Start by checking which messaging app you used. In Samsung Messages, a deleted text may still be in More options > Trash for up to 30 days if Trash is enabled. In Google Messages, check Profile > Archived: archived conversations can be restored, but Samsung says messages deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted. If neither app has the conversation, recovery depends on a backup made before deletion.
First, identify the messaging app and what happened to the conversation
Open the app where you normally text and check whether it is Samsung Messages or Google Messages. The recovery steps differ, and a conversation that was archived is not the same as one that was deleted. Samsung’s menus can also vary by phone model and software version, so use the labels available on your device.

- Samsung Messages: check Trash for deleted messages.
- Google Messages: check Archived in case the conversation was moved rather than deleted.
- Neither location has it: check whether a Samsung Cloud, Google account, or Smart Switch backup from before deletion includes the messages.
Recover a deleted message from Samsung Messages Trash
- Open Samsung Messages.
- Tap More options (the three dots), then tap Trash.
- Touch and hold the message you want to recover.
- Tap Restore. Samsung also documents options to select multiple messages or choose Restore all.
Samsung Support says accidentally deleted messages can be restored from Samsung Messages Trash within 30 days. The route works only if Trash is available and enabled on your phone and the message is still there; the 30-day period is the retention window Samsung gives, not a guarantee that every deleted message will be recoverable.

Check Google Messages Archived before trying a backup
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap the Profile icon, then tap Archived.
- Select the conversation and tap Unarchive.
Samsung Support distinguishes archived conversations from deleted ones: it says, “Text messages deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered; however, archived text can.” That describes recovery through Google Messages’ documented process; it does not establish that a message can be recovered from an older backup.

Restore messages from a backup made before deletion
A backup restore can bring back messages only if the backup actually contains them. Check its date and contents before replacing or resetting phone data. Restoring an older backup may affect data created since that backup, so read the prompts on your device before confirming.
Samsung Cloud
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Restore data.
- Choose the relevant device backup.
- Select Messages and follow the restore prompts.
Samsung says availability depends on the device and service region. The path restores backed-up data; it cannot add a message that was not captured in the backup.

Google account backup
Samsung says Google account-backed-up messages can be restored during setup of a new phone or after a factory reset. Its guidance says the destination phone must run the same or a newer Android version than the one associated with the backup. Because this method can require setup or a reset, first confirm that a relevant backup exists and understand what else may be affected before proceeding.

Samsung documents restoring or transferring Smart Switch data from another phone, a PC or Mac backup, or external storage such as an SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD. Choose the backup containing the messages and follow Smart Switch’s transfer or restore prompts on the phone.

- Messages in a computer backup file cannot be read on the computer; Samsung says they can be read after transfer to a phone.
- A USB flash drive or SSD may need an OTG adapter, depending on the phone and connection.
- External storage and Smart Switch provide a route to use an existing backup; they do not recover messages by themselves.
Why Samsung Messages may not be on your Galaxy phone
Samsung Messages is not installed or available in the same way on every Galaxy model. Samsung India’s support article, last updated March 18, 2026, says Samsung Messages is not pre-installed on Galaxy S25 smartphones, that Google Messages can be used instead, and that Samsung Messages availability may vary by software version and model. This is India-specific guidance, not a universal statement about every region. Check the app currently installed on your phone and its menus rather than assuming another Galaxy model has the same setup.
If there is no Trash copy, archive, or suitable backup
The reviewed Samsung guidance does not establish a reliable way to recover permanently deleted messages when they are absent from Trash or Archive and no pre-deletion backup contains them. It also does not support a recovery success rate for third-party tools. Be cautious of software that promises guaranteed recovery; do not grant access to private messages or pay based on an unsupported guarantee.
