If you forgot the code, WhatsApp’s Unlock and clear locked chats option makes chats visible again—but deletes their locked-chat messages and media. Check your backup before using it.
Find and open your locked chats
WhatsApp may describe a locked chat as restricted in some interface wording. On Android and iPhone, Chat Lock moves selected conversations behind an extra authentication step. Use the method that matches whether the folder is visible or hidden:

- If the folder is visible: Open WhatsApp’s chat list and pull down. Tap Locked chats, then authenticate with your phone’s configured method or enter the secret code.
- If you hid the folder: Tap WhatsApp’s search bar, enter the secret code, and select Locked chats when it appears.
- On WhatsApp Web: Open Locked chats and enter the secret code. WhatsApp says the code must first be created on the primary Android phone or iPhone. Use the phone’s locked-chat settings to hide or unhide chats.
WhatsApp documents these directions on its Turn chat lock on or off help page. The exact interface can vary by platform; the instructions available there do not identify a specific app version.
Choose the right recovery path before changing anything
Finding and opening a locked folder is different from recovering content after clearing it. If you still know the code, reveal the folder and open the chats; do not use the clear option just to make them visible.

| Situation | What to do | Effect on chat contents |
|---|---|---|
| You know the secret code | Reveal the folder, or enter the code in search if it is hidden, then open Locked chats. | Opens access to the chats without clearing their contents. |
| You forgot the code and have not cleared the chats | WhatsApp documents Unlock and clear locked chats in Settings > Privacy > Chat lock. | Returns chats to the list but deletes their locked-chat messages, photos, and videos. |
| You already cleared the chats | Restore only from a backup made before the clearing, if one is available. | Only messages and media included in that backup can be recovered; later content is not included. |
Forgot the secret code? Understand “Unlock and clear” first
WhatsApp’s documented forgotten-code route on Android or iPhone is Settings > Privacy > Chat lock > Unlock and clear locked chats > Unlock and clear. This clears the secret code and returns the chats to the main list, but it also deletes the messages, photos, and videos in those locked chats. It is not a data-preserving way to reset the code.
Before proceeding, decide whether access to the old content matters more than making the chats visible. WhatsApp does not document a way to reset a forgotten code while keeping locked-chat contents. If you have not cleared them and do remember the code, use the hidden-folder search method instead.

What a backup can—and cannot—restore
WhatsApp says cleared chats can be restored only if the most recent backup was made before the chats were cleared. Restoring that backup can recover only messages and media that were present when it was made; anything sent afterward is not in that backup. Check the backup timing before clearing, because a newer backup may no longer contain the earlier chat content you want.

If you moved WhatsApp to a new phone
WhatsApp says locked chats remain locked after you back up and restore to a new phone. Set up device authentication on that phone to access them. A restored backup does not by itself remove the lock.
Clues that a chat may be locked
- Notifications from locked chats hide the contact name and message contents. A notification may show “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message.” This can be a clue, but it does not prove which conversation is locked.
- Calls from contacts in locked chats are not blocked.
WhatsApp also describes Chat Lock as an additional layer behind device authentication or a secret code in its Account security tips.

Bottom line
Use the secret code to reveal and open a hidden folder without sacrificing its contents. If the code is forgotten, WhatsApp’s documented unlock route clears the locked chats’ messages and media; recovery then depends on having a backup made before that clearing.
