To find an element inside an iframe, identify its Puppeteer Frame, then create a locator from that frame: frame.locator(selector). A locator created with page.locator() targets the main document, not the iframe’s document.
Identify the frame that contains the element
Puppeteer exposes the page’s frame tree through page.mainFrame(), page.frames(), and Frame.childFrames(). Start with page.frames() when the frame can be identified by a stable URL or iframe attribute. If frames are nested, locate the child frame under its parent and use that child’s locator.

Find a frame by URL
A URL match can be convenient, but use a stable identifying part of the URL that fits your page. This example checks whether a frame URL contains /embedded-form:
Recommended Free Tools
const frame = page.frames().find(candidate => candidate.url().includes('/embedded-form'));
if (!frame) throw new Error('Target frame not found');
await frame.locator('input[name="email"]').fill('[email protected]');
await frame.locator('button[type="submit"]').click();
Find a frame by its iframe element’s name
If the page provides a useful name or id on the iframe element, inspect the element associated with each frame. The Frame.name() method is deprecated; reading the attribute from frameElement() avoids relying on it.

let targetFrame;
for (const candidate of page.frames()) {
if (candidate === page.mainFrame()) continue;
const element = await candidate.frameElement();
const name = await element.evaluate(el => el.getAttribute('name'));
if (name === 'payment-frame') {
targetFrame = candidate;
break;
}
}
if (!targetFrame) throw new Error('Payment frame not found');
await targetFrame.locator('input[name="cardnumber"]').fill('…');
Attribute-based selection only works when the page has an attribute that identifies the intended iframe reliably. A frame can also navigate or detach as the page changes. If an action follows a navigation or other major transition, reacquire or validate the frame rather than assuming the old reference still points to the intended document.
Use a locator inside the frame
Once you have the right Frame, call frame.locator(). The selector is evaluated in that frame’s document. Puppeteer locators support CSS selectors and additional selector syntax for text, accessibility roles and names, XPath, and combinations that cross shadow roots.

await targetFrame.locator('button.continue').click();
await targetFrame.locator('::-p-aria([name="Continue"][role="button"])').click();
Choose a selector that matches the page’s DOM or accessibility tree and uniquely identifies the intended control. The examples show CSS and accessibility selector syntax; they are alternatives, not two clicks you normally need to perform.
Why use a locator for interaction?
Puppeteer recommends locators for selecting and interacting with page elements. Locator actions wait for the element to be present and check relevant action preconditions. For a click, Puppeteer checks that the element is in the viewport, visible, and enabled, and that its bounding box remains stable across two animation frames.

Use a frame query for a one-off lookup
If you only need to inspect a matching element or read a value, frame-scoped query methods are available. frame.$(selector) returns the first matching element handle, or null if none matches. frame.$eval(selector, fn) runs a function on the first matching element.
const handle = await targetFrame.$('h1');
if (!handle) throw new Error('Heading not found');
const text = await handle.evaluate(element => element.textContent);
These lower-level methods are useful for custom work or immediate queries, but they do not provide locator interaction behavior by default. For interactions where waiting and readiness checks matter, prefer a locator.

Troubleshoot frame locator failures
- The locator cannot find the element: Check that you selected the intended frame, then confirm the selector against that frame’s document. A selector passed to
page.locator()searches the main document instead. - No frame matched: Verify the URL fragment or iframe attribute used for selection. If the frame is nested, search among the correct parent’s child frames.
- The operation fails after navigation: The frame may have navigated or detached. Reacquire or validate it after the transition before locating or interacting.
- A query returns
nullor throws for a missing match: Check the result offrame.$()before using the handle, as in the example above. Use a locator when you need its interaction waiting behavior. - The code does not run with the installed Puppeteer version: Check the API and method signature against your project’s installed version. The documented Frame locator page is for Puppeteer 25.9.0, while the Frame API and interaction guide are for 25.12.0; other documentation pages appear at 25.10.0 or 25.12.0.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than interact with an iframe, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. Its API documentation covers the request options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an accessibility selector inside an iframe?
Yes. Call the accessibility selector through the iframe’s Frame, for example targetFrame.locator('::-p-aria([name="Continue"][role="button"])').
Does Frame.name() update if the iframe name changes?
No. Its documented value is calculated when the frame is created. Inspect the iframe element’s name or id attribute with frame.frameElement() instead.
