sends texts or uses a particular app or social platform.
  3. Contact the office if anything is unclear. If the lookup is unavailable, appears out of date, or conflicts with a notice, call the election office responsible for your jurisdiction. Ask for the location assigned to your residential address for the exact election. USAGov directs voters to their state election office for polling-place information.
  4. Read notices at the former site only if it is safe. Some jurisdictions post directions at or near the original polling place. Do not enter a closed building or travel on a road emergency officials have closed; use remote official information or contact the election office instead.
  5. Confirm before going to an alternate site. Make sure it is your assigned location or an authorized vote center for that election. A convenient nearby site may not be able to accept your ballot.

Why the exact assignment matters

Polling-place changes are handled under state and local rules, not one universal national relocation procedure. Some jurisdictions assign voters to a particular polling place or precinct, while vote-center systems can operate differently. Arizona’s Secretary of State warns that in counties with assigned polling places, an out-of-precinct ballot may not count; voters should verify their correct location rather than choose another site based on proximity: Arizona voting and election information.

How relocation notices work in some states

Virginia

Virginia’s Department of Elections describes a process requiring local electoral-board authorization and Department of Elections approval for a relocation. Under its August 2025 Election Day Manual, an alternate site should be within the precinct or no more than one mile outside its boundary. The manual calls for voter notification by efficient means, and directs the chief officer to advise voters at the original location and post notices there. It also says high water should prompt the registrar to follow the local emergency procedure. These are Virginia-specific instructions, not nationwide requirements: Virginia Election Day Manual.

California

California’s Elections Officers Digest describes rules for precinct elections outside the vote-center model. When there is sufficient time, the elections official may designate another polling place and must mail notice to voters. When there is not enough time for mailing, the official or emergency precinct board must designate a nearby site and post notice at or near the original location. The digest expressly excludes vote-center elections from these provisions: California Elections Officers Digest.

Louisiana

Louisiana law provides for emergency relocation when a polling place is destroyed, inaccessible, or unsafe. The Secretary of State determines the nearest feasible and accessible location on local recommendation; the law also describes notice to affected voters, a sign at the former site when practicable, and a state website list of changed sites. Louisiana’s Secretary of State directs voters to its Voter Portal for election-day locations and offers optional electronic emergency-change notifications through the portal or GeauxVote app: Louisiana Elections and Voting; Louisiana polling-place relocation law.

What to do if official sources disagree

  • Prefer a current notice or confirmation from the election office responsible for your address over an undated page, old voter card, or unofficial post.
  • Call that office and ask it to confirm both the location and the election date. If a state portal and local notice conflict, ask which location currently applies to your address.
  • Do not travel to a potentially unsafe site or route just to check a posted notice. Weather conditions and closures take priority; seek remote confirmation.

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission advises election officials to plan alternate polling places and prepare voter-notification methods and directional signs. That planning guidance does not establish one procedure that every jurisdiction must use: EAC, Preparing for Election Day.
