To judge a retired LEGO set’s price, identify the exact set number, compare recent completed sales for the same condition, add delivery costs, then inspect the listing and seller. Current asking prices show what sellers hope to receive—not what buyers have actually paid.
Start with the exact set number
Search by both the set name and its LEGO set number. A name alone can bring up similar sets, minifigures, loose parts, or bundles, which can make price comparisons meaningless. Confirm that the listing is for the whole set you want, not a parts lot or a different edition.

Decide what you are shopping for before comparing prices: sealed, used and complete, or incomplete. If your goal is to build the set, a complete used copy may be a better fit than a sealed box; compare it with other complete used copies, not sealed examples.

Check BrickLink’s sales and listings separately
BrickLink’s Price Guide separates “Past 6 Months Sales” from “Current Items for Sale.” Its sales section uses live order data and excludes cancelled orders. It reports sale counts and low, average, quantity-weighted average, and high prices. Use the completed-sale figures as transaction evidence; use current listings to see what is available now, not as proof those prices will be paid. The Price Guide page was last updated June 6, 2025.

Cross-check completed eBay sales
Look for completed sales of the same set in a comparable condition. SoldBrick collects completed eBay listings, includes shipping in the amount paid, and separates sealed, used-complete, and incomplete examples. Its classifications rely partly on listing titles and eBay condition fields and may be imperfect, so treat it as a useful way to inspect comparable sales rather than an authoritative appraisal.
When reviewing results, exclude parts-only listings, unrelated bundles, and listings for a different set. If possible, compare BrickLink and eBay evidence rather than relying on a single source. A small or mixed group of sales is a weaker guide than several recent sales that closely match your target.

Match condition before comparing prices
Sealed, used-complete, and incomplete copies are different purchases, and combining them into one average can mislead. Keep these details visible for each sale or offer:

- Exact set number and whether the listing is for the complete set.
- Sealed, used-complete, or incomplete condition.
- Whether the box and instructions are included, and their condition.
- Whether all pieces and minifigures are included, and what evidence supports that claim.
- Whether the figure is a completed sale or a current asking price.
- Shipping, applicable taxes, and any import costs for your destination.
For a used set, look for a parts inventory, clear photos, or another specific indication of completeness. A box or instructions can matter to a collector, but may not matter as much to someone buying primarily to build; compare offers that include similar extras.

Compare the delivered total, not just the sticker price
Add shipping to the item price, and include taxes or import costs where relevant. A listing with a lower headline price can cost more once delivered. Costs and buyer protections vary by transaction and location, so check the terms that apply to the specific purchase rather than assuming every marketplace deal works the same way.
Keep currencies consistent when comparing sales. If a marketplace displays prices in a different currency, account for conversion and any applicable charges before deciding that one offer is cheaper.

Check the listing and seller before buying
Price history can show whether an offer is in the range of comparable transactions, but it cannot establish that a particular listing is safe or accurately described. Before paying, check:
- Photos of the actual set and, for used copies, enough detail to assess its condition.
- A clear statement of what is included and what is missing.
- Seller feedback and history, along with the platform’s transaction and dispute terms.
- The delivered total and the stated shipping method.
- Whether the seller’s description agrees with the photos and the set number.
Be cautious if the set number is missing, the photos do not show the item being sold, or the seller cannot explain whether the set is complete. If those details cannot be confirmed, do not treat the listing as comparable to well-documented sales.

Why old price examples are not current valuations
Historical reports can illustrate how particular sets changed over time, but they are not a current price guide for every retired set. eBay’s 2023 State of Collectibles report gives selected LEGO examples using eBay data from 2019–2022. The figures below are in AUD and rounded to the nearest hundred dollars:

These are five selected examples from that historical report, not live prices or recommendations for what to pay. They do not establish that every retired LEGO set appreciates. For a purchase today, recent comparable completed sales are more relevant than a historical average.
A practical checklist before you make an offer
- Find the exact set number and confirm the listing is for the whole set.
- Choose the condition you actually want: sealed, used-complete, or incomplete.
- Review recent BrickLink sales and current listings separately.
- Cross-check completed eBay sales for the same set and comparable condition; exclude parts lots and unrelated bundles.
- Compare box, instructions, minifigures, and evidence of completeness.
- Add shipping and any applicable tax or import cost to each offer.
- Assess the seller, photos, description, and transaction terms before paying.
BrickLink’s part-out value is not the same thing as a price for selling or buying the whole set; its Price Guide overview cautions against treating it as such. Do not use the value of the individual pieces as a substitute for completed-sale comparisons of the assembled set.
