The boards are separate: you can have different levels and rolled effects for different pet families. If a board seems incomplete or its labels differ from a guide, verify the displayed genus and your client version before spending resources. AION 2 is regionally updated, and global-facing guides do not establish that every region uses identical labels, caps, prices, or stat pools.
How Pet Insight differs from Genus Insight
The similar names describe connected but distinct progression systems. Pet Insight belongs to an individual pet. Genus Insight belongs to a family of pets and has its own board. Pet collection and development can contribute to that board, but raising one pet is not the same as directly leveling every board.

The distinction is useful when deciding what to do with Souls. If you have not unlocked a pet, collecting its first five Souls adds a new pet to your collection. Which Genus Insight boards are available?
The 2026 guides identify five separately progressing boards: Cogni, Fera, Natura, Varian, and Special. Normal pets are associated with the first four; Special pets use their own board. Do not treat progress on one board as progress shared across all five.
Each board has nine rerollable lines. The guides describe levels 1 through 9 as opening those lines, with level 10 improving roll quality—not opening a tenth line. The board’s level and the lines’ rolled effects are therefore different things: leveling opens the slots, while analysis rerolls their effects. In practical terms, getting a board to level 10 is not a way to add another slot; it is a milestone for improving the quality of effects you can pursue on its existing nine lines.
This also explains why leveling and optimization are best treated as two phases. Early board progress gives you access to the lines, while later analysis is used to seek effects that fit your character. If you spend heavily to preserve early rolls, you may be paying a premium before reaching the level at which the guides say roll quality improves. The exact effect worth keeping still depends on the particular genus and your build.
How to build a board
Progression has two practical inputs: developing pets and spending resources on Genus Analysis. The guides describe obtaining pets, reaching Pet Insight thresholds, and running analysis as sources of board experience. An individual pet at the reported global cap can still be relevant: excess Souls may be converted into Soul Crystals associated with its genus.

- Choose the board that fits your needs. Each genus advances separately, so focus effort on the family whose effects best support your character rather than spreading analysis across all five without a goal.

There are two reasonable collection priorities, and they solve different problems. Collecting new pets broadens your collection and can supply the experience tied to obtaining a pet. Leveling a pet you already own uses additional Souls to reach its reported Pet Insight thresholds and can contribute more board experience. If your collection has many gaps, new unlocks are a natural early objective. If you already have the pets you want, continuing to develop useful pets can be the more relevant route. Maxbit Games’ 2026 guide gives additional experience figures: 500 Genus Insight experience for obtaining a pet and 250 for each of the next two Pet Insight thresholds. Treat these as figures from that secondary guide, not official values or guaranteed values across regions. The NCSOFT announcement cited below confirms server-wide sharing, but does not document the detailed experience amounts. The figures can help explain why both new unlocks and pet development matter, but they do not provide a complete board-leveling schedule or substitute for checking your progress display.
Analysis can serve two purposes at once: it rerolls the unlocked lines and contributes board experience. That makes it useful during the leveling phase even when you are not yet trying to perfect every stat. However, each analysis still consumes crystals and Kina. If you are short on either, prioritize the board you intend to develop and avoid treating every available reroll as necessary.
Analysis costs and the cost of locking lines
Analysis uses both Soul Crystals and Kina. The figures below are reported by AION Strategies’ 2026 guide and corroborated by Corpus’s guide; the first-lock price is the reported total after retaining one line. The guides do not establish every later price increase here, so use the price shown in your client before committing resources.

Locking is a trade-off: you preserve a result you want, but pay more to reroll the remaining lines. At low board levels, where stronger roll grades are not yet available according to the guides, repeated paid locks can spend resources protecting effects you may later replace. A low-cost leveling phase followed by selective refinement is therefore the more economical order for most players.

A useful decision is to compare the value of the line against the added cost of preserving it. A roll that is merely acceptable may not justify a higher cost every time you reroll other lines, especially while you are still raising the board. A line that strongly supports your build and that you expect to keep may be worth locking later. This is not a guarantee that the same line will remain optimal after a build change; it is a way to avoid paying extra for effects you do not actually need.
Choosing crystals: genus-specific or universal
Genus-specific Soul Crystals are intended for their matching family board. Universal Soul Crystals can be used flexibly. The cited AION Strategies guide recommends preserving flexible crystals for the Special board, which does not have the same ordinary pet-leveling route described for the first four families.
That is a resource-management recommendation, not a rule that every player should follow. Before spending, consider which board you are actively developing, whether you have matching crystals for it, and whether you want to keep universal crystals available for Special. If a crystal’s behavior or compatibility differs in your regional client, rely on the in-game description.
The comparison is straightforward: a genus-specific crystal is less flexible but has a clear matching destination, while a universal crystal gives you more choice about where to spend it. If you are progressing one of the first four boards and have enough matching crystals, using those can leave universal crystals in reserve. If Special is your priority, retaining flexible crystals may help you avoid a shortage on that board. Check the item descriptions and the selected board before confirming an analysis rather than assuming a crystal can be used anywhere.
When to lock a line—and what to optimize
There is no single best final set of lines established for every character. The useful effects depend on the board, the available rolls, and your character build. The 2026 guides describe higher board levels as improving possible roll grades and advise delaying locks until after leveling. AION Strategies highlights Line 4 for a potentially important offensive effect, but that does not make it the right first lock for every genus or build.
- While leveling: Favor affordable analysis over preserving ordinary rolls. Each lock increases the price, and the board has not yet reached its reported best roll-quality stage.
- When a line strongly supports your build: Consider locking it if the value of retaining that effect outweighs the added cost of future analysis.
- When unsure: Leave the line unlocked, compare the options available in your own board, and avoid spending extra crystals simply to keep a roll you may not use.
Do not read the Line 4 suggestion as a fixed build guide. It is a current guide’s recommendation based on the possibility of a major offensive effect appearing there. If your character does not benefit from the relevant effect, or if a different line matters more to your build, the advice may not fit. The sound decision is to evaluate the effect shown on your board and the cost of retaining it, not to lock a numbered line automatically.
