Measure before choosing a size
Use a soft cloth measuring tape and follow the instructions for the specific product. Different guides describe the chest measurement slightly differently, so use the method that matches the chart you are consulting.

- Careletics: Measure around the fullest part of the chest with the tape parallel to the floor. Careletics size guide.
Keep the tape level and comfortably snug; do not pull it tight or add inches to compensate for the fit you want. The chart’s sizing convention determines how to interpret the measurement.

Do not assume a chart lists finished garment dimensions. Some charts use body measurements; others may present garment measurements. Careletics explicitly says its scrub size chart is based on body measurements, not garment measurements. Carhartt describes its chart as approximate general body dimensions. Follow the convention stated by the product or chart rather than comparing its numbers as if every brand measures the same thing.

Goldman School of Dental Medicine sizing guide also advises considering hips for some wearers. A practical decision order
- Find the exact product chart. Use the chart for the brand and style you plan to buy, not a general scrub-size chart.
- Measure as directed. Record your chest or bust measurement without adding allowance for comfort.
- Check the chart convention. Confirm whether its figures describe body measurements or the garment itself.
- Apply the product’s between-size advice. If it says to size up, use that rule; if it gives a fit choice, decide whether you want closer or looser workwear.
- Account for relevant proportions and use. Consider hips where the cut makes them relevant, as well as whether you need room for comfortable movement or layers.
