Start with the NFL’s official injury report for the correct week, then check it again as kickoff approaches. Read the injury description, practice participation and game status as separate fields: a practice note describes what happened during practice, while the game designation is the team’s status report for that contest.
Where to find the official NFL injury report
Open the NFL’s official injury report and select the report for the relevant week. Confirm the player’s team and game so you are not relying on an older report or one for a different week. The linked page is the Week 4 report for the 2026 season; use the corresponding current-week report when setting a lineup for another week.

The report presents injury description, practice status and game status in distinct fields. For example, its Week 4 listings include full, limited and no participation alongside separate designations such as Questionable, Doubtful or Out. Some players have practice information without a game designation. These fields are related, but one does not substitute for another.

| Report information | What it tells you | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Injury description | The injury information listed for the player. | It does not by itself establish whether the player will play. |
| Practice participation | Whether the player participated fully, on a limited basis or not at all in the listed practice. | It is not a final playing decision or a guarantee of playing time. |
| Game status | The team’s listed designation for the game, when one is given. | Do not replace a current game designation with an earlier practice note. |
The NFL’s 2017 injury-report policy says: “To avoid confusion, the club’s Practice Report and its Game Status Report should be clearly separated when disseminating the information to the media.” That policy is useful context; check the current report and schedule guidance for the latest weekly details.
#1 Best Overall
A missed or limited practice does not always mean a player is injured. The official report can identify a non-injury reason, such as “Not injury related – resting player.” Read any such annotation rather than treating the participation entry as an injury diagnosis or an indication the player is out.

Reporting deadlines vary with the scheduled game day. The NFL’s 2026-27 reporting schedule generally calls for reports by 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. For a Sunday game, it lists practice reports on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with the Game Status Report on Friday. Other game days follow different filing schedules, so check the applicable day rather than assuming every team reports on the same timetable.
Rank #2
The 2026 schedule guidance also requires a club to report an update if a player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report. An earlier report can therefore become stale. Recheck the official report close to the game, especially if the player has no definitive game designation or the situation remains uncertain.

A practical lineup-checking sequence
- Open the right report: identify the player’s team, game week and scheduled game day, then use the NFL report for that week.
- Read each field on its own: note the injury description, practice participation and game status separately. Check for a non-injury annotation.
- Use the correct filing schedule: consult the NFL’s schedule guidance for that game day and remember that a later condition change may prompt an update.
- Refresh near kickoff: use the latest official report available before the player’s game. If the decision remains unclear, check the team’s latest communication too.
- Make the lineup decision by your league’s deadline: use the newest information you can access and follow your league’s rules. An injury report is not a forecast of fantasy points or playing time.
