If Windows Storage settings do not account for the space used on a drive, compare the drive’s free-space figure with Storage’s category totals, then inspect your personal folders and—if needed—run an advanced scan for large hidden or system files. Do not delete unfamiliar files just because they are large: protected files and Windows components may be necessary, and some apparent gaps come from content Explorer cannot enumerate or filesystem overhead.
Compare the drive’s free space with Storage categories
-
Open File Explorer > This PC and note the available space for the drive you want to check.

Open Settings > System > Storage, then select the relevant drive or category. Windows groups space into categories such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. Check System & reserved as well as the more obvious categories; Windows reserves space for system use, including temporary files and caches.

The free-space number is the drive-wide figure to compare against Storage’s category view. Storage is useful for seeing broad categories, but it is not a complete inventory of every file path. Microsoft’s guides to Storage settings and freeing drive space explain these views and cleanup options.

Inspect your personal folders first
In File Explorer, check Downloads, Videos, Music, Pictures, Desktop, and other folders where you keep files. Switch to Details view and sort by Size to bring large items to the top. If you delete files, empty the Recycle Bin to reclaim the space they occupy.
If you want to keep large files but do not need them on the PC, move them to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card. You will not be able to access them while that storage is disconnected, so move files only if that trade-off works for you. Moving files can free space; it does not explain what was missing from Storage’s totals.
Why Explorer may not show everything
Showing hidden items does not give your account access to every protected location. Microsoft documents that directory totals can omit hidden or protected operating-system files and content the current user cannot access. File-system structures also use space without appearing as ordinary personal files. The detailed Microsoft explanation is in an article specifically about Windows Server 2003 and NTFS, so treat its technical discussion as background—not as current Windows 10 or 11 navigation instructions: Microsoft’s NTFS disk-space explanation.

As a result, adding up visible folder sizes may not match the drive’s used-space figure. An access-limited scan can miss additional paths too; an incomplete listing is not proof that a folder is safe to remove or that it contains nothing.
Use a command-line scan only when you need to locate large files
For advanced inspection, Microsoft’s Windows Server troubleshooting guidance gives these examples for finding large files on C:. They are broad recursive searches, may take time, and can still return incomplete results when access is denied. Microsoft presents them in a Windows Server context, so regard them as diagnostic techniques rather than Windows consumer support instructions.
PowerShell: list the 20 largest files it can enumerate
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem -Path "C:" -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Sort-Object Length -Descending | Select-Object FullName, Length -First 20

The output shows each listed file’s path and length. Because the command suppresses errors, it may not make inaccessible paths obvious; its results should not be treated as a complete accounting of the drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommand Prompt: list files recursively, including hidden and system entries
In Command Prompt, run:
dir C: /s /a /o-s
This asks dir to search recursively, include files with any attributes, and sort by descending size. It can encounter access restrictions and is not a substitute for reviewing individual files before removal. The examples come from Microsoft’s Windows Server low-disk-space guidance.
If a particular application’s temporary files keep growing, identify the application that creates them before deciding whether they can be removed. Back up important data before making changes to system locations.

Review cleanup options before removing anything
Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup
When available, open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations to review suggested items. You can also use Disk Cleanup to review temporary and system-file categories; choose Clean up system files to see additional choices. Read each category before selecting it rather than checking every box automatically.
In particular, deleting Previous Windows Installation(s) removes the Windows.old folder and means you cannot go back to the previous Windows version. Keep it if you may need that rollback option.
Storage Sense
Storage Sense is a cleanup feature, not a full inventory of what occupies a drive. It works on the system drive, and what it manages depends on its settings. Downloads and cloud files are not cleaned unless configured. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from online-only management.

Microsoft says that in Windows 11 version 22H2, the default was to make OneDrive cloud files online-only if they had not been opened for more than 30 days. That is a version-specific default, not a promise about every Windows version or configuration. Review the current settings before relying on Storage Sense to free space. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions.
If the numbers still do not reconcile
Protected paths, permission limits, and filesystem overhead can account for differences between visible folder totals and drive usage. If the discrepancy persists, record the drive’s free space, the largest paths your scan can access, the Windows version and build shown by winver, and any access errors. This information helps distinguish a normal visibility gap from an issue that needs further investigation. Microsoft’s Windows Server guidance also recommends collecting directory-size reports, timestamps, large-file paths, and event data when escalating a persistent low-space problem; that guidance is server-focused, but the details can help describe the symptom clearly.
