The best Steam deal is a game you genuinely want at a price you are comfortable paying—not necessarily the game with the biggest discount. Use your Wishlist to track games and sale alerts, set a personal spending limit, then check the exact edition and current refund terms before you buy.
Build a Wishlist around games you actually want
Add games you intend to play to your Steam Wishlist rather than browsing sales with no plan. Steam says Wishlist notifications can arrive by email or through the mobile app when a listed item is on sale as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, or Weekend Deal. Alerts help you notice an offer; they do not tell you whether it is worth buying. Treat them as a prompt to reassess the game and price, not as a reason to spend.
Use Wishlist filters as a way to narrow the list
In a February 15, 2018 announcement, Steam documented Wishlist filters for discount levels, price tiers, Steam Wallet balance, tags or genres, Early Access, and unreleased games. The interface may have changed since that announcement, so check which filters are available in your current Wishlist. Filters can make a large list easier to review, but they do not judge whether a game suits you. Use tags and genres to find relevant titles, and consider whether an Early Access or unreleased game fits your expectations before treating its discount as a bargain.
Decide what a good price means for you
Set a maximum price before opening a sale page. Compare the current price with that limit and with how likely you are to play the game soon. A dramatic percentage discount can still be poor value if you would not choose the game at that price, while a smaller discount may be worthwhile for a title you have been waiting to play.

- Fit: Does the genre and style match what you want to play?
- Confidence: Have you checked the game’s reviews and whether their concerns matter to you?
- Practicality: Do your computer’s specifications meet the game’s requirements?
- Use: Do you expect to play it, or are you adding it mainly because the price looks low?
These are decision checks, not guarantees of enjoyment or performance. Review quality and game-specific performance vary, so assess each title on its own rather than treating a discount percentage as proof of value.

On the Steam store page, confirm which purchase option you selected and what it includes. Check whether the price is for the base game, a bundle, or an edition with downloadable content, and make sure the included content matches what you want. Steam’s 2018 Wishlist announcement explains that when a product has multiple purchase options, buyers choose between them on the store page.

Also check the game’s platform requirements and the price shown for your own purchase before paying. Do not assume that a lower-priced edition includes the same content as another option.
Use price-history sites carefully
A third-party database can be a supplementary check when you want context beyond the current offer. SteamDB describes itself as a Steam database. Its homepage alone does not establish how a particular historical-price chart is calculated, how complete its coverage is, or whether a displayed low applies to your region or edition. Verify those details on the service before relying on a figure; the current Steam store price remains the amount to assess at checkout.

Check Steam’s live refund terms
If your decision depends on being able to return a purchase, read the current Steam Refunds policy before buying. Eligibility can depend on the applicable terms and circumstances; consult Steam’s live page rather than relying on remembered thresholds or assuming every purchase qualifies.

- Add games you genuinely want to your Steam Wishlist. Enable email or mobile notifications if sale alerts would help you keep track.
- Review the Wishlist when you receive an alert or browse a sale. Use available price, discount, or genre filters to narrow the list.
