How to Find Free Satellite Images for a Location

Use NASA Worldview for quick previews, EarthExplorer for Landsat downloads, and Copernicus Data Space for Sentinel collections. The right choice depends on whether you need a visual, source data, or analysis—and reuse rights vary by image.

To find free satellite images for a location, use NASA Worldview to browse and preview imagery, USGS EarthExplorer to select and download Landsat scenes, or Copernicus Data Space to access Sentinel collections. Choose based on whether you need a quick visual, a downloadable image dataset, or data to analyze; then check the specific image’s date, coverage, and reuse terms.

Choose the right place to start

“Satellite images of my area” can mean two different things: a map-like view to inspect a place, or the underlying satellite data to download and work with. A visual browser is usually the faster route for a first look. A data portal is better when you need to choose a scene by date and area, download source data, or conduct analysis.

What you need Start here Why
Quickly preview a location or compare dates NASA Worldview NASA describes it as a tool to browse, preview, and download global satellite imagery and create animations.
Find and download Landsat scenes USGS EarthExplorer You can define an area, set a date range, select Landsat or other datasets, and download Landsat archive products at no cost.
Access Sentinel mission collections Copernicus Data Space It is an official starting point for Sentinel data.
Search or work with location- and time-specific Earth data NASA Earthdata Search or AppEEARS NASA lists these as options for searching and working with Earth data, including subset and analysis workflows.

Free access does not mean that every portal provides the same kind of image or that every dataset is equally suited to every task. A browser preview may be enough to answer “what does this area look like?” A download may be necessary for measurements, processing, or keeping a particular source dataset. The right choice depends on the intended use, not just the place.

How to preview a location in NASA Worldview

Use Worldview when you want to look at imagery first, inspect a date or layer, or create a visual sequence. NASA describes the service as covering global imagery and supporting browsing, previewing, downloading, and animation. Its preview is a convenient way to explore; it should not automatically be treated as a full-resolution analysis download.

  1. Open NASA Worldview and search for the place you want to inspect. If place-name search does not identify the right spot, enter the location’s coordinates.
  2. Choose an imagery layer relevant to your question. The portal contains different layers; selecting one is part of the search, not a cosmetic setting. Confirm what the chosen layer represents in its collection information.
  3. Choose a date and inspect the resulting view. If the question concerns change, compare dates rather than assuming one image represents a typical or current condition.
  4. Adjust the view to confirm that the imagery covers the intended location. Place names can refer to broad areas or multiple places, so check the map position rather than relying on the search text alone.
  5. Preview, download, or create an animation if the available layer and workflow support the task. If you need source data for analysis, move to a data search or subset tool and verify the product details instead of assuming the preview is sufficient.

This route is well suited to orientation and visual inspection. If your decision depends on a particular acquisition, a specific dataset, or analysis-ready pixels, identify the exact layer and product and obtain the appropriate data through a data portal or analysis tool.

How to find and download Landsat imagery in USGS EarthExplorer

EarthExplorer is the practical starting point when you want to search for Landsat scenes over a defined area and date range. USGS states that Landsat archive products in its EROS archive have been available for download at no cost since 2008. That statement concerns those archive products; it does not establish that every satellite image available elsewhere has the same access or licensing terms.

  1. Set the search area. EarthExplorer supports defining an area with a point or polygon, or searching with an address, ZIP code, or place name. Use a point for a small target and a polygon when the boundary of the area matters.
  2. Set the date range. A narrower range can make it easier to find a scene relevant to a specific event or period; a wider range helps when you are building a historical sequence.
  3. Select Landsat or another dataset in the portal. Confirm the collection and product details shown for the results; a search result is not simply a generic satellite photograph.
  4. Review the returned scenes and their metadata. Check the acquisition date and spatial coverage against the intended location and time period. Consult the collection’s current metadata for details that matter to your use.
  5. Download the product you need. If the purpose is visual inspection only, a preview may answer the question. If you plan to process or analyze imagery, make sure you have selected the downloadable data product required for that work.

Landsat is particularly useful when the historical record matters. NASA reports systematic global Landsat coverage since 1972. That is the start of the program’s systematic global observation record, not a guarantee that every place has a usable, cloud-free image for every date since then. Availability and suitability still depend on the exact scene and collection.

How to find Sentinel imagery and other location-specific data

For Sentinel mission data, begin with Copernicus Data Space, the official entry point identified for Sentinel collections. Search the relevant collection and check its product metadata for coverage, date, and other characteristics before deciding whether it fits your task.

NASA also lists Earthdata Search and AppEEARS for searching and working with Earth data tied to locations and time periods. These are useful alternatives when your need goes beyond opening a map view—for example, when you need to identify data for an area and period or work with a subset or analysis workflow. The right tool depends on the collection and the output you need; the portal name alone does not tell you that a product is suitable.

NASA’s Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) dataset combines observations from Landsat and Sentinel-2. NASA reports a global observation interval of every 1.6 days for HLS. That figure describes the dataset’s global observation interval. It is not a promise of a cloud-free, usable image at a particular location on a particular day, nor does it guarantee the same interval for every individual mission or product. Check the actual data and metadata for the target area and dates.

Find imagery by address, place name, or coordinates

If you want free satellite images by address, begin with a portal that supports address or place-name searches. EarthExplorer explicitly supports an address, ZIP code, or place name for defining a search area. Worldview supports searching by place or entering coordinates. If a portal does not accept an address, coordinates or a mapped point or polygon can make the intended location unambiguous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Address: Convenient when the portal accepts it, but confirm that the search landed on the intended property or neighborhood.
  • Place name: Useful for towns, regions, or landmarks. Broad or duplicated names may point to the wrong location, so inspect the map position.
  • Coordinates: A precise option when you already know the target point. Check the coordinate order and the point on the map before continuing.
  • Polygon: Best when you need to search an area with a particular boundary rather than a single point. Confirm that the drawn boundary includes the entire target area.

For a large area, one point may not adequately express what you mean by “my location.” Use a polygon or other area-selection method where available, and verify the returned scene’s coverage. The search location tells the portal where to look; it does not by itself guarantee that a selected image covers the whole area you care about.

Preview, download, or analyze: know which result you need

A common source of confusion is treating every screen that looks like satellite imagery as an interchangeable image file. There are distinct stages: visual browsing, searching for a particular product, downloading data, and working with a subset or analysis output. NASA distinguishes its browsing and preview functions from data search, subsetting, and analysis tools.

  • Choose a preview when you need a quick visual check and the displayed layer answers your question.
  • Choose a scene download when you need a specific acquisition and source product for later use. Confirm the dataset, date, coverage, and product details before downloading.
  • Choose a subset or analysis workflow when you need data for a particular area, time period, or layer and do not want to treat a map preview as the analytical input.

Before downloading, be clear about what you will do with the result. A screenshot or rendered preview, a source data product, and a processed subset are not necessarily the same deliverable. If you need a result that can be measured or processed, use the collection’s documentation and the portal’s data workflow to identify the appropriate product.

Understand dates, history, and observation intervals

For a current-looking image, select the most recent relevant observation available for the chosen collection and then inspect its acquisition date. “Latest” is collection- and location-dependent, and the newest observation may not be visually useful for a particular question. A date filter helps narrow the search, but it does not guarantee a clear view or a scene that meets your needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For historical change, Landsat offers a long baseline: NASA reports systematic global coverage since 1972. Search across the dates relevant to your question and review the actual results. Do not assume that a single image from a year represents the whole year, or that every date in the historical range has an observation suitable for comparison.

For HLS, the reported every-1.6-days interval is a global observation interval for the harmonized dataset. It does not describe a guaranteed cloud-free revisit at each location. Clouds, acquisition timing, and the selected collection affect whether an image is useful for a specific date and purpose. Treat the interval as context for the dataset, then check the scene or product metadata.

Check image rights before reuse

Free access to a portal does not establish identical reuse rights for all imagery found there. The USGS warns that commercial satellite image licensing can vary by image. Before redistributing an image, using it commercially, or incorporating it into a publication or product, check the terms attached to the exact record or dataset and any applicable conditions.

  • Identify the specific image or data product, not just the portal where you found it.
  • Read the collection or record’s current licensing and attribution information.
  • Confirm that your intended activity—such as commercial use, public redistribution, or modification—is covered.
  • Retain any attribution or other notices required by the applicable terms.

If the terms for a particular image are unclear, do not infer permission from the fact that the portal let you preview or download it. Check the record’s conditions before reuse.

Common problems and how to resolve them

The search finds the wrong place

Check the map position and refine the search with coordinates or a polygon. A place name may be broad or ambiguous; an address may resolve to a nearby point rather than the area you intended.

The image does not cover the whole area

Inspect the scene footprint or coverage information, and search with an area boundary if the portal supports one. A point search identifies a target, but the returned product still needs to be checked for full coverage.

The preview is not enough for the task

Move from the visual browser to the data portal or subset and analysis workflow. Verify that the selected product is a data download suitable for your intended work rather than assuming that the preview itself is the full analysis input.

The image date is not the date you expected

Confirm the acquisition date shown in the product record and adjust the date range. A map that displays a place does not necessarily represent the latest observation or a specific event date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find a usable image for the exact date

Widen the date range and inspect the returned observations. An observation interval does not promise a cloud-free image on the date you want; use the actual collection metadata and imagery to judge suitability.

You are unsure whether you can republish or sell the image

Check the terms for the exact dataset or image record. Portal access alone is not proof of a blanket reuse license, particularly where commercial imagery may have image-level restrictions.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need to see the area quickly? Start with NASA Worldview and search by place or coordinates.
  • Need a Landsat scene to download? Use USGS EarthExplorer, define the area, choose a date range, and select the dataset.
  • Need Sentinel data? Start with Copernicus Data Space and inspect the selected collection’s metadata.
  • Need a subset or location-and-time workflow? Consider NASA Earthdata Search or AppEEARS and confirm the output matches the job.
  • Need a historical sequence? Consider Landsat’s systematic global record beginning in 1972, then inspect the actual scenes available for your location and dates.
  • Need frequent combined observations? HLS combines Landsat and Sentinel-2, with NASA reporting a global observation interval of every 1.6 days; check the target location’s actual data rather than treating this as a clear-image guarantee.
  • Need to reuse the result? Read the exact image or dataset terms before redistribution or commercial use.
