For a Minecraft Java server using the 1.7-and-newer layout, the live server log is logs/latest.log inside the server’s root folder. Older sessions are stored as compressed .log.gz files in the same directory, while crash diagnostics are placed in crash-reports/ after a crash. Download the complete relevant file, remove IP addresses and tokens, then upload it to a log-paste service such as mclo.gs and send the resulting link.

Which Minecraft log file do you need?
Choose the file based on when the problem occurred. The names below refer to the Java server directory layout covered by the 1.7-and-newer guidance.

The server root is the folder that contains the server’s files and the logs directory. A hosting panel may present that directory through a file manager rather than showing its operating-system path. On a self-hosted installation, it is the folder on the machine where you launch the server.
Find the current log in a hosting control panel
Hosting companies use different panel designs, but the relevant controls are usually called Files, File Manager, or something similar.

- Open the server’s management panel. Select the Minecraft server instance that produced the error. If your account contains several servers, verify the instance name before downloading anything.
- Open Files or File Manager. Start at the server root, not at a general account-home directory. You should see a directory named
logsalongside the rest of the server files. - Open
logs. The live file is namedlatest.log. It is not normally stored directly in the root folder for the 1.7-and-newer layout. - Reproduce the issue if necessary. Because the server keeps writing to
latest.logwhile it runs, perform the action that causes the error first. Then refresh the file listing or download the file again so the copy includes the relevant event. - Download the complete file. Use the panel’s download control. Some panels also expose a download button on the console view; that button may provide the same log without requiring a separate file-manager page.
- Keep the original filename. Renaming a copy for your own organization is fine, but retain the
.logextension and make clear which server and session it came from when you share it.
A live log can change between the moment you open it and the moment you download it. That is expected. If support asks for the output around a particular event, reproduce the event, wait until the error has been printed, and then obtain a fresh copy rather than relying on an older download.
Find a log over FTP or SFTP
FTP and SFTP expose the same server directories through a desktop client or another file-transfer tool. You need the connection details and account permissions supplied by your host or administrator.
- Connect to the correct server. Confirm the host, account, and destination before browsing. A shared account can contain more than one Minecraft instance.
- Open the server root. Navigate until you see the
logsdirectory. Do not assume that the client’s initial directory is the Minecraft server root. - Download
logs/latest.log. Save it locally without changing its contents. If the issue belongs to a previous run, also download the matching dated.log.gzarchive. - Check for
crash-reports. If the server crashed, download the report generated for that event in addition to the log. The folder may not exist on a server that has never produced a crash report. - Disconnect when finished. Close the transfer session, particularly if you used a shared or public computer.
If a transfer client reports that a file is still changing, let the operation finish or repeat it after the error occurs. Avoid editing the server copy in place; work on a downloaded duplicate so the original remains available for later diagnosis.
Find the log on a local server
For a server you run yourself, use the file manager on the machine that actually runs the server process. The desktop computer you use to play may not be the machine hosting the server.

- Locate the server installation folder. Open the directory used to start the server. This is the server root for the purposes of the log layout.
- Open
logs. Selectlatest.logfor the active or most recent session. - Look for dated archives. Files following
YYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gzrepresent earlier sessions. Match the date and sequence to the run in which the problem occurred. - Open
crash-reportswhen a crash occurred. Download the report whose timestamp corresponds to the failure. - Copy files before inspecting them. Keep an untouched copy, then open or extract a second copy for reading. This prevents accidental edits to the evidence you may need to resend.
The folder can be on a rented virtual machine, a home server, or another computer on your network. What matters is the machine and directory used by the server process, not the location of the game client.
Older installations: the server.log exception
Guidance for Minecraft 1.6.4 and earlier places logging in a single server.log file in the server root instead of the logs/ directory. This version-specific distinction comes from excerpt-based documentation, so treat it as a compatibility check rather than a guarantee for every customized distribution.

For any version where the panel’s layout does not match these names, confirm the path with the host or administrator before deleting, moving, or renaming files.
Extract an archived .log.gz file
Previous sessions are compressed to save space. A browser, text editor, or paste service may not read the compressed container directly, so extract it first.

- Download the archive. Select the dated file that matches the session in question, such as
logs/2026-10-14-1.log.gz. The exact date and sequence will differ on your server. - Make a working copy. Preserve the original
.gzfile and perform extraction on the copy. - Extract with 7-Zip or WinRAR. Use the program’s extract command and choose a local folder you can find easily. The result should be an uncompressed
.logfile. - Open the extracted log as plain text. Do not save it through a word processor that changes line endings or inserts formatting.
- Share the extracted log and retain the archive. Keep the original compressed file in case a helper needs to verify the exact session or requests the archive itself.
If extraction produces no readable file, verify that you downloaded the complete archive rather than a partial transfer, and repeat the download before drawing conclusions from an empty or truncated result.
Which files should you send for each problem?

Send the file that contains the beginning of the failure, not just the final message. Earlier lines often identify the first configuration, loading, or connection error that caused later messages. A short tail can therefore hide the useful diagnosis.

Share the complete log with a paste link
- Make a copy for sharing. Never redact the only copy. Keep an untouched original in a private location.
- Review for private values. Scan the text for server IP addresses, authentication tokens, access keys, webhook URLs, passwords, or other values that would let someone connect to a service or identify a private network.
- Remove sensitive values without deleting context. Replace a private value with a clear marker such as
[redacted IP]or[redacted token]. Leave timestamps, logger names, exception text, and surrounding lines intact so the sequence of events remains understandable. - Upload the whole sanitized file. mclo.gs is commonly used for Minecraft logs and creates a shareable page. Upload the complete current log or the extracted previous-session log rather than pasting only a few lines into chat.
- Include the related crash report. If the server crashed, upload or attach the report as well as the log. The two files answer different diagnostic questions.
- Send the resulting link and brief context. State which file you uploaded, when the problem occurred, what action triggered it, and whether the server was running, restarting, or crashing. Do not post credentials or private connection details alongside the link.
If a support channel imposes a message-size limit, use the paste link instead of splitting the log into many chat messages. Splitting can separate the first error from the later symptoms and makes it harder to preserve the original order.

- Network identifiers: remove public or private server IP addresses when revealing them would expose your infrastructure or players.
- Authentication material: remove access tokens, API keys, session secrets, webhook URLs, and passwords. If a token has already been exposed, revoke or rotate it rather than relying only on redaction.
- File paths and account names: decide whether local usernames or directory paths identify a person or organization. Replace them when necessary while retaining enough structure to understand the error.
- Player and moderation data: remove personal information that is unrelated to diagnosing the technical issue.
- Formatting: preserve timestamps and line order. Do not replace an entire block with “removed”; mark only the sensitive value so the surrounding event remains readable.
After redacting, read the copy once from top to bottom and search for repeated versions of the same secret. A value can appear in startup lines, exception details, and connection messages.
Troubleshoot a missing log
The logs folder is not visible
Confirm that you opened the Minecraft server root rather than a general account directory or a different server instance. With the 1.7-and-newer layout, the expected current path is logs/latest.log. On an older 1.6.4-or-earlier installation, check the root for server.log instead.

latest.log is present but lacks the error
Make sure you reproduced the problem after opening the correct server instance, then refresh or download the file again. The current log is written while the server runs, so an earlier copy may predate the event. If the failure occurred during a prior run, use the dated archive for that session.
There is no crash-reports folder
That folder is created only after a crash report exists. An ordinary shutdown, a failed startup that never generated a report, or a problem that merely disconnects a player may leave no crash-report file. In those cases, send the relevant server log instead.
The archive will not open
Confirm that the filename ends in .log.gz and that the download completed. Extract a fresh copy with 7-Zip or WinRAR. If the extracted file is still incomplete, download the archive again through the panel or FTP/SFTP client.
The recipient says the link is not enough
Provide the complete file rather than a screenshot or the last several lines. Add the matching crash report and explain which session produced each attachment. The first error can appear well before the final shutdown message, so context and chronology matter.

- Identify whether the issue belongs to the current run or an earlier run.
- For the current run, obtain
logs/latest.logafter reproducing the problem. - For an earlier run, obtain and, if needed, extract the matching
YYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gzarchive. - If the server crashed, include the corresponding file from
crash-reports/. - Keep an untouched private copy of every original file.
- Remove IP addresses, tokens, credentials, and other sensitive values from the sharing copy.
- Upload the complete sanitized log to mclo.gs or another appropriate paste service.
- Send the link with the trigger, approximate time, and whether the server crashed or remained online.
Following this sequence gives a helper the correct session, the events that led to the failure, and enough surrounding context to distinguish the first cause from the later cascade of errors.
