How do I find data centers near me?
There is no single national index in the sources covered here that establishes every proposed data center and its permits. EPA ECHO is useful for finding existing regulated facilities and reviewing compliance records; state and local agencies may hold project applications, land-use cases, and public notices. A missing ECHO result is not proof that no project or permit exists.

1. Gather names and location details
Write down the city or county, state, ZIP code, and—if known—the street address and parcel number. Also collect possible project or campus names, developer, landowner, utility, and facility names. Projects may be filed under an owner or subsidiary rather than “data center.” Search reasonable name and address variations.

- Open EPA ECHO and use its quick search with a city and state or ZIP code.
- Repeat with the suspected facility name, street address, or a known facility identifier.
- Open relevant facility records and review linked program information, enforcement and compliance history, and available permit details.
ECHO is a facility, compliance, and enforcement search—not a comprehensive index of proposed developments or local zoning cases. For water-discharge records, EPA’s ICIS-NPDES search guide describes searching by geography, facility name or NPDES ID, industrial classification, chemical parameter, and permit issue or expiration date. EPA recommends starting with a small geographic area. Results may include permit dates, facility location, discharge points, and monitored parameters; consult the permit and monitoring documents to understand what each record covers.

How can I look up environmental permits in my county?
Identify the likely issuing authority
Use EPA’s Permitting Authority Map to select the location and relevant program. It can help distinguish direct EPA authority from programs administered by states, territories, Tribal nations, or local agencies. EPA says the map is for planning, is not an official determination, and initially covers a limited set of programs. Ask the listed authority or EPA regional office to confirm jurisdiction.
For a state-level starting point, use EPA’s directory of state and territorial environmental agencies. From there, check whether the program is handled by a delegated regional office, water management district, local air district, Tribal agency, or another authority.

Search state application and document systems
On the relevant agency’s website, look for “permit applications,” “air permits,” “stormwater,” “NPDES,” “wetlands,” “public notices,” and “permit documents.” Search by project name, parcel, applicant, or address. An application-status search and a document archive may be separate, so finding a record does not necessarily mean you have the complete file.

Check local planning records for early proposals
Search the relevant city or county planning department, zoning board, board of supervisors or commissioners, and public-meeting agendas and minutes. Try the project, developer, and parcel name along with terms such as “rezoning,” “special use,” and “site plan.” Ask the planning clerk whether there is a pending land-use case, application, hearing notice, or public file. Local records may surface a proposal before an environmental permit appears in a facility database; office names and record systems vary by locality.
Where can I see permits for a proposed data center?
Search both by location and by project identity, then compare what each record actually represents. A notice, planning case, application, draft permit, issued permit, and operating record are different stages—not interchangeable proof that a facility is approved or operating.

The authority may be EPA or an authorized state, territorial, local, or Tribal agency. Check the specific file and current local rules for generator-related permitting questions.
- Water discharges: NPDES permits regulate facility discharges into waters of the United States and may be individual or general permits. The relevant record can identify the receiving water, discharge points, limits, and monitoring information.
- Wetlands and fill: Clean Water Act Section 404 applies to discharges of dredged or fill material into waters of the United States, including certain wetlands. EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers share aspects of the program. USACE issues permits except where a state or Tribal program has assumed authority.
- Hazardous waste and injection wells: RCRA permits cover facilities that treat, store, or dispose of hazardous waste. The Underground Injection Control program covers specified injection wells. These are possible program categories, not requirements for every data center.
- Land use: Zoning, subdivision, and site-plan proceedings are local records and separate from the environmental permit examples above. Confirm which city or county body has jurisdiction.
A data-center label alone does not establish which permits a project needs. EPA describes permits as setting limits and conditions for emissions, pollutant discharges, and environmental disturbances; read the permit terms and approved plans rather than inferring impacts from a facility name.

How do I check what a permit record actually covers?
For each useful result, note the agency, permit or application ID, applicant, site location, activity covered, status, and key dates. Look for the application and supporting technical documents, not just a map marker or brief search result.

- Record the date received, decision date, public-notice date, and any stated deadline.
- Identify whether the item is an announcement, land-use filing, permit application, draft permit, issued permit, or operating authorization.
- Check the permit’s conditions and approved plans to see what activities and environmental effects it addresses.
- Keep the official docket or permit link with your notes so you can revisit the controlling documents.
How do I find a public hearing or comment deadline?
Use the current agency notice or docket as the controlling record. Confirm the deadline, accepted submission method, docket or permit number, and whether a hearing is scheduled. If a website appears outdated or omits the deadline, contact the person or office listed on the official notice and ask for the current docket and complete application file.
For air permits, the status of a rulemaking can matter. On July 1, 2026, EPA announced a proposed rule to eliminate minimum federal public-participation requirements for state and local minor-source New Source Review programs. EPA said the proposed comment period would be 45 days after Federal Register publication. That announcement does not establish that the proposal became final or that a particular state changed its procedures. Check the current Federal Register docket and the applicable state or local air-agency rules before relying on a deadline.
