How to Find the Missing BitLocker or Device Encryption Setting in Windows 10/11

Missing BitLocker settings in Windows 10 or 11? First distinguish the Pro/Enterprise/Education Control Panel tool from Device encryption, then check edition, account type, and device support.

If Manage BitLocker is missing, check your Windows edition first: the manual BitLocker Drive Encryption interface is not available in Windows Home. If Device encryption is missing from Settings, sign in with an administrator account and check whether the PC meets the feature’s hardware and firmware requirements. These are related but distinct encryption controls, so the right fix depends on which one you cannot find.

Identify which encryption setting is missing

Windows has two controls people commonly refer to as “BitLocker.” Manage BitLocker opens the manual BitLocker Drive Encryption interface for individual drives. Device encryption is a separate Settings feature that can automatically encrypt the operating-system drive and fixed drives on supported devices.

Control Where to look Availability and purpose
BitLocker Drive Encryption (“Manage BitLocker”) Search Start for “Manage BitLocker” or open Control Panel and look for BitLocker Drive Encryption. Available in Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education; not available in Home. It provides the manual drive-management interface. Microsoft: BitLocker Drive Encryption
Device encryption Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption. Available on a wider range of supported devices, including some running Home. It can encrypt the operating-system drive and fixed drives. Microsoft: Device Encryption in Windows

To confirm your edition, open Settings > System > About and check Windows specifications. This is the quickest way to rule out an edition limitation before troubleshooting the device.

If “Manage BitLocker” is not showing

Check the Windows edition

If your PC runs Windows Home, the missing Control Panel interface is expected. Do not keep searching for “Manage BitLocker”: that manual BitLocker Drive Encryption interface is not included in Home. A supported Home device may still offer Device encryption in Settings, but it is a different control with different eligibility requirements. Microsoft documents the editions for BitLocker Drive Encryption.

#1 Best Overall

If you have Pro, Enterprise, or Education

Sign in to an administrator account and search for “Manage BitLocker” again. On a work- or school-managed PC, organization policy may control how encryption is enabled or managed. If the option remains unavailable, ask your IT administrator rather than changing firmware or policy yourself.

If “Device encryption” is not showing in Settings

Check your account type

Open Settings > Accounts > Your info to see whether your account is an administrator. Microsoft’s documented steps require an administrator account to enable Device encryption manually. If the setting is absent, the account may be a standard user, or the device may not support the feature. Microsoft: Device Encryption in Windows

Device encryption may turn on during setup when a supported device is set up with a Microsoft or work/school account. Setting up with a local account does not turn it on automatically. That does not by itself establish whether the device is eligible; check its reported support status next.

Read the device-encryption support status

  1. Open Start, search for System Information, then select Run as administrator.
  2. In System Summary, find Automatic Device Encryption Support or Device Encryption Support.
  3. Read the reported status. “Meets prerequisites” indicates the listed requirements are met. Other messages can identify an issue such as “TPM is not usable,” “WinRE is not configured,” or “PCR7 binding is not supported.”

These messages point to different causes; they do not all call for the same fix. Microsoft describes Device encryption and its requirements in Device Encryption in Windows.

Understand a PCR7 or Secure Boot message

“PCR7 binding is not supported” can mean Secure Boot is disabled in BIOS/UEFI. Microsoft also notes that certain connected hardware during boot—such as specialized network interfaces, docking stations, or external graphics cards—can affect PCR7 binding. If you see this message, check the PC maker’s guidance for your exact model before changing firmware settings.

Check TPM status without clearing it

If System Information reports a TPM problem, open Windows Security > Device security and look for Security processor and Security processor details. If that section is absent, the PC may not have a TPM, or its TPM may be disabled in UEFI; its absence alone does not prove the hardware is missing.

Firmware labels and steps vary by manufacturer. A TPM option may be called AMD fTPM or Intel PTT. Use documentation from your PC manufacturer for model-specific instructions, and contact your organization’s IT team first on a managed computer. Do not clear the TPM as a routine troubleshooting step: Microsoft warns users to back up data before clearing it. For TPM 2.0 guidance, see Microsoft’s instructions to enable TPM 2.0.

Protect the recovery key before relying on encryption

If encryption is already active or you are about to enable it, make sure the recovery key is backed up somewhere you can access if Windows asks for it. Microsoft supports saving a recovery key to a USB drive; do not keep that drive with the computer. For a work or school device, IT may manage or retain the recovery key, so ask them how to retrieve it.

Windows 10 support status is separate from this problem

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 devices continue to work, but they no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date. This lifecycle change does not explain why a BitLocker setting is missing; use the edition, account, and eligibility checks above.
