First identify your Kindle model: the Kindle (2026 release) has its power button on the top right side, while Amazon’s setup guides place it on the bottom edge of the Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Colorsoft, and Kindle (11th Generation). A quick press wakes or puts the Kindle to sleep; turning the screen off through the power menu and restarting it use different button holds.
Find the power button on your Kindle model
“New Kindle” can mean different models and generations, and the button is not in the same place on all of them. Check the model name before searching along an edge.

If your Kindle is another generation or you cannot identify it, use Amazon’s Identify Your Kindle E-Reader page to match its features to the model, then open that model’s setup instructions. Amazon notes that not every generation was available in every marketplace.

Press the power button once briefly to wake the Kindle or put it to sleep. Amazon’s battery guidance describes a brief press as the way to put the device to sleep: Conserve Your Kindle E-Reader Battery.

Turn off the screen from the power dialog
On the cited setup pages, turning off the screen requires a longer hold and a menu selection; it is not the same as a brief sleep press.
- Hold the power button for nine seconds, until the power dialog appears.
- Select Screen Off.
Amazon documents this sequence for the Kindle (2026 release), Paperwhite, Colorsoft, and Kindle (11th Generation) in the setup guides linked above. If your controls or dialog differ, check the setup guide for the exact model.

Restart only to recover from a frozen or slow Kindle
A restart is a troubleshooting action, not the routine way to sleep or turn off the screen. Amazon recommends it for problems such as a frozen screen or slow performance.

Don’t confuse the power button with the charging port
The USB-C connection is for charging and file transfer, not the power button. Some Kids Kindle covers can wake or put a compatible device to sleep when opened or closed, but that accessory behavior is not required to use the button.
