Start by identifying the country and local authority where you may move, then use that authority’s official school or catchment lookup for each candidate address. A catchment result is a shortlist—not a promise of admission. Check each school’s current admissions arrangements for the intended entry year, then compare schools on outcomes, inspection information, curriculum, activities and the practical school run before making a housing decision.
1. Identify the right education authority and school phase
There is no single UK-wide catchment map or universal definition of catchment. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate information services, and the rules can also vary by local authority and school. Begin with the destination country and the authority responsible for admissions in the area you are considering. GOV.UK’s England performance service links to separate services for the other UK nations; use the relevant local authority for address-based admissions information.

Before searching, note the candidate address, the child’s age or school phase, and the intended entry year. The school serving one phase may not be the relevant option for another, and policies or boundaries can change between admission years.

2. Look up each candidate address in the official finder
Use the authority’s address or postcode lookup
Search every address you are considering in the responsible authority’s official school or catchment finder. Record the schools returned for the correct phase and entry year. A property listing, estate-agent map or third-party checker can help identify schools to investigate, but confirm the result against the authority’s published information and the individual school’s admissions policy.

Check how distance and boundaries are measured
“Nearest” can mean different things. Queensland’s state-school guidance directs families to EdMap and says the local school is measured by the shortest, most direct road route to its main entrance. The guidance, updated 17 June 2026, says out-of-catchment applications are not guaranteed and depend on capacity and enrolment rules. See Queensland’s catchment guidance.
Buckinghamshire’s checker reports straight-line distance to the nearest open school gate and warns that its distance may differ slightly from the measurement used in official allocation calculations. It also says some schools use different rules, including parish-based areas. Check Buckinghamshire’s school-place finder and guidance. These are local examples, not methods you can assume apply elsewhere.

3. Read the admissions policy before treating a school as an option
For each school on your shortlist, find the arrangements that apply to the intended entry year. Check:
- Whether the school uses a catchment or designated area at all.
- How it defines the home address and when that address must be established.
- Its priority order if there are more applicants than places, including any faith or parish criteria.
- How distance is measured and what happens when applicants are tied.
- Whether it publishes allocation, capacity or availability information relevant to your child’s year.
In England, admission authorities must apply their published arrangements when a school is oversubscribed. Distance may be a priority criterion or tie-break, and some religiously designated schools may apply faith criteria. The route for applying also depends on the area and school type; GOV.UK’s relocation guidance for England explains the role of local authorities and admission arrangements.

Do not treat a catchment result as an offer or guarantee. Buckinghamshire Council puts it plainly: “An address in the catchment area does not guarantee you a place at the school.” The applicable admissions policy determines priority, and available places matter.
4. Compare schools on more than distance or a single rating
Once you have a policy-checked shortlist, compare factors that affect both the chance of admission and whether a school suits your child. England’s Department for Education performance service provides exam and test results, Ofsted reports and financial information. The Ofsted area finder lets you search by postcode or local authority, filter provision and save schools for side-by-side inspection comparisons, including inspection dates and grades. The Department for Education’s School Profiles service includes admissions, policies, curriculum, extracurricular activities and academic performance.

| What to compare | What to record |
|---|---|
| Address and admission year | Whether the authority’s current lookup places the exact address in a catchment or designated area for the relevant phase and year. |
| Admissions rules | Admission authority, oversubscription order, any faith or parish criteria, and tie-break rules. |
| Distance | The stated measurement method and, if relevant, the distance used as an allocation criterion. |
| Availability | Published places, capacity or past allocation information, if the authority provides it. |
| School information | Performance results, inspection findings and inspection date; curriculum, policies and relevant activities. |
| Travel | Likely route and journey time at school-run hours, transport options and practical constraints. |
| Open questions | Anything that needs written confirmation from the school or admission authority before you rely on it. |
Read inspection findings and results in context rather than using one headline grade or score as a complete measure of fit. Consider what matters for your child, and check the date and scope of the information you use.
5. Confirm uncertain cases before committing to a move
Ask the admission authority or school directly when an address is close to a boundary, the published map and checker appear inconsistent, different schools apply different rules, or the move depends on a particular place. Ask whether the address is assessed under the policy for the intended entry year, which distance method applies, and whether allocation or capacity information is available.
Best Value
If the move is in-year, contact the relevant admissions team early. In England, popular schools may already be full, limiting the available choices; the application route varies by area and school type. Confirm the current process and deadlines with the local authority rather than relying on dates in older guidance.
