The fastest way to reduce mosquitoes around a home is to break their breeding cycle: once a week, inspect indoors and outdoors for anything holding water, empty and scrub portable containers, turn them over or discard them, tightly cover water that must remain, and use a label-approved larvicide only for water that cannot be removed or covered and is not used for drinking.
Why standing water produces mosquitoes
Mosquitoes need water for their immature stages. Larvae and pupae live in standing water before adult mosquitoes emerge. A container does not need to be large, dirty or permanently installed to become a breeding site; any object or feature that retains water can matter. Removing, dumping or properly treating that water interrupts the cycle.

Household source reduction is different from spraying adult mosquitoes. Adulticide sprays target flying adults, while source reduction removes the water in which larvae and pupae develop. Eliminating water-holding sites is therefore the first household control step, not an optional add-on to outdoor spraying.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a weekly routine. Its April 16, 2024 household guidance says: “Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out any items that hold water like tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, or trash containers.”

Use a weekly inspection route
Choose a regular day and walk the entire property rather than checking only the backyard. Include garages, sheds, patios, storage areas, porches and indoor rooms. Water can be hidden under furniture, inside an unused appliance, in a basement utility area or in a container stored for later use.
- Start indoors. Check buckets, vases, plant saucers, pet-related containers, floor drains or trays, stored tools and any item that can collect a small amount of water.
- Move through storage areas. Inspect garages, sheds, patios and covered piles for tires, toys, tarps, bins, cans and equipment with recessed surfaces.
- Walk the yard. Look at planters, flowerpot saucers, children’s toys, trash containers, birdbaths, fountains, pools, pool covers, rain barrels, gutters, downspouts and tree holes.
- Look underneath and inside. Turn objects over where safe, lift covers and inspect shaded areas. A dark or hidden location can stay wet longer than an exposed one.
- Classify every site. Decide whether the water can be emptied, whether the container must remain in use, whether it is a permanent feature that cannot be drained, or whether it is on public or shared property.
- Act during the same visit. Empty and scrub portable items, cover stored water, remove discarded objects and record any persistent location that needs a different response.
The CDC examples are prompts rather than a complete inventory. The practical rule is to examine every object or feature capable of holding water, including items that were not designed to store it.
Common mosquito breeding sites and the correct response
| Location or item | What to check | Preferred action |
|---|---|---|
| Tires | Water pooled in the cavity or around stacked tires | Discard them through the appropriate local channel, store them under cover, or keep them where they cannot collect rain. |
| Buckets, cans and bins | Rain or irrigation water at the bottom | Empty and scrub; store upside down or under cover. |
| Planters and flowerpot saucers | Water below or inside the pot | Empty and scrub saucers weekly; remove unnecessary saucers or keep them sheltered. |
| Toys and outdoor equipment | Hollows, cups or recesses holding water | Empty and scrub, then store indoors, upside down or under cover. |
| Trash containers | Water inside the can, lid or liner | Empty and clean the container; keep the lid closed and ensure the top does not pool water. |
| Birdbaths | Water remaining in the basin | Empty and scrub at least weekly; refill only after cleaning. |
| Fountains | Stagnant areas, blocked circulation or decorative basins | Remove water where possible, clean the feature and correct conditions that allow water to sit. |
| Swimming pools | Neglected water or debris-filled areas | Maintain the pool according to its normal care requirements and remove standing water from adjacent items. |
| Pool covers | Rainwater pooled on top | Drain or remove the pooled water and correct cover support or drainage problems. |
| Rain barrels and storage tanks | Open or poorly sealed openings | Use a tight-fitting cover; where there is no lid, use fine wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. |
| Gutters and downspouts | Leaves or sediment blocking drainage | Clear the blockage so water flows away instead of remaining in the gutter. |
| Tree holes | Rainwater held in a cavity | Follow the tree-hole procedure below; do not fill the hole with gravel, sand or concrete, and do not drill a drain hole. |
| Septic systems | Cracks, gaps or open vent and plumbing pipes | Repair cracks or gaps and cover open pipes with mesh whose holes are smaller than an adult mosquito. |
Empty, scrub and store portable containers
For a removable item, dumping the water is only part of the job. Mosquito eggs can remain attached to the inside wall above the waterline. If the container is simply refilled, those eggs can hatch when water rises again.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Empty the container completely. Pour the water where it will not immediately collect in another object. Do not transfer it into a nearby planter, gutter or uncovered bin.
- Scrub the interior. Use a brush or other suitable tool to loosen material and eggs from the sides and bottom. Rinse away the loosened residue.
- Inspect the outside. Check rims, handles, lids, seams and recessed surfaces that may retain a film of water.
- Prevent a repeat. Store the item upside down, under a roof or indoors. If it must stay outside, position it so rain cannot pool in it.
- Remove unwanted objects. Discarded containers, damaged toys and unused materials should leave the property through the disposal method available in your area.
Repeat this process every week during periods when mosquitoes are active, and after storms or activities that leave new containers outdoors. A clean-looking container can still be a breeding site if a small amount of water remains in it.

Cover water that must remain
Some water is stored intentionally, such as rainwater or water in a utility tank. The goal is to make the surface inaccessible to adult mosquitoes.
Tight-fitting lids
Use a cover that fits the entire opening without gaps. Check the edge, seams and access points during the weekly inspection. A lid that is present but loose, warped or cracked may not block mosquitoes.
Fine mesh for containers without lids
When a container has no suitable lid, CDC recommends wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. Secure the mesh around the whole opening so mosquitoes cannot enter at the sides. Inspect it for tears, sagging sections and gaps where pipes or hoses pass through.

When a larvicide is appropriate
Larvicide is a fallback for suitable standing water that cannot be dumped, covered or removed. CDC’s May 14, 2024 larvicide guidance describes products such as dunks and other formulations for appropriate small bodies of water, but the water-use restriction and product label control the decision.
- Use it only when source removal is not practical. Do not substitute a chemical treatment for emptying a bucket, turning over a toy or repairing a leaking cover.
- Confirm the water is not used for drinking. Do not apply a product unless its label specifically permits the intended water use.
- Read the entire label. Check the permitted site, dosage, application method, waiting period and any restrictions on people, animals, plants or discharge.
- Do not exceed the amount stated. More product does not make the treatment safer or more effective.
- Do not reapply early. Follow the label’s timing rather than treating whenever water looks unchanged.
- Reinspect weekly. A treated container can still overflow, become contaminated, lose its cover or develop a new untreated pocket of water.
“Mosquito dunks” commonly refers to a solid larvicide formulation containing a biological active ingredient, but the name alone does not establish that a particular product is approved for every pond, trough, barrel or decorative feature. Use only a product whose current label covers the exact site and water use.
Handle tree holes without damaging the tree
Tree cavities can hold rainwater even when the rest of the yard is dry. CDC’s April 22, 2024 tree-hole guidance, updated and reviewed April 20, 2024, recommends using expanding foam intended for home insulation projects and following that product’s label.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Inspect the cavity during the weekly route and confirm that it is retaining water.
- Use expanding foam made for home insulation projects, following the label’s preparation, application and safety directions.
- Keep the material out of areas where people or animals could contact it until the label’s instructions allow normal use.
- Recheck the repair after weather and seasonal changes to make sure the opening is no longer holding water.
Do not fill a tree hole with gravel, sand or concrete. Do not drill a drain hole into the tree. Those actions are not the CDC’s recommended treatment and can create additional damage or openings.

Clear gutters, downspouts and pool covers
Gutters and downspouts
Leaves, sediment and roof debris can create shallow pools in a gutter. During the weekly sweep, look along the full run rather than only at the outlet. Remove the blockage safely and verify that water flows through the downspout instead of backing up. If a section stays wet because it sags or is damaged, repair the underlying drainage problem.
Pool covers
A covered pool is not automatically free of breeding water. Rain can collect on top of the cover, creating a separate shallow basin. Remove or drain that water and correct sagging or support problems. Inspect surrounding furniture, toys and equipment as well; water outside the pool is handled as a separate source.
Fountains and decorative features
Decorative basins, spillways and recesses can retain water even when a pump is installed. Clean the feature, remove debris and check for dead zones where water is not moving. If the feature cannot be drained or kept inaccessible, evaluate it under the larvicide rules rather than applying an unapproved treatment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRepair septic openings and other plumbing access points
Septic systems can provide protected water-holding spaces when cracks or gaps develop. CDC household guidance recommends repairing cracks and gaps and covering open vent or plumbing pipes. Mesh used over an opening should have holes smaller than an adult mosquito and should be secured so it cannot be displaced by weather or routine maintenance.

Decide what to do with any persistent site
| Water situation | First choice | If that is not possible |
|---|---|---|
| Portable water in a bucket, toy, saucer or similar item | Empty and scrub it; turn it over, cover it or discard it. | Do not leave it as a recurring outdoor container. |
| Water stored for household or garden use | Install a tight-fitting cover or fine mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. | Consider a label-approved larvicide only if the water is not for drinking and the label permits the use. |
| Permanent feature that cannot be drained or covered | Remove debris and correct drainage or circulation problems. | Use larvicide only under the product label’s site, water-use and timing requirements. |
| Tree cavity | Use labeled expanding foam intended for home insulation projects. | Do not use gravel, sand or concrete; do not drill the tree. |
| Public, extensive or inaccessible water | Document the location and avoid unsafe entry. | Contact the local mosquito-control program or district for site-specific guidance. |
Know when household action is not enough
Contact the local mosquito-control program when water is on public property, extends across a large area, repeatedly returns despite reasonable household measures or cannot be reached safely. CDC describes local agencies and mosquito-control districts as responsible for large-scale control activities. The correct office, reporting method and local rules depend on where you live, so a location is needed to identify the appropriate agency.
When reporting, provide the exact location, the type of water feature, whether it is on public or private land, how long it has remained and whether access is blocked. Do not enter traffic areas, construction sites, deep drainage structures or other hazardous locations to inspect or treat water yourself.
What not to do
- Do not rely on adult mosquito spray to remove a breeding site. Adulticide is a separate control method and does not eliminate larvae or pupae in standing water.
- Do not leave a dumped container nearby. A bucket placed upright again or a tire left outdoors can refill with the next rain.
- Do not assume clear water is safe. Mosquitoes can develop in relatively clean water as well as in water containing leaves or debris.
- Do not pour an unlabeled chemical into a pond, barrel or drain. Use only a product labeled for that site and water use.
- Do not overapply larvicide. Exceeding the dose or shortening the reapplication interval violates label directions.
- Do not fill tree cavities with solid material or drill them. Follow the specific tree-hole recommendation instead.
- Do not remove or seal required plumbing vents without understanding the system. Repair and screen openings in a way that preserves safe operation.
A simple maintenance schedule
Every week
- Walk indoor and outdoor areas, including garages, storage spaces and patios.
- Empty and scrub removable containers.
- Turn items upside down, cover them or move them indoors.
- Check covers, mesh, rain barrels, septic openings, gutters, downspouts, pools and pool covers.
- Inspect tree holes and persistent water features.
After heavy rain or irrigation work
- Repeat the sweep rather than waiting for the next scheduled day.
- Check pool covers, tarps, toys, planters, gutters and low spots that may have filled.
- Look for new containers or equipment left outdoors.
When a site changes
- Reassess any new rain barrel, fountain, pool cover, storage bin or landscaping feature.
- Replace damaged lids and torn mesh promptly.
- Review the larvicide label whenever the product, container or water use changes.
Symptoms that your control plan is failing
If mosquitoes remain numerous, look for a missed category rather than immediately increasing chemical treatment. Check behind sheds, beneath tarps, inside toys, under plant saucers, along gutters and in pool-cover depressions. Examine whether a supposedly covered container has a gap or whether water is being stored in an adjacent object.
Persistent activity can also reflect water beyond your property line. Shared drainage, neglected lots, roadside structures and public features may require local mosquito-control assistance. Household source reduction remains worthwhile, but it cannot remove a breeding site you do not own or cannot safely access.
The practical rule to remember
Every weekly inspection should end with one of four decisions: remove the water, block mosquito access, treat eligible water exactly as the label directs, or report a public or unmanageable site. That decision framework keeps routine containers from being overlooked while reserving larvicide and agency help for situations where emptying and covering are not enough.
