To find your code, open Map View, tap your Trainer Profile, then go to Friends and choose Add Friend. That screen shows your 12-digit Trainer Code and its matching QR code, which other players can use to add you. Niantic’s Help Center calls this the Trainer Code, though many players still refer to it as a friend code, and the two terms mean the same thing in this context.
How to find your Trainer Code

- Open Map View in Pokémon GO.
- Tap your Trainer Profile.
- Tap Friends, then tap Add Friend.
- Your Trainer Code and its QR code appear on this screen. Each Trainer has one unique 12-digit code and one corresponding QR code.
The 12-digit code is the one to read aloud or type. The QR code is the one another player scans with their own phone.

Niantic lists two official ways to connect through this flow. The method you choose depends on whether the other player can type a code or needs to scan one.

Only the 12-digit code and QR code are the standard entry points described on Niantic’s Adding Friends page. The contacts route is a third option that depends on device permissions, which you can revoke in your device’s settings at any time.
How to change or reset your code
Inside the Add Friend screen, tap the refresh icon to generate a new Trainer Code. Niantic states this action permanently resets the code. The old code will not come back, and there is no documented way to undo it.

Plan the reset before you do it:
- Share the replacement code with anyone who needs to add you. Old codes you have already given out are no longer the way to reach you.
- Update any places where you posted the previous code, such as a group chat or a profile bio.
- Do not assume that people who saved the old code will see the new one automatically.
Friend request and friend list limits
Niantic’s help content sets two limits you should know about before you start sending requests:

- Requests expire after 7 days. If the other player does not respond to a friend request within 7 days, it expires. You will need to send a new request.
- The Niantic Friend List holds up to 550 friends. That total counts friends across Niantic apps, not only Pokémon GO. If you are near the limit, remove an inactive friend before adding someone new.
These figures are the ones published on Niantic’s Help Center pages as of October 2026. Niantic can change them, so check the Adding Friends page if a number does not match what you see in the app.

Codes that are not your friend code
Pokémon GO has several codes that look similar. Do not share the wrong one.
Battle Code
Niantic’s Battling Other Trainers page states that “Battle Codes are different than the QR codes used to add Friends.” A Battle Code starts a Trainer Battle between players. A new Battle Code is generated each time you sign in, so a code you saw earlier may no longer work. Sharing your Battle Code will not add you as a friend.

Referral code
Referral codes use a separate Invite flow, with a share or copy option. Niantic’s Referring Friends and Referral Bonuses page describes them as a way to invite eligible new or returning players. They are not the same as your Trainer Code, so use the Invite flow for referrals and the Add Friend flow for friend connections.

- The other player cannot find you. Confirm they are entering the current 12-digit code. If you reset your code, the old one will not work.
- The QR code will not scan. Make sure the code is fully on screen and that the other player is using the QR Code tab inside Add Friend, not a generic camera or a Battle Code.
- The request disappeared. Requests expire after 7 days if no response is given. Send a new request.
- Contact matching does not work. Check that Pokémon GO has contact permission in your device settings and that the email on your account matches the one in the other player’s contacts.
