An evening slowdown can come from busy devices or crowded Wi-Fi, but the clock alone cannot rule out your internet provider. Compare repeated tests at different times and locations—and, if possible, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection—to see whether the wireless link is the likely bottleneck before changing equipment.
Why Wi-Fi can slow down in the evening
More people may be streaming, gaming, or working online in the evening. Activity inside your home can compete for the capacity available to your devices, while nearby wireless networks may also add congestion. The device, distance from the router, walls, router placement, and Wi-Fi band all affect the wireless connection. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) notes that simultaneous wireless use and neighboring networks can affect performance; Microsoft also identifies channel congestion and placement as relevant factors.

But a predictable time pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis. Broadband speed can vary by time of day as well as by conditions inside the home. Ofcom recommends testing more than once, and Google advises checking speed and asking the provider whether service problems are affecting performance. An evening slowdown, by itself, does not establish whether the cause is Wi-Fi, your equipment, or the provider connection.

Repeat tests under comparable conditions
Test once during the usual slowdown and again at a faster time. Use the same device and speed-test method where possible. Note the time, room, device, Wi-Fi band, and result; one test cannot show whether a recurring pattern exists. Ofcom recommends testing more than once because speeds can vary by day and time. Compare rooms and distance from the router
Run a test near the router and another where the slowdown is most noticeable. A substantial difference points toward a coverage or obstacle issue: walls, distance, and router placement can weaken Wi-Fi. Check the location where you actually use the affected device, not just the room with the router. Google lists distance and barriers among factors to check in its slow-internet troubleshooting guide.
-
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, if practical
Temporarily connect a device to the router with an Ethernet cable and test it around the same time as the Wi-Fi test. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a definitive verdict: a consistently strong wired result while Wi-Fi is slow makes the wireless link or local Wi-Fi conditions more likely to deserve attention. If wired and wireless results both drop, check the modem/router and provider connection too.

Check the band and the device
Find out whether the device is using 2.4, 5, or 6 GHz, and whether it supports the band you expect. A device may not support newer bands, and the faster option is not automatically best at every distance. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance explains the range and obstacle trade-offs.

Look for busy devices and nearby-network congestion
Check whether several household devices are using the connection heavily at the same time. Nearby Wi-Fi networks can also affect performance. Microsoft describes channel congestion and channel analysis as useful checks; a Wi-Fi analyzer app can help visualize networks and channels, but installing one does not by itself establish that congestion is the cause.

Ask the provider to check service performance
If repeated results remain unexpectedly low—especially if a wired test also falls—contact your internet service provider and ask whether there is a service issue or a problem with the connection to your home. Google includes checking with the provider among its troubleshooting recommendations.
What the Wi-Fi bands trade off
| Band | Typical strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Generally reaches farther and works better through walls; it is widely supported. | Typically offers slower throughput and fewer non-overlapping channels than 5 GHz. |
| 5 GHz | Can provide faster throughput and has more non-overlapping channels than 2.4 GHz. | Has shorter range and is less effective through obstacles. |
| 6 GHz | Can provide strong performance nearby. | Requires compatible newer equipment and devices, and has shorter range. |
These are general trade-offs, not a universal ranking for every room or device. Choose based on device support, distance, and barriers. Microsoft summarizes the band differences in its home-layout guidance.

When router placement or new equipment may help
If tests are markedly worse in certain rooms, try placing the router in a more open, central location rather than in a corner or behind obstacles. An extender may help when the evidence points to a coverage gap, but adding equipment is unlikely to solve a provider-side problem or congestion that is not caused by weak coverage.

The FCC advises checking whether the router is outdated and whether its capabilities match the speed of the subscribed service. A router cannot remove a bottleneck elsewhere in the connection. Consider replacement or a provider-rented router only if the existing equipment is inadequate for your service and household needs; check the model and its capability before buying.
