No—not from a $Cashtag, according to Cash App’s published guidance. Cash App describes finding recipients by entering a phone number or email address you already have, or by choosing to sync your phone contacts. If you only have someone’s $Cashtag, ask them for the contact information they want to share or verify their identity through a separate trusted channel before paying.
What you can search for in Cash App
Cash App’s documented recipient-finding options start with information you already know or contacts you choose to share with the app:

- Enter a phone number or email address: Use the recipient’s number or email if you already have it. Cash App’s Privacy Notice also says users may choose to let Cash App access and upload phone contacts to make it easier to find people to send money to.
- Sync contacts, optionally: If you choose to enable contact access, Cash App can use your phone contacts to help find people. This is an option, not a way to retrieve contact details for any Cash App user.
The notice describes some information that may be available to other Cash App customers so they can recognize people they transact with, including a user’s name and $Cashtag, prior transaction history, join date, and whether the person appears in someone’s contacts. It does not describe searching for a phone number using a $Cashtag, nor does the cited language establish that a phone number is never visible in every circumstance.

Cash App defines a $Cashtag as a unique username used to identify an account. It is an account identifier, not a reverse phone lookup tool. Cash App’s U.S. Terms of Service describe choosing a unique alphanumeric name to identify yourself on the service; the published materials do not provide a method for turning that name into its owner’s phone number.

If all you have is a $Cashtag, ask the person directly for the phone number or email they want to share. If you are preparing to pay, confirm that the $Cashtag belongs to the intended recipient through a separate trusted channel first.
How to verify a recipient before paying
- Check the recipient details in Cash App. Compare the displayed name and $Cashtag with information you already trust; do not assume a familiar name alone proves identity.
- Verify unexpected requests outside the message thread. If someone you know asks for money unexpectedly, call or message them using a number or account you already know is theirs. The FTC’s mobile-payment advice recommends double-checking recipient information and contacting the person through a separate channel when a request is unexpected.
- Open Cash App directly if something seems suspicious. Do not follow an unsolicited link or rely on a support number included in a suspicious message. Cash App advises using the app or its official website directly.
What to do about a suspicious contact or payment
If a message or contact looks suspicious
Do not send money or share account credentials. Open Cash App directly and use its official support channels. The Terms of Service list in-app chat and 1-800-969-1940 as support methods. Cash App says its representatives will not ask for your password, PIN, or full debit card number.

If you already sent money
In Cash App, open the activity feed, select the payment, and report an issue. You can also report a mobile-payment scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reporting does not guarantee a refund; the FTC warns that money sent through mobile payment apps can be difficult to recover.
