Identify what is growing and what still owns it, fix that retention or release defect, and repeat the workload to verify the trend has stopped. A rising process-memory number or an OutOfMemoryError is a clue, not proof of a leak.
How can I tell if my application has a memory leak?
Start with a baseline after startup has settled. Record the workload, elapsed time, and the relevant memory or resource counters, then repeat observations under comparable load. A temporary increase during allocation is normal; the important question is whether the amount that remains in use continues to climb across comparable cycles.

In Java, track the live set: heap space or Metaspace still in use after a full garbage collection. Oracle’s Java SE 26 guidance says to monitor that post-collection amount; a sustained rise under stable conditions is stronger evidence of a leak than a rising process total alone. Oracle’s Java SE 26 troubleshooting guide explains this method.
On Windows, Microsoft recommends first establishing whether a trend exists with Performance Monitor, then choosing an investigation path based on the resource and whether the suspected leak is in user mode or kernel mode. For an application baseline, Microsoft calls out Commit Size, Handles, User Objects, and GDI Objects as useful counters; none should be treated as a universal measure of all memory use. - Keep the workload and observation interval as similar as possible between measurements.
- Separate startup or workload-related spikes from growth that persists after cleanup.
- Record which pool or resource is changing, rather than relying on one generic process-memory value.
- Compare several cycles; one snapshot cannot establish a trend.
What causes an OutOfMemoryError?
An OutOfMemoryError means an allocation could not be satisfied; it does not by itself establish that objects are leaking. Oracle identifies several possibilities to distinguish: an undersized Java heap or Metaspace, native-memory exhaustion, a large allocation, or excessive finalization. Check the error details and the affected memory pool before changing code or raising a limit. See Oracle’s Java SE 26 troubleshooting documentation.

A larger heap may be appropriate when evidence shows that the application’s legitimate working set exceeds its configured capacity. It can also delay failure without removing unintended retention, so treat capacity tuning and leak correction as separate decisions.
How do I find a memory leak?
- Reproduce and measure. Choose a representative workload, let startup settle, and record the relevant counters at consistent intervals. Note the runtime or operating-system context and the point at which growth occurs.
- Identify the memory domain. In Java, distinguish heap, Metaspace, and native memory. On Windows, establish whether the evidence points to a user-mode application or a kernel-mode driver/component, and identify the resource type.
- Collect evidence during the growth period. Capture diagnostics while the workload that triggers the issue is running, so the recording includes the allocations and retention in question.
- Find what remains retained or unreleased. Compare object or resource counts across similar cycles, then trace the owners, references, or allocation/release paths associated with the growth.
- Change the responsible lifecycle or ownership behavior. Correct the code that unintentionally keeps objects reachable or fails to release the identified resource. If the working set is legitimate, evaluate capacity separately.
- Repeat the same workload and measurement. Compare the same post-GC live set or platform resource counters. A restart or a higher memory limit is not evidence that the underlying trend is fixed.
Java: capture and interpret leak evidence
Oracle documents JDK Mission Control (JMC) and Java Flight Recorder (JFR) as a route for investigating Java memory leaks. Record the period in which the workload exhibits growth, then inspect live-object trends, allocation stacks, and paths to garbage-collection roots. Allocation stacks show where objects were created; paths to GC roots help explain why objects that might otherwise be collectible remain reachable. Oracle notes that collecting GC-root paths can add overhead comparable to a full garbage collection, so consider that cost when choosing when to collect the evidence. A heap histogram is a quicker way to narrow the search to classes whose instance counts or occupied space merit investigation; it does not, by itself, prove that those instances are leaked. Oracle’s Java SE 24 guide also discusses heap histograms and tools including Eclipse Memory Analyzer and YourKit as examples, not as a comparative ranking or endorsement: Oracle Java SE 24: Troubleshoot Memory Leaks.
Follow a growing class back to its retaining path. Oracle illustrates how objects can enter a HashSet through a login flow and remain there if entries are not removed when users log out. That is an example of a lifecycle defect, not a universal cause: the relevant fix depends on the actual reference path in your application.
When comparing Java diagnostic options, check whether each exposes the memory domain you need, shows live-set trends, records allocation stacks and reference paths, imposes collection overhead, and supports the deployed runtime. The cited Oracle material documents JMC/JFR and histograms but does not establish a benchmark winner among tools.

Windows: investigate the resource that is growing
Use Performance Monitor to confirm and characterize the trend before choosing a deeper route, as described by Microsoft’s Windows leak-finding guidance. Monitor the resource implicated by the evidence rather than assuming every leak is a heap leak: Windows application and driver issues can involve heap allocations, virtual allocations, handles, or GDI/USER resources.

- Kernel-mode driver or component: use the kernel-mode investigation path rather than applying user-mode application assumptions. The allocation domain and diagnostic route differ.
Microsoft’s prevention material describes these resource categories and their lifecycles, but it belongs to a legacy Windows 7 application-qualification path. Use it for the general allocation/release concepts, not as assurance that every detail or API applies unchanged to a current Windows product: Preventing Memory Leaks in Windows Applications.
Native memory: diagnose it separately from managed objects
If Java heap and Metaspace measurements do not account for increasing process memory, investigate native memory with operating-system tools appropriate to the platform. Compare repeated measurements to locate growing regions, then inspect the corresponding native allocation and release paths. Oracle notes that there is no single ideal native-code leak diagnostic for every platform, so the right tool depends on the runtime and operating system: Oracle Java SE 26 troubleshooting.

Fix the ownership or lifecycle defect identified by the evidence: remove unintended references that keep objects reachable, or make sure the relevant resource is released along the actual exit and failure paths. The right change depends on what is retained and why; changing a heap limit does not perform that cleanup.

- Give long-lived owners a clear policy for removing short-lived objects when their work ends.
- Pair resource acquisition with release in the same lifecycle, including error and cancellation paths.
- Where resource counts are relevant, monitor them alongside memory instead of assuming the process total will reveal the leak.
- Make the reproducing workload and its baseline repeatable so a future change can be checked against the same behavior.
After a code or configuration change, run the representative workload again and compare the same post-collection live set or resource counters over comparable cycles. If growth stops, retain the measurements and the workload details as a regression baseline; if it continues, the observed trend or retaining path has not yet been resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a memory leak always mean memory usage rises continuously?
Not necessarily. A leak may be limited to a particular workload or resource, and growth can be obscured by capacity limits or measurement noise. Look for a repeatable increase in the relevant post-cleanup resource under comparable conditions.
Should I increase the heap when Java reports an OutOfMemoryError?
Only after identifying which pool failed and whether the application’s legitimate working set needs more capacity. Increasing heap will not release objects retained unintentionally.
