Confirm whether the workplace supplies scrubs, then choose a garment that meets those requirements and follow the facility’s laundering instructions.
Do hospitals require a specific scrub color for your position?
Some employers assign scrub colors by role or department; others may have different rules. There is no national color chart that determines what every healthcare worker should wear. The current policy for your own workplace is the deciding source.

For example, Parkview’s 2026 policy assigns Caribbean blue to nursing, olive to nursing support, black to cardiopulmonary and sleep services, and pewter to radiology. Those assignments apply to Parkview’s listed groups, not healthcare workers generally. The policy uses Cherokee shades as its reference and permits another brand only when its shade matches. What to check in your workplace policy
- Scope: Make sure the policy applies to your facility, department, and role. Clinical staff, support teams, students, and procedural areas may have different requirements.
- Color and reference: Record the precise color or reference shade. Ask whether another brand is acceptable and how the employer determines a match; a retailer’s color name alone may not establish that it matches.
- Garment type: Check whether the policy requires a particular style or matching top and pants. A correct-color top may not be enough.
- Logos and accessories: Look for rules on embroidery, visible badges, pins, patches, or other adornments.
- Employer-provided uniforms: Confirm whether scrubs are supplied for your area or task before buying a personal set. Parkview’s policy, for instance, specifies settings where the hospital provides scrubs.
If any requirement is unclear, ask your manager or uniform office before ordering. Keep a copy of the current policy or written clarification so you can check a product against the actual rule.

Use this checklist before you buy
- Find the latest policy. Check the official policy for the right facility, department, and role, rather than relying on a general color chart or an old coworker’s uniform.
- Write down the approved shade and brand rule. Note the exact reference and whether substitutions are allowed only when they match it.
- Check the full outfit requirements. Verify top-and-pant coordination, garment type, logos or embroidery, badges, and accessory limits.
- Find out whether scrubs are provided. Do this before purchasing for a unit or task that may use facility-issued garments.
- Check the exact garment’s size guide. Use measurements for the particular top or pants rather than relying only on a generic size label. - Confirm laundry instructions. Follow your facility’s guidance for routine care and for garments contaminated during work.
- Keep PPE decisions separate. Scrub color and style do not determine what protective equipment a task requires.
Scrubs are not a substitute for PPE
Scrubs are work clothing, not automatically personal protective equipment. CDC guidance says PPE selection should reflect the anticipated interaction with a patient and the likely route of transmission. Follow your facility’s task-specific PPE rules rather than treating a uniform as protection. CDC: Laundry and Bedding.
Follow facility guidance for laundering
Do not assume that home laundering is permitted or that one cleaning routine fits every task. CDC guidance notes that facility policies vary. It says that when facilities require uniforms, they should arrange laundering or provide employees with infection-control and cleaning guidance based on the work performed. How much weight should you give antimicrobial claims?
A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine in July 2013 studied two antimicrobial scrub products at Denver Health. The authors reported: “We found no evidence that either antimicrobial scrub product decreased bacterial contamination of HCWs’ uniforms or skin after an 8-hour workday.” The result is limited to those products and study conditions; it does not establish how every antimicrobial garment sold today performs. Once you know the policy, compare available garments on the requirements that matter for your workplace: exact shade match, approved cut and set requirements, branding and accessory rules, garment measurements and length, availability in your size, and care instructions. Do not assume that a brand name or a color label guarantees acceptance; check the actual garment against the employer’s reference.

If your policy allows online shopping, search for a scrub uniform set only after confirming the workplace’s color and uniform rules. Check the specific item’s color options and size guide before purchase.
