How to Find What Websites Are Built With in Bulk—Without a Wappalyzer Subscription

Compare practical ways to identify website technologies in bulk without a Wappalyzer subscription, including free lookups, exports, API options, and freshness trade-offs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can check website technology stacks in bulk without subscribing to Wappalyzer, but the right route depends on whether you need a small list, a large export, or automated processing. BuiltWith documents multi-domain lookups and background bulk API jobs; StackScan advertises technology search, domain exports, and higher-plan bulk enrichment. For a handful of sites, Wappalyzer’s free allowance and browser-based checks may be enough. None of these options guarantees a complete or current inventory of every technology on a site.

Choose a route based on how many sites you need to check

Technology detectors infer a website’s stack from signals they can observe, such as page content and exposed code. Results can cover categories including content management systems, ecommerce platforms, analytics, frameworks, and infrastructure. The result is an informed detection, not a guaranteed inventory: visibility, pages analyzed, and record freshness all affect what appears.

  • A few domains: Try Wappalyzer’s free account or a browser-based check, then verify important findings against the site itself.
  • A list you need to export: Compare Wappalyzer’s bulk lookup workflow with StackScan’s advertised domain exports and BuiltWith’s API output formats.
  • Recurring or automated processing: Examine BuiltWith’s batch-oriented Domain API or StackScan’s higher-plan bulk enrichment/API access. Check quotas and costs before building a workflow around either service.

What each option offers

Option Bulk workflow Published limits or scale Important qualification
Wappalyzer free account and lookup Lookup page accepts a CSV/TXT upload; API and prospecting workflows are plan-based. Wappalyzer states a free allowance of 50 lookups and email verifications per month and five website alerts. Its lookup page states an upload limit of up to 100,000 URLs. Cached results count as one lookup each; live results count as five. Confirm that the upload and options you need are available on your account tier. Cached and live results differ in freshness and credit use.
BuiltWith Domain API documents multi-domain requests, high-throughput lookup, and asynchronous bulk jobs; output formats include JSON, XML, CSV, and XLSX. BuiltWith’s home page reported 127,700+ technologies in 2026. Technology coverage is a vendor-reported figure. Check API access, batch limits, and pricing for your use case.
StackScan Advertises technology, keyword, and location search, domain exports, and bulk enrichment/API access on higher plans. StackScan’s home page reported 399M+ websites, 55,000+ technologies, and plans starting at $39 per month in 2026. Coverage and starting price are vendor claims; verify current plan entitlements and pricing before purchase.

Wappalyzer’s current product details are on its Technology lookup, Technology lookup API, and Plans & pricing pages. BuiltWith describes its options on the Domain API page, while StackScan lists its search and plan claims on Search websites by technology stack.

Understand the trade-off between cached results and live scans

An indexed result can be quick, but its usefulness depends on when it was last checked. Wappalyzer says its cached results have been verified within the last 30 days and describes them as more complete; that is the vendor’s characterization. Wappalyzer also says live results are more up to date. Its API documentation distinguishes a faster live single-page scan from a recursive crawl, which can take up to 15 minutes and may find more than a single-page scan.

For Wappalyzer’s documented API pricing, a URL uses one lookup credit for a cached lookup and five credits for a live recursive lookup. These figures concern Wappalyzer’s API, not a general industry standard. For other vendors, ask whether an answer comes from an existing database or a fresh scan, when the record was last verified, and whether crawling beyond one page is included.

Before uploading a large list or committing to an API, compare the details that determine whether the output will be usable:

Provider pages establish advertised capabilities and limits, not which detector is most accurate. The vendor coverage figures above are not independent measurements, and there is no independent benchmark here for ranking detection accuracy. Test a small, representative sample—including domains whose stacks you already know—before relying on results for a larger list.

Use a small pilot before processing the full list

  1. Prepare a representative sample. Include different kinds of sites and, where possible, a few with a known stack. Remove duplicates and check that the domains are valid.
  2. Choose the result type. Decide whether a cached record is sufficient or whether you need a live scan. For Wappalyzer, account for the documented difference in credits between cached and live recursive lookups.
  3. Check plan access and limits. Confirm upload size, API eligibility, export format, batch behavior, and the price at the volume you expect—not just the advertised starting price.
  4. Review misses and stale records. Compare the output with your known examples, note technologies not detected, and check whether the provider shows when records were verified.
  5. Scale only if the pilot fits. Export or automate the remaining list after confirming that the fields, freshness, and workflow meet your needs.
