Whether you can find a “deleted” Messenger conversation depends on what happened to it. A chat missing from your main list may simply be hidden or archived; a message deliberately deleted is different; and history missing after changing phones may be restorable if it was saved in Messenger Secure Storage. Meta documents restoration of encrypted history from Secure Storage, but the cited guidance does not establish a way to undelete ordinary messages.
First identify what “deleted” means
Messenger users can mean three different things when they say messages are deleted:

- The conversation is missing from the chat list. It may be hidden or archived rather than deleted. Archive and delete are not interchangeable. The exact current archive navigation was not verified here, so do not assume a particular folder or menu path.
- A message or conversation was deliberately deleted. Meta’s cited guidance does not confirm an ordinary recovery or “undelete” option for content removed from an account.
- Chat history disappeared after changing or reinstalling a device. If encrypted history was saved to Secure Storage and the required recovery method is available, restoration may be possible.
Restore encrypted chat history on a new device
Meta says that Messenger chat history saved in Secure Storage can be restored on a new device using the PIN, provided Secure Storage was enabled. See Meta’s instructions for restoring end-to-end encrypted chats with a PIN. The linked Help Center page is in French; Messenger’s screens and available recovery options can vary by device, language, and feature rollout, so follow the current in-app prompts for your account.

This is a backup restore, not evidence that a message deliberately deleted from Messenger can be brought back. If Secure Storage was not enabled or you do not have the recovery method it requires, the cited Meta guidance does not establish another way to restore that encrypted history.

Do not delete Secure Storage while trying to recover chats
Deleting Secure Storage is not a recovery step. Meta warns that “When you delete your secure storage, your encrypted chat history will be permanently deleted,” and says, “Messenger can’t reset your security method or restore your backup for you.” Read Meta’s guidance on resetting the security method for end-to-end encryption before changing or deleting storage.
Ask another participant if the sender deleted their Facebook account
If the sender deleted their Facebook account, a copy of messages they sent may still be in the recipient’s inbox. Meta says, “Copies of messages that you have sent are stored in your friends’ inboxes.” You can ask the other participant whether the conversation remains visible to them. That may provide access to their copy; it does not restore a deleted conversation to your own Messenger account. See Meta’s account-deletion guidance.

What downloading your Facebook information can—and cannot—do
Meta’s Download Your Information controls let people choose information categories and date ranges, but the cited page does not say that an export recovers Messenger messages deleted from the account. Treat it as a way to download information Meta makes available, not as a deleted-message recovery guarantee. Meta’s information-download guidance describes those selections.
There is a separate instruction for Facebook Community chats scheduled for permanent deletion: Meta tells users to download their information from the notice in Messenger before deletion. Third-party recovery tools are not equivalent to Meta’s documented Secure Storage restore. The cited material does not substantiate claims that an outside service can retrieve deleted server-side Messenger content.
