The quickest way to see what is using space is to open Settings > Storage, then tap the category taking up the most room. Android shows a category-level breakdown, but the labels and available cleanup actions differ between phone makers, Android versions and storage configurations. If you cannot find the menu, use Settings search for Storage.
For a file-by-file investigation, use your phone’s Files app or Files by Google. It can show used and available capacity, let you browse categories and sort items by size, date or name. Check what a file is before deleting it, and move important items to a computer or confirm a backup first.

Start with Settings > Storage
Android’s built-in Storage screen is the best first check because it gives you an overview without requiring another app. Google’s general instructions are Settings > Storage; tap a category to see more detail. The exact wording, order and actions can change with the phone manufacturer and Android release, so do not expect every device to show identical screens. See Google’s current guidance at Free up storage on your Android device.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage. If it is not visible, use the Settings search field and enter Storage.
- Review the category breakdown and identify the largest category.
- Tap that category to open its details and available actions.
This first screen answers “what type of data is taking space?” It may separate apps, images or videos, audio, downloads and other categories, although the names and grouping are device-specific. Treat the displayed categories as an investigation map rather than a universal Android standard: a manufacturer can group data differently, and some entries may represent system-managed space that cannot be removed directly.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

When apps are the largest category
Open the apps section and look for applications with unusually large storage figures. An app’s total can include the application itself, downloaded content and data it has created. Before removing anything, open the app and look for an in-app option to delete downloads, media or other data. Google specifically recommends trying to delete data from inside the app before using Android’s storage controls.
If an app is no longer needed, uninstalling it removes the app and its locally stored data. If you need it occasionally, Android’s automatic app-archiving feature can remove an infrequently used app while retaining its personal data and leaving its icon. The app can be downloaded again if it remains available on Google Play. Google notes that some cleanup steps, including certain archiving options, apply only on Android 14 and newer; your phone may not offer them on an earlier release. The Android Help overview is at support.google.com/android/answer/7431795.
When photos and videos are large
Do not delete images merely because they appear in a cleanup suggestion. First confirm that the photos or videos are backed up and that you are comfortable removing the device copy. Android’s documented cleanup route includes removing backed-up photos from the phone, but the selection still needs review. If an item exists only on the handset, deleting it may be irreversible.
When downloads or offline media are large
Downloaded files often belong to the app that downloaded them. For example, an offline video, map area or music cache may be managed inside that service rather than as an ordinary document. Open the relevant app and remove its offline content there when possible. This keeps the app’s own records consistent and avoids deleting a file whose purpose is unclear.
When “Other” or system storage is prominent
Some phones combine several types of data under labels such as “Other,” “System” or “Miscellaneous.” Those labels are not identical across manufacturers. Tap the category for any details the phone provides, then use a file manager to inspect user-created files. Avoid deleting system folders or files simply because their names are unfamiliar; concentrate on personal files, downloads and app content you can identify.
Inspect individual files with a file manager
A category total tells you where to look, but a file manager shows which individual items create that total. You can use the phone maker’s built-in Files app, or Files by Google where it is available. Google’s help states that Files by Google works on Android 8.0 and newer, although installation and individual features can still vary by device. See How to use Files by Google.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
See used and available space in Files by Google
- Open Files by Google.
- Tap Menu.
- Tap Clean.
- Read the storage summary at the top of the screen. It shows used and available device space; an SD card may also be listed when it is recognized.
Google cautions that an SD card configured as internal storage may not appear in this Files by Google view even when the card is recognized elsewhere in Settings. If the card is missing from the Files screen, check the Storage page in Settings before assuming the card or its contents are unavailable. The storage-display instructions are documented at Check storage space.

Browse a category and sort by size
Open a category in the file manager to see its contents. Sort by size first when your goal is to find the largest files; sort by date to locate old items, or by name when you know part of a filename. Sorting does not delete or alter anything, so it is a safe way to build a list of candidates before deciding what to remove. The available categories, app name and controls can differ in a manufacturer-supplied Files app. Google’s file-management instructions are at Find and delete files on Android.
Settings or Files by Google: which view should you use?
| Need | Settings > Storage | Files by Google or another Files app |
|---|---|---|
| Quick overview | Shows a category-level breakdown using the phone’s built-in controls. | Shows used and available capacity, with the display varying by app and device. |
| Find a particular large item | Usually points you to a broad category. | Browse files and sort by size, date or name. |
| Check an SD card | Useful when a card is configured as internal storage or is not shown in the file app. | An SD card may appear when recognized; it may be absent from the Files by Google storage summary when configured as internal storage. |
| Availability | Part of Android, though labels and paths vary by manufacturer. | Files by Google supports Android 8.0 and newer according to Google; a phone maker’s file app may have different functions. |
Use Settings first to identify the broad source of the problem. Switch to a file manager only when you need to inspect, sort or move individual items.
How to investigate large files safely
- Record the category. In Settings, note which category is unusually large and open it for details.
- Open the matching location. In the Files app, select the corresponding category or folder.
- Sort by size. Large videos, archives, installers and downloaded media become easier to identify when sorted from largest to smallest.
- Open or preview before deleting. Confirm the file’s name, location and contents. A familiar extension does not prove that a file is disposable.
- Check whether an app owns it. If the item is offline media or an app-created download, remove it through that app first.
- Back up or transfer anything important. Copy personal files to a computer or another confirmed backup location before removal.
- Delete in small batches. Recheck the Storage screen after each group so you can tell which action recovered space.
Files by Google can present suggestions for junk files and other cleanup items. Google warns that deleting through the app is permanent, so review every selection rather than accepting a suggestion blindly. The relevant guidance is Clear your junk files.
Clear cache is not the same as clear storage
Android’s app-storage controls use similar-sounding commands with very different consequences. Treat them as separate decisions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Control | What it removes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Temporary data created by the app. | The app may take longer to open the next time while it recreates temporary files. Your account data and normal app records are not intentionally erased by this command. |
| Clear storage | All data stored for that app on the phone. | This is a permanent deletion of the app’s local data. You may need to sign in again, restore settings or redownload content. |
Google advises trying to delete data from within the app first. Do not present Clear storage as a routine, harmless cleanup button: use it only when you understand what local data will be lost and have checked any backup or account-sync implications. See Google’s storage instructions at Free up storage on your Android device.

Alternatives to deleting files
Remove only the device copy of backed-up photos
If a photo service confirms that selected photos are backed up, you can remove the device copies to reclaim local space. Verify the backup status and the exact selection first. A backup that has not completed, or a photo excluded from backup, does not meet this condition.
Delete offline downloads inside the downloading app
Use the app that created an offline download to remove it. This is preferable to deleting an unfamiliar file from a generic folder because the app can update its own download list and preserve other settings.
Archive an infrequently used app
Where your Android version offers app archiving, archiving removes the app while keeping its personal data and icon. You can download it again if it is still available on Google Play. Feature availability is not universal, and Google identifies some cleanup actions as Android 14-and-newer features.
Transfer files to a computer
Android Help documents moving files and folders to a computer over USB and then deleting the phone copies. Use a cable that supports data transfer and has connectors compatible with both devices; a cable that only charges will not provide the required file connection. The supported procedure is described at Find and delete files on Android.
- Connect the phone to the computer with a compatible USB data cable.
- Unlock the phone and select the phone’s file-transfer option if Android presents a USB notification.
- On the computer, open the phone’s storage and copy the chosen files or folders to a location you can access.
- Open several copied files to verify that the transfer succeeded.
- Only then delete the original phone copies and recheck Storage.
Connector type, USB behavior and data-transfer support depend on the phone, computer and cable. If the phone does not appear, try another compatible data cable or consult the device maker’s instructions rather than deleting files without a verified copy.
Troubleshoot when the numbers do not make sense
The menu is missing
Search Settings for Storage. Manufacturers can rename or relocate the page, but the built-in Settings search often finds it even when the category is not where a general Android guide expects.

Files by Google shows less than Settings
Compare like with like: Settings may include system-managed space, while a file app is primarily showing browsable user files. An SD card configured as internal storage may also be omitted from Files by Google’s storage summary. Use Settings as the authoritative first view for the phone’s total and the file manager for inspectable items.

A cleanup suggestion would delete something you need
Cancel the suggestion and open the proposed files individually. Google’s cleanup action is permanent, so keep anything that is not clearly disposable, backed up or reproducible.
Space does not return immediately
Return to Settings > Storage after the deletion has finished and allow the phone to recalculate. If the category remains large, sort the corresponding file category again and investigate the next-largest items instead of repeatedly clearing app data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision checklist
- Have you opened Settings > Storage and identified the largest category?
- Did you check the category’s details instead of deleting from the top-level screen?
- Did you sort candidate files by size and inspect what each one contains?
- Is the item an app download that should be removed inside the app?
- Is a photo or document backed up, or have you copied it to a computer?
- Are you choosing Clear cache rather than Clear storage when you only need to remove temporary data?
- Does your Android version support the cleanup feature you are trying to use, particularly if it is an Android 14-and-newer option?
- After deleting or transferring files, did you verify the copy and recheck the Storage screen?
Following that order separates diagnosis from cleanup: first identify the category, then locate the exact files, then choose deletion, archiving or transfer based on what you can safely recover.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check storage on an Android phone?
Open Settings, tap Storage, and review the category breakdown. Tap the largest category for more detail. If Storage is not visible, search for it in Settings; the menu location and labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.
What is taking up space if the Storage screen only shows “Other” or “System”?
Tap the category to see any details your phone provides, then use the Files app or Files by Google to browse personal files and sort them by size. Do not delete unfamiliar system folders simply because their names are unclear.

How do I find the largest files on Android?
Open the phone’s Files app or Files by Google, enter the relevant category, and sort by size. Review each large item before deleting it, especially offline media, app downloads, archives and videos.
What happens if I tap Clear storage instead of Clear cache?
Clear cache removes temporary files. Clear storage permanently deletes all data stored locally for that app, which can sign you out, remove settings and delete offline content. Try deleting data inside the app first and confirm any backup or sync information.
Why is my SD card missing from Files by Google?
Files by Google can show an SD card when it is recognized, but a card configured as internal storage may not appear in that app’s storage summary. Check Settings > Storage to confirm whether Android recognizes it.
Can I free space without deleting my files?
Yes. Remove only backed-up photo copies, delete offline downloads from the app that created them, archive an infrequently used app where supported, or transfer files to a computer over a compatible USB data cable. Verify backups or copied files before removing the phone originals.
The Bottom Line
Start with Settings > Storage to identify the biggest category, then use a Files app and size sorting to locate specific items. Review every candidate, remove app downloads from inside their apps, distinguish Clear cache from Clear storage, and back up or transfer anything important before permanent deletion. Android 14 features, Files by Google availability and menu labels vary by device.
