To find which apps are draining your battery, start with your phone’s built-in battery settings—not a separate monitoring app. Check each app’s usage alongside screen time, background activity, signal strength and recent updates. A high percentage is a clue to investigate, not proof that the app is faulty.
Where to check battery use on iPhone and Android
Menu names and features vary by software version and device. The iPhone and Pixel paths below are documented by Apple and Google; for other Android phones, check the manufacturer’s support instructions.

How to tell whether an app is the real cause
Look at the activity behind the percentage, not just the app’s position in the list. A navigation app used on a long trip, a game played for hours, or a video app watched with the screen on can legitimately account for substantial use. The same percentage means something different if an app was rarely opened but spent a long time active in the background.

Screen-on time and deliberate use
Consider what you were doing during the period shown. Camera use, streaming, video, navigation and games can combine a bright screen, processing and network activity. If the app’s screen time matches your use, the ranking alone does not establish a problem.

Background activity
On iPhone, Apple notes that directions, music playback, photo syncing and mail fetching can use battery in the background. On Pixel, inspect the app’s background-use setting. Ask whether it needs location, syncing or frequent refresh when you are not using it. Change one setting at a time, then check usage over a comparable period.
Weak signal and notifications
Low cellular coverage can contribute to drain, so an app’s usage may coincide with the phone struggling to maintain a connection. Apple also identifies notifications as a possible battery factor and notes that Wi-Fi can use less battery than mobile networks for internet apps. If the usage details point to low or no coverage, compare battery use in a place with stronger signal before blaming the app.

Recent update or setup
Battery life can be temporarily affected by background work after an iOS update or device setup. If the change began just after an update, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking usage again. A short-lived increase during that period is not, by itself, evidence of lasting battery damage.
What to try when one app stays unusually high
- Confirm the pattern: compare usage with a representative day and the app’s actual screen and background activity. Avoid drawing conclusions from a single unusual day.
- Adjust only the relevant background setting: on Pixel, go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps, tap the app and review Allow background usage. Google recommends leaving apps optimized by default. On iPhone, use the app’s relevant background, location or notification settings if the activity shown suggests one of them is unnecessary.
- Update and restart: check for available Android and app updates, then restart if the problem continues. Google includes these steps in its Pixel troubleshooting guidance.
- Use a power-saving mode when you need more runtime: Low Power Mode on supported iPhones or Battery Saver on Android can help conserve charge. These modes reduce some activity; they do not identify or repair the cause.
- Escalate cautiously: Google’s Pixel guidance allows force-stopping or uninstalling a persistently problematic app, but force-stopping essential apps or services can prevent the phone from working correctly, and the option is not available for every app. Keep a factory reset as a last resort: it removes apps and data, so back up first and follow current manufacturer guidance.
Could the battery itself be worn?
If the whole phone has poor endurance despite ordinary app use, check battery condition separately from app usage. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health; on iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Newer models may show capacity and details such as cycle count, manufacture date and first-use date. A capacity reading alone does not identify an app as the cause. If iPhone indicates service, Apple advises considering battery replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. For other devices, consult the manufacturer about service eligibility.

Heat can also affect endurance: Google’s Android Help says, “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” If the phone remains unusually hot or drains quickly after checking usage, settings and recent updates, contact the device maker or an authorized service provider rather than assuming an app is defective.
