How to Find the Nearest Public Defibrillator and Check Access

Call 999 first in a UK suspected cardiac arrest. For advance planning, DefibFinder shows AEDs registered on The Circuit, but only the emergency call handler can help confirm access for the incident.

If someone may be in cardiac arrest in the UK, call 999 now. The ambulance call handler can guide CPR, direct you to the nearest registered public defibrillator (AED) and explain how to reach it, including a cabinet code if needed. For planning ahead, use DefibFinder to see AED locations registered on The Circuit—but a map listing does not prove a device is accessible or ready at this moment.

In an emergency, call 999 before searching

Call 999 if someone has collapsed and may be in cardiac arrest. Put the phone on speaker if possible, follow the call handler’s CPR instructions and ask another person to retrieve an AED when directed. Resuscitation Council UK says, “The ambulance call handler will guide you through how to perform CPR, and they will also tell you where your nearest defibrillator is.” The handler can provide directions and relevant access details, such as a cabinet code. Do not delay the emergency call to search a map or travel to a device on your own. The dispatcher can help identify a registered rescue-ready AED for the current incident and coordinate its retrieval.

Use DefibFinder to locate devices before an incident

For familiarisation and planning, use DefibFinder, which displays locations registered on The Circuit, the UK’s national defibrillator network. Checking likely locations in advance can help you recognise where devices are placed, but the map is not an emergency dispatch service.

How to check whether a listed AED is reachable

A map pin answers where a device is recorded, not whether you can get to it right now. When planning, look for practical access information:

  • Whether the AED is indoors or outdoors.
  • Opening hours or other restrictions on access.
  • Whether it is in a locked cabinet and requires a code.

The Circuit can hold location and access details, and the emergency call handler can provide directions or a code where relevant. But device information depends on registration and updates, so a public map cannot guarantee current access or operational status. During a suspected arrest, confirm the nearest usable device with the 999 call handler. If appropriate, nearby staff or AED signage may also help someone sent to retrieve it.

You can use a public AED without training

Public access AEDs provide spoken or visual instructions and analyze the person’s heart rhythm. They advise or deliver a shock only when indicated. Lack of training should not stop you from using one: follow the device prompts and keep following the emergency dispatcher’s directions. Resuscitation Council UK guidance
